Acoustical Design Guidelines for Living Rooms for Adults with intellectual Disabilities
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the effects of building design tools on acoustical quality parameters in living rooms for adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) and develop acoustical design guidelines for architects. This study is specifically concerned with the validation of auralizations as an assessment tool and establishing the relation between user satisfaction and absorption amount by listening tests prepared from auralizations. This project was motivated because of lack of data available to architects on the need of adults with ID. Poor acoustic conditions were shown to be one of the key barriers during audiological intervention for adults with ID among who prevalence of hearing impairment is 30%. Complaints regarding poor acoustics by staff members in institutions were also recorded. The impact of building design tools (volume, absorption amount, furniture, location of absorption and room shape) on acoustical parameters was investigated. Based on the results of measurements and computer simulations, absorption amount was proposed as the most important quality indicator. For the validation of auralizations, comparisons between binaural in-situ recordings and auralizations were drawn. The results showed that although the auralizations and binaural in-situ recordings evoked different sensations, it was possible to re-create the acoustical environment with a level between rather different and slightly different to the real environment. Auralizations were shown to be a strong assessment tool to investigate the relative differences between different architectural designs. Following the validation of auralizations, subjective assessment of absorption amount, location of absorption, furniture, absorptive ceiling, screens and noise type was investigated by listening tests among both ''normal-hearing people'' and ''hearingimpaired people". Results confirmed that absorption amount is the most important quality indicator. It was shown that the mean absorption coefficient (? mean) of at least 0.28 in mono-noise and 0.40 in two-noise condition is necessary to achieve a user satisfaction above the level of "good" for "normal-hearing people". The results of "hearing-impairedpeople" consistently showed at least one subjective degree decrease compared with "normal-hearing people". Based on the findings of listening tests, a quality rating system as a function of mean absorption coefficient (? mean) is developed. In conclusion, this thesis offers design guidelines for architects and makes contribution to improve acoustical quality in living rooms for adults with ID. These guidelines include the "Room Quality Prediction Spreadsheet" in reference to the developed quality rating system, absorption application categories and suitable generic absorption materials for each category.Architecture Engineering and TechnologyArchitecture and The Built Environmen
Changing portrayal of a woman in Bollywood cinema: special reference of movies of Vidya Balan
Bollywood cinema had a stereotype image of woman in its movies since the beginning. Women were loaded with the patriarchal values. There portrayal matched with the image of woman which the society had in its mind like that of Sita and Radha (Hindu goddesses). Majority of the roles were those of obedient housewives or obedient daughters.
In the last decade i.e. after 2010, in India, there are more women centric films with women in leading and meaningful roles like Highway (2004, Imtiaz Ali), No one killed Jessica (2011, Raj Kumar Gupta), Kahani (2012, Sujoy Ghosh), Mardani (2014, Pradeep Sarkar, Pink (2016, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury), Chhapaak (2020, Meghna Gulzar) Thappad (2020, Anubhav Sinha) etc. These movies also have special messages for the Indian masses, and they are helpful in bringing positive changes in the society.
This change is interactive in nature. The changing scenario has made much more space for and options for women in cinema and at same time such cinema can be a useful tool in bringing positive changes in society and that too at a fast pace. These changes as well as this interactive nature need to be properly assessed. The impact of these movies can be used for gender sensitization. Some important events that took place in India will also be summarized as they are catalyst to production of women-centric movies in India.
We will review the famous women-centric movies from that focused on representing strong women and their specific achievements. Comparative study of these movies, film reviews, interviews of stars and actors/actresses as well as various articles and books are consulted for this study. Ultimately, through my research and readings, I will conclude that Bollywood Industry has been finally successful in giving proper roles to the Indian actresses. Also, actresses like Vidya Balan have done highly commendable work that has brought glory to heroines. I chose to include Vidya Balan in this Capstone Research as she is a trendsetter when it comes to top women- centric movies in India like Kahani (2012, Sujoy Ghosh) and Dirty Picture (2011, Milan Luthria).M.A.Includes bibliographical reference
Effect of room absorption on human vocal output in multitalker situations
People increase their vocal output in noisy environments. This is known as the Lombard effect. The aim of the present study was to measure the effect as a function of the absorption coefficient. The noise source was generated by using other talkers in the room. A-weighted sound levels were measured in a 108?m3 test room. The number of talkers varied from one to four and the absorption coefficients from 0.12 to 0.64. A model was introduced based on the logarithmic sum of the level found in an anechoic room plus the increasing portion of noise levels up to 80?dB. Results show that the model fits the measurements when a maximum slope of 0.5?dB per 1.0?dB increase in background level is used. Hence Lombard slopes vary from 0.2?dB/dB at 50?dB background level to 0.5?dB/dB at 80?dB. In addition, both measurements and the model predict a decrease of 5.5?dB per doubling of absorbing area in a room when the number of talkers is constant. Sound pressure levels increase for a doubling of talkers from 3?dB for low densities to 6?dB for dense crowds. Finally, there was correspondence between the model estimation and previous measurements reported in the literature.Building TechnologyArchitectur
Design, construction and field testing of a manually feeding semiautomatic sugarcane dud chipper
