On the Frontier of Realities. The Case of Yaroslav Melnik
The essay analyzes a specific case of Ukrainian writer Yaroslav Melnik whose literary career is often related to the so called new literary immigration. Melnik has lived for the last twenty five years outside of Ukraine, has published (and sometimes written) his books in different European languages and in different European countries and has yet preserved his mother tongue as the main language of his work. The essay discusses a novel, novellas, short stories, and parables written in Ukrainian with the help of which Melnik has reentered in Ukrainian literary space after a long lapse. These works characterized by existential problems, poetics of myth, parabola, and absurd, akin to European modernism (Kafka, Kamu, Hesse, and Shultz) and 20th Century Ukrainian literary modernism, determine a specific place of the author in modern Ukrainian literature. The essay scrutinizes such seminal themes for Melnik as anti-totalitarian and anti-global thrust, alienated person dispersed in the “multitude” and blindly submissive to external power and such constant metaphorical images-concepts of his fiction as “forest man,” “selfhood,” “other reality,” “close space — distant space.” Rejecting narrow interpretations of national tradition, Melnik insists, not without polemical bias, on the priority of universal human values. As the essay demonstrates, there is no contradiction between the national and the universal in Melnik’s work; instead, he seeks their synthesis. The organic inclusion of universal human values in the national literary element and vice versa the inclusion of national Ukrainian properties in the global, universal, all-human context, are seen as two sides of the same process

Ideas in the history of economic development: the case of peripheral countries
This book examines the relationship between economic ideas, economic policies and development institutions, analysing the cases of 11 peripheral countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It sheds light on the obstacles that have prevented the sustained economic growth of these countries and examines the origins of national and regional approaches to development. The chapters present a fascinating insight into the ideas and visions in the different locations, with the overarching categories of economic nationalism and economic liberalism and how they have influenced development outcomes.Grupo Santander-UCMDepto. de Economía Aplicada, Estructura e HistoriaFac. de Ciencias Económicas y EmpresarialesTRUEpu
Bursts of kinetic Alfvén waves and coronal radio emission at 2-3 solar radii
Solar radio observations at 10-30 MHz have been carried out recently using radio telescopes UTR-2 (world's largest radio telescope at decametric wavelengths near Kharkov, Ukraine) and Uran-2 (Poltava, Ukraine). High sensitivity and time resolution of these observations allowed revealing many new interesting features of the coronal radio emission (V. N. Melnik et al., AIP Conf. Proc., 1206, 2010, pp. 427-432). Results of these observations can be used for studying coronal processes and remote coronal diagnostics. Of our particular interest in the present paper are coronal radio bursts at 23-29 MHz with drift rates implying the emission sources propagating upward with velocities ∼ 108 cm/s. We discuss such radio bursts and propose a feasible generation mechanism for them. © 2015 International Union of Radio Science (URSI)
Lyapunov functions and global stability for SIR and SEIR models with age-dependent susceptibility
We consider global asymptotic properties for the SIR and SEIR age structured models for infectious diseases where the susceptibility depends on the age. Using the direct Lyapunov method with Volterra type Lyapunov functions, we establish conditions for the global stability of a unique endemic steady state and the infection-free steady state. This work is supported by SFI grant 06/MI/005.This work was supported by the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (www.macsi.ul.ie) funded by the Science Foundation Ireland Mathematics Initiative Grant 06/MI/005; by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain via Ramon y Cajal Fellowship RYC-2011-08061 (A. Spatially-localized time dependent solutions including turbulence and their interactions in 2D Kolmogorov flow
In 2D Kolmogorov flow in small aspect ratio domains, spatially-localized solutions such as kink, traveling or time-dependent kink-antikink pars coexist. However, the conservation of the flow rate in the y direction strongly restrict combination of localized solutions and their positioning. We find that by adding a homogeneous flow U y their positioning is controlled and each of localized solutions including a spatially-localized chaos is isolated. Numerical results suggest that these isolated solutions can be elements constructing a whole flow

Characteristics of overlap region in high-Reynolds number turbulent channel flow
Direct numerical simulation of the fully developed turbulent channel flows have been carried out at the Reynolds number based on the friction velocity and the channel half width, 2000, 4000 and 8000. A hybrid 10th order accurate finite difference scheme in the stream and spanwise directions, and a second-order scheme in the wall-normal direction is adapted as the spatial discretization method. We observed the plateau profiles in the indicator function corresponded to the von Karman constant. Furthermore, second peak of streamwise pre-multiplied spectra were appeared in the same wall normal height, 300 < y+ < 600, in case of Re = 4000. Nevertheless, the effects of the lager than the channel half height scale on the streamwise turbulent intensity are fixed contributions without dependence on Reynolds number. These results suggested that the new streamwise vortexes are formed between buffer layer and outer layer with increasing of Reynolds number
La 'circunstancia' de 'Herederos y Pretendientes
In June 2010, the Ortega y Gasset Foundation hosted a Conference about the “Spanish Philosophical Transition” in order to debate the book of Francisco Vázquez, La filosofía española. Herederos y Pretendientes. Una lectura sociológica (1963-1990), recently published. This paper is the author’s response to criticism raised in the Conference and to published reviews received by this book. First, the author summarized the argument of Herederos y pretendientes. Secondly he responds and takes into account the most important objections against the book’s hypothesis and methodology. Finally the author evaluates the favorable judgments received by the book and suggests the limits of the historian’s task.Fundación Ortega y Gasset-Marañó
La réforme militaire en Russie
The Military Reform in Russia, by Andreï Tcherviakov
The huge military build-up of the Soviet regime was hiding a true strategie vacuum. The present Russian defence officiais have to rebuild completely a doctrine and a military System. This review has to involve many fields : the status of the Russian nuclear arsenal, the strategie relations with the West, the present disastrous state of the Russian army, the relationship between conscripts and professionals and more generally the new relationship between the army and the Russian society. The debate is y et to corne — the last military doctrine only being a first step — and it depends mainly on the redefinition of Russian foreign policy. Tcherviakov, Melnik Alexandre.
