    No full text
The thesis "Leadership and political communication: the case of Giorgia Meloni and the analysis of the comparison with Elly Schlein" will focus firstly on the concept of political leadership and will analyze its meaning and theories, explaining Weber’s perspective on the concept of leadership and charismatic leader to the point of female leadership in contemporary history, taking into account various leaders who helped to elevate the role of women in politics. The second chapter of the thesis deals with the affirmation as leader of Fratelli d'Italia by Giorgia Meloni, current Prime Minister. It'll be deepened her way of being a leader, her exponential growth at the level of consensus both in the center right and at the European level, focusing on the communication strategy adopted that Meloni has managed to radically change in the period before and afterelection as Prime Minister. The third and final chapter of the thesis will analyze the comparison between the two most influential leaders in Italy in this historical moment: Giorgia Meloni and Elly Schlein. It will therefore involve a comparative analysis between the two party leaders, through the study of styles of communication and political leadership to highlight any points of contrast or rapprochement

Impressionable Biologies: An interview with Maurizio Meloni

    No full text
Florence Chiew interviews Maurizio Meloni on his new book, Impressionable Biologies: From the Archaeology of Plasticity to the Sociology of Epigenetics. The conversation reflects on a number of key themes and arguments in Meloni’s work, such as the use of the term ‘impressionability’ to explore longstanding ideas of the permeable body in constant flux in response to cosmological changes. This notion of the body-porous is one whose history Meloni traces back to ancient traditions and systems of medicine, such as humoralism. In this important book, Meloni makes a compelling argument for questioning the current emphasis on the novelty of biological plasticity as an exclusively contemporary phenomenon, and urges us to take a longer genealogical perspective to appreciate how histories of corporeal plasticity have always been part of deeply gendered, racialized and classed discourses in which social hierarchies have been made through physiological distinctions

Molecular and solid-state (8-hydroxy-quinoline)aluminum interaction with magnesium: A first-principles study

    No full text
The interaction between Mg and (8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum, Alq(3), is investigated via ab initio molecular dynamics based on density-functional theory. We model the Alq(3) thin film both with a single Alq(3) molecule in vacuo (as is usually done in the literature) and with an Alq(3) crystalline structure. Comparing the results from these two models, we show that bulk calculations provide a better description of the chemical processes involved, allowing the Mg atom to react with two neighboring Alq(3) molecules, as was alluded to in a previous publication [S. Meloni, A. Palma, A. Kahn, J. Schwartz, and R. Car, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 125, 7808 (2003)]. Moreover, core-level shift calculations are in good agreement with experimental measurements only when using the solid phase approach. We also propose a different interpretation of the Al(2p) experimental core level presented in a previous work [C. Shen, A. Kahn, and J. Schwartz, J. Appl. Phys. 89, 449 (2001)]

The psychologists’ functions in the assistive technology assessment

    No full text
As Meloni and colleagues (2011; 2012) claim, the non-coding of personal factors in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health could be considered as one of the most influential causes of the scarcity of scientific literature on the role of the psychologist in the field of rehabilitation in general and in the assistive technology (AT) assignment process in particular. In order to overcome this cultural barrier, the professional functions of the psychologist in a centre for technical aid are described by categorising the necessary skills into two psychological dimensions: expertise on personal factors and ability in the field of human relationships and communication. The psychologist practises these competencies by pursuing three main aims: i) to empower the user/client to achieve a greater awareness of his or her own resources and to reach the optimum level of satisfaction by choosing and adopting the appropriate AT solution; ii) to support family members or caregivers in providing effective support to disabled people; and iii) to help the multidisciplinary team’s centre improve professional relationships and mutual communication and, consequently, the effectiveness and efficiency of the centre itself. The tools which the psychologist uses are not only the administration and interpretation of the main instruments for clinical and behavioural assessment, but also the ability to listen, receive and understand within the professional psychological relationships in which the psychologist himself or herself is involved in a centre for technical aid

Simulation-optimization under uncertainty through metamodeling and bootstrapping

    No full text
Most methods in simulation-optimization assume known environments, whereas this research accounts for uncertain environments combining Taguchi's world view with either regression or Kriging (Gaussian Process) metamodels (response surfaces). These metamodels are combined with Non-Linear Mathematical Programming (NLMP) to find a robust optimal solution. Varying the constraint values in the NLMP model gives an estimated Pareto frontier. To account for the variability of the estimated Pareto frontier, this research uses bootstrapping which gives confidence regions for the robust optimal solution. This methodology is illustrated through the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) inventory-management model, accounting for the uncertainties in the demand rate and the cost coefficients
