Probing the pathway of XND‐1, a key regulator of X chromosome meiotic recombination in C. elegans
Meiosis is the process by which a germ cell becomes a haploid gamete. During prophase I of meiosis, DNA replication produces homologous chromosome pairs. The formation of double-stranded breaks (DSBs) between chromosome pairs initiates the evolutionarily essential step of meiotic recombination. Surprisingly, the regulation of DSB formation remains largely unknown. The protein High Incidence of Males 5 (HIM-5) and X non-disjunction factor 1 (XND-1) are two germ line proteins found in C. elegans, and the lab of Phil Meneely is utilizing HIM-5 and XND-1 to study DSB formation during meiosis I. In wild-type (WT) C. elegans, male progeny (XO genotype) typically compose 0.2% of the offspring. However, the him-5 and xnd-1 mutant phenotype display a high frequency of male progeny, approximately 40% or 20% of the offspring, respectfully. Both mutant phenotypes can be recovered via X-ray irradiation, which induces DSBs externally. Thus, both HIM-5 and XND-1 appear to be critical for directing DSB formation to the X chromosome. Through a detailed examination of these proteins, I will attempt to elucidate the causes of severe desynapsis of the X during late pachytene, delayed DSB repair, the inability of xnd-1 and him-5 from directing DSBs to the X, and the role of H2AK5ac during meiosis. Additionally, I will discuss the Yeast-Two Hybrid (Y2H) assay, and the result from a year-long Y2H analysis with XND-1
Ella S. Bulkley Memorial Carillon
The Ella S. Bulkley Memorial Carillon is located in the St. James Episcopal Church. It is a traditional instrument with 25 bells. Originally, it was a chime with 15 bells that were cast by the Meneely and Company Bell Foundry (Watervliet, New York, US). The original chime was a memorial to Ella Bulkley. Shortly after the chime was installed, at the suggestion of Andrew Meneely IV, eight new Meneely and Company Bell Foundry bells were added. In 1936, two more bells, also cast by Meneely and Company, were added. In 1987, the bells and tower were refurbished by Olympic Carillon Engineering (Seattle, Washington, US)
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Mapping the urban environment with a handheld mobile LiDAR system - a case study from the UrbanARK project
Accurately predicting local coastal flooding and its flow through the urban environment is highly complex. This is, in part, because of the density of data used to create the base model and how this data was collected. Spaces such as sub-surface car parking, basements, and pedestrian underpasses are not included in current flood models, and information regarding their location and volume is scarce and largely inaccessible. Additionally, underground spaces present a priority risk during flood events with respect to timely evacuation. Inadequate knowledge of these spaces causes significant logistical challenges in generating highly accurate flood maps of these priority risk areas. This case study, which is part of the UrbanARK project (www.urbanark-project.org), will focus on the use of relatively low-cost, handheld mobile laser scanning technology (HMLS) to map the urban environment and increase knowledge of the location and internal geometry of underground spaces. This data will then be used to refine flood prediction models. Our project partners will also use this data to develop immersive Virtual Reality applications as a communication tool to support communities and emergency planners.<br/