Sugarcane is the main sugar crop, and sugar is an important agricultural product in Egypt. There are many problems with the technology used in the current planting method of sugarcane, which has a great impact on the planting quality of sugarcane, which have a series of problems, such as low cutting efficiency and poor quality. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to design, construct, and field testing of a semiautomatic sugarcane bud chipper assisted with pivot knives for cutting sugarcane buds and germinating them in plastic trays inside a greenhouse until they reached an average length of 35 cm, and then planting them in the field. In the field tests five cutting speeds (35, 40, 45, 50, and 56 rpm. (Revolution Per minute), three cutting knives (1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm) were used for cutting sugarcane stalks with four different diameters (1.32, 1.82, 2.43, and 2.68 cm). The obtained results showed that the values of the damage index and invisible losses were within acceptable limits (ranging between - 1.0 and 0.0) for all the variables under the test. Still, the lowest damage index and invisible losses were recorded with the buds that were cut with a knife of 1.5 mm thickness and cutting speeds less than 50 rpm. The skipping rate increases with the increase in cutting speed and stalk diameter, ranging between 0.0 to 13%. The maximum machine productivity was 110 Buds per minute at a cutting speed of 35 rpm and stalk diameter of 1.32 cm. The paper's findings have important application values for promoting the designing and development of sugarcane bud chipper and sugarcane planting technology in the future
Pathological Mechanism of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial, smoldering, focal (intima of bifurcated blood arteries), chronic, progressive asymptotically, immune-inflammatory, disorder driven by lipid imbalance, in the large to medium sized (upto3mm external diameter) arteries with many cardiovascular clinical manifestations. Atherosclerosis developmentinvolves many cells, organs and even disturbed blood flow. The progression of atherosclerotic disease depends on the presence, degree, and persistence of risk factors like high-fat diet, smoking, hypertension, history of heart diseases, or diabetes. Endothelial dysfunction, ROS, accumulation of LDL, recruitment of Monocytes and T cells, differentiation of monocytes into macrophages and foam cells, formation of plaque and rupturing of plaque are key steps behind the clinical manifestation of atherosclerosis in cardiovascular diseases. This article describes the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, possibility of therapeutically targeting mechanism and interventions which can be helpful to reverse or slower the atherosclerosis.
DÖRDÜNCÜ DUVARI BİLİNÇLİ ESERLERLE YIKMAK: JOHN FOWLES'IN THE FRENCH LİEUTENANT'S WOMAN'INDA, KURT VONNEGUT'UN SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FİVE'INDA VE GRAHAM SWİFT'İN WATERLAND'İNDE ÜSTKURMACA
The difficulty in depicting reality, as well as the deconstruction of centers, the abandonment of traditions, and the weakening of epistemic and absolute rules, predominated in the conception of fiction throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s. The cultural upheavals that have occurred in the Western world, notably after the WW II, have resulted in the development of a collection of ideas, assumptions, experiences, discourses, forms, and suggestions that are referred to as postmodernism. One of the greatest examples of postmodernism is seen in a new genre of literature known as metafiction. As literary genres, realism and modernism required writing to reflect reality, which was dependent on particular meaning-creating centers such as the consciousness of the author or the reader, among other things. However, the self-reflexive deconstruction of logocentric binaries has resulted in multiplicity and plurality as a result of metafictional questioning of the reality. Therefore, this thesis first explores and assesses postmodern literature, metafiction, and metafictional aspects from a theoretical standpoint, and then it explicates metafiction as a piece of work that reveals its own fictionality. Then, the thesis examines and analyzes the novels under scrutiny, namely, The French Lieutenant’s Woman by John Fowles, Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, and Waterland by Graham Swift as examples of the metafictional craft. The purpose of this thesis is to do a comprehensive research on the novels in order to illustrate how metafiction subverts the norms of narrative in traditions that came before it. Tezin ikinci bölümünde roman, John Fowles’ın The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Kurt Vonnegut’un Slaughterhouse-Five ve Graham Swift'in Waterland'ı metaforlaşmaya örnek olarak inceleniyor. Bu tezin amacı, metaforun hikayenin normlarını daha önce gelen geleneklerle nasıl ifade edeceğini göstermek için romanlar hakkında kapsamlı araştırmalar yapmaktır.

ACOUSTIC TRANSFORMATION OF ROCK-CUT CAVES INTO PERFORMANCE SPACES
AMC Mecanocaucho; Bosco Italia Spa; Ecophon Saint-Gobain; et al.; Head Acoustics; Mason Industries, Inc.Cappadocia Region in Turkey is a center of attention as a tourism destination with its rock-cut caves, some of which are being used as performance spaces for concerts, festivals and local entertainment activities. However, these spaces are not fully investigated for their acoustic performance before being transformed into performance venues. This paper reports on the findings of an initial survey which presents a systematic mapping of the rock-cut caves used as performance spaces to locate, explore and document a sample of structures scattered in this historic district. A typological classification based on volume, size, type of tuff rock material and historical original use has been proposed and an acoustic analysis of some selected rock-cut caves has been carried out. The acoustic analysis included reverberation time calculations and simulations based on apparent volume, and tuff stone absorption characteristics, which were studied by other researchers in the area. © 2023 Aslan et al. Assisting gait with free moments or joint moments on the swing leg
Wearable actuators in lower-extremity active orthoses or prostheses have the potential to address a variety of gait disorders. However, whenever conventional joint actuators exert moments on specific limbs, they must simultaneously impose opposing reaction moments on other limbs, which may reduce the desired effects and perturb posture. Momentum exchange actuators exert free moments on individual limbs, potentially overcoming or mitigating these issues. We simulate unperturbed gait to compare conventional joint actuators placed on the knee or hip of the swing leg, and equivalent angular momentum exchange actuators placed on the shank or thigh. Our results indicate that, while conventional joint actuators excel at increasing toe clearance when assisting knee flexion, free moments can yield greater increases in stride length when assisting knee extension or hip flexion.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Biomechatronics & Human-Machine Contro
