Insediamenti e grotte naturali nella preistoria della Sardegna. Indagini nel territorio di Usini (Sassari)
Tue following is the presentation of the early results of a landscape study which integrates the data from
archaeological excavation with those offield-walking and remote sensor surveys, with the aim of analysing and
understanding the use of prehistoric caves in relation to outside spaces and settlements. Tue areas analysed occupy
the territory to the north-west of Usini (north-western Sardinia), with natural borders to the south-west and to
the north formed by the Riu Mannu valley and its aftluent, the Mascari. Tue peculiarity of this area compared to
the surrounding territory is the presence of limestone cave systems and rock sheltersas well as surface settlements;
here there appears to be much less use of rock-cut tombs (domus de janas), which in the area of Sassari and in the
remaining territory of Usini are far more common
L’arcipelago del Sulcis. Un’indagine tra Preistoria e Archeologia tabarchina
The Archipelago of Sulcis. An investigation between prehistory and Tabarkinian archaeology - Facing the South-Western coasts of Sardinia, the archipelago of Sulcis is formed by the major islands of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro and some minor islets.
Both the archipelago and the South-Western coasts of continental Sardinia with their inland territory had been inhabited since the Early Neolithic on throughout all the phases of prehistory and proto-history. This paper presents the preliminary results of a research project - namely “Calasetta. Percorsi culturali tra passato e presente” - started in 2020 as a partnership with the town administration of Calasetta. The project aims at reconstructing the phases of human presence, the paleo-environmental frame, the natural resources exploiting strategies and the inter-island connectivity and with mainland Sardinia. Present-day available data, as derived from archaeological excavations and previous surveys, give evidence of the same cultural phenomena as recorded in Sardinia, with some peculiarities mainly inhering the exploitation and circulation of raw materials.
Following a triennial ministerial concession, in 2021 an area was excavated at
Campu Scià Maìn - Tupei, countryside of Calasetta, where fields survey had already revealed Neolithic and Eneolithic findings spreading on ground surface. The excavation area is characterized by sandy alluvial sediments, traditionally dedicated to vineyards cultivations by Tabarkinians settlers since 1770, when the village of Calasetta was founded. Whereas diagnostic pottery is almost absent, an amount of lithic artefacts provide the evidence of human presence in the area starting from Early Neolithic on. A peculiarly interesting aspect concerns the exploitation of lithic raw materials, among which obsidian plays the major role, followed by jasper from the island of San Pietro and other rocks whose outcrops were identified in the island of Sant’Antioco. A complex framework seems to emerge, intermingling
the exploitation of local, medium-far and far acquirable raw materials, thus contributing to the shaping of intra-inland and continental Sardinia mobility system

When looking at the earliest metallurgy in Italy, data from Sardinia indicates a beginning during the first half of the 4th millennium cal. BC, which was followed by very gradual development that intensified during the 3rd millennium. ARCHAEOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF WALL COATINGS FROM THE CHALCOLITHIC SITE OF SU CODDU (SARDINIA, ITALY)
This paper addresses the archaeometric analysis of several wall coatings applied to diverse architectural structures (wells, silos and domestic spaces) from the Chalcolithic site of Su Coddu/Canelles (Sardinia, Italy; c. 3400-2850 BC). The study of the samples was carried out by means of optical microscopy by thin-section analysis, micro X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy combined with Energy Dispersive XRay Spectroscopy. The study showed the application of successive layers of different thickness and granulometry to isolate the architectural structures. On the one hand, up to two layers made with a Tertiary fossiliferous marly clay as plaster are documented. On the other hand, the application of a very thin final layer very rich in calcite is observed in the majority of the samples studied. The analyses conducted evidence certain variability in the technological choices made by the craftpeople. However, it is also observed a clear adaptation of the properties of the studied materials to the insulating and waterproofing function that they played in such architectural structures
Au-delà du village. La fabrication de la poterie et la transmission des connaissances à la fin du Néolithique : les données de la Sardaigne
In this paper we will analyse the shaping techniques used on material documented in Early Eneolithic deposits (second half
of the 4th millennium cal. BC) in southern and south-western Sardinia. The choice of sites focuses on three settlements. Two of these,
situated in the Cagliari hinterland (Su Coddu/Cannelles and Terramaini) shared the same pool of local natural resources. The third village,
far from the first two, may nonetheless have had contact with the others regarding the supply of ochre, deposits of which can be
found on the nearby island of San Pietro.
The methodological approach adopted is based on the identification of macro-traces and superficial microstructures in transversal fractures.
The results obtained demonstrate a high degree of standardisation in relation to the methods used and tools that were employed
in manufacture. The existence of a high level of homogeneity in the structural processes of manufacture, which coexist with low variability
of auxiliary techniques, is also discussed.
Together with this savoir-faire, shared by all members of the community, a variability of an individual nature is also noticeable, which
could be connected to minor technical factors that don’t require substantial modifications to the chaîne opératoire, such as the size of
tools, types of actions, supports and hand movements.
With regards to this, we propose that a socialisation and standardisation of technical knowledge was made possible by close social
interactions. In the same way, some individual variations with respect to standard models may have been realised with a certain degree
of flexibility. In turn, the dissemination of technical knowledge over vast areas is seen to be extremely homogeneous, without strong
technical variations of a territorial nature
