Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Precisará a narrativa publicitária
Advertising has accompanied the new lifestyles and habits of the universe of consumption, becoming more
immediate, concise and intuitive. We live in the era of the elevator pitch or elevator speech1; of igniting
talks (presentation events with strict rules regarding duration – 5 minutes / 20 slides); of the easy-friendly
(an expression common to design, architecture and information architecture that aspires to an easy and
intuitive interaction with the product / service), the 24 hour work marathons (labor intensive marathons,
non-stop, where results are obtained in 24 hours); and, why not, in the era of fast food (which we are now
used to calling plastic-food: disposable and fast). We are undoubtedly in the era of “no time” and this new
lifestyle has brought with it a new type of communication, more immediate, provocative and with no room
for extra calories, as in the universe of digital communication. The narrative in advertising has adapted
to these developments; as an attentive observant of market and consumption laws, how can advertising
make its pitch2 effective and tell its “story” in a responsible and empathetic way? Does the advertising
narrative need more time and space for communication? How can digital storytelling conscienciouslly
win over the consumer whose time is so scarce? What future is held in this discursive bottleneck? These
and other questions are the focus of this report, reflecting on case studies and practical pieces of work,
bridging different theoretical perspectives and, if possible, opening new spaces for reflection
International positioning of a portuguese footwear brand: the case "My Maria Guimarães"
qualificar e rejuvenescer, internacionalizar e comunicar, parece relevante estudar
em conta os países estratégicos onde vão tentar comercializar os seus produtos;
Brasil. Assim, com base no caso My Maria Guimarães, trabalhado durante o estágio,
Companies seeking to enter the international market must take into account
the differences between specific countries where they try to market their products.
This means defining marketing strategies for each country and being aware of the
structures and methods of organizing themselves to ensure good levels of sales
and visibility.
Amazing Ideas is an agency that provides services in project management,
marketing, communications, public relations and various promotional events. I
elected to join an internship with Amazing Ideas, part way through my course in
Communications Sciences, as part of my Advertising and Public Relations module.
The particular project I was involved in was helping to define certain
strategies for a Protuguese footware company, “My Maria Guimarães”, in
particular, focusing on international positioning within the following strategic
countries: Ukraine, Russia, Morocco, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, United
States, Australia and Brazil. This included many concepts such as international
marketing, segmentation and positioning, environmental issues and symbiosis,
and notions of innovation, competitiveness, brand equity, advertising and
communication trends analysis.
Footwear is a good example where brands can be globally recognized but
where targeted marketing is required. I was able to gain a great deal of
professional experience in how to qualify and rejuvenate brands and
also internationalise products and see how different countries communicate. I was
also able to study marketing strategies and international positioning and
integrated advertising.
My final report described the projects and activities developed by me
during my time at Amazing ideas, and reflected on the challenges of a typical
Portuguese shoe company in the international market
Strategies for communication and public relationship in the digital environment: the case "Insygnia"
compreender as pessoas.
Over a few decades, the Internet has evolved and has become essential to people's lives.
Throughout the process has grown to be more than a simple mean of mass communication, but
also as an ideal environment for companies to expose their products and services to the
consumer. The Internet is a network made by people, for the people, so they are dictating the
course of this network, and companies seeking to improve its market position, should be part of
this network, and above all, try to understand people. It is in this Cyberspace of information
multilateralism in which people are the center of the communication process that marketing
performs as a great potential tool to help companies communicate with people. The internet is a
democratic and multi-dimensional mean which is constantly changing; these changes are studied
by digital marketing that outlines strategies for companies to understand what people want,
making the process of "sale" of a product or service easier. This work reveals key strategies of
digital marketing and how they help companies deal with the diversity of publics and with the
constant changes that take place in the online communication process
