Subcutaneous canine and feline neoplasm ex vivo characterization using Raman spectroscopy
Vēzis ir viens no galvenajiem cilvēku un mājdzīvnieku nāves cēloņiem. Tādēļ liela nozīme ir ātras, rentablas un neinvazīvas diagnostikas metodes izstrādei. Ramana spektroskopija ir neinvazīva optiskā metode, kas derētu šādam mērķim. Šī pētījuma galvenais uzdevums bija iegūt Raman spektrus no kaķu un suņu audzējiem un ādas paraugiem ex vivo, tos raksturot, un atšķirt audzēja un ādas audu paraugus tuvu infrasarkanās gaismas reģionā (300 līdz 950 cm-1). Pētījumā tika izmantoti 4 tuklo šūnu audzēji, 9 mīksto audu sarkomas un 27 ādas audu paraugi, uzglabāti 10% formalīna šķīdumā. Audu paraugu Ramana spektru raksturojums parādīja būtisku līdzību starp paraugiem, ar holesterīnu saistītās Ramana joslās pie 445, 538, 548, 614 un 702 cm-1. Audzēja audi tika klasificēti ar jutīgumu un specifiskumu attiecīgi 57,1% un 80,7% un ar 72,5% precizitāti. Rezultāti parāda, ka izvēlētais Ramana spektrālais reģions nav piemērots suņu un kaķu audzēju un ādas audu raksturošanai, jo ir parādīts, ka citiem reģioniem ir augstāki klasificēšanas rezultāti.As cancer is one of the leading causes of death in both humans and animal companions a development of a fast, cost-effective and non-invasive detection and diagnostics method is of great importance. Raman spectroscopy is a non-invasive optical technique capable of fulfilling this role. The main goal of this study was to obtain Raman spectra from feline and canine tumour and skin samples ex vivo, to characterize them and to evaluate the ability to differentiate between tumour and skin tissue samples as a possible tool in cancer diagnosis in the near infrared region (300 to 950 cm-1). The study used 4 mast cell tumour, 9 soft tissue sarcomas and 27 skin tissue samples, preserved in 10% formalin solution. Tissue sample Raman spectra characterization showed significant similarities between the samples, with cholesterol-related Raman peaks at 445, 538, 548, 614 and 702 cm-1. The tumour tissues were detected with sensitivity and specificity of 57.1% and 80.7%, respectively, and with 72.5% accuracy. The results show that the selected Raman spectral region is not suitable for the characterization of canine and feline tumour and skin tissues as other regions have been shown to have higher detection results
Characterization and biological activity of novel iron oxide/zinc oxide and iron oxide/titanium dioxide core-shell nanofibers
Šī darba nosaukums ir “Jauno dzelzs oksīda/cinka oksīda un dzelzs oksīda/titāna dioksīda kodola un apvalka nanošķiedru raksturojums un bioloģiskā aktivitāte”. Nanomateriāliem ir daudzveidīgs pielietojums, un, pateicoties to unikālajām īpašībām, tie ātri kļūst neaizstājami dažādās studiju jomās. Koaksiāli elektrovērpti nanopavedieni tiek pētīti pretmikrobu virsmas apstrādei un piesārņojošo vielu noārdīšanai. Šis pētījums ir vērsts uz Fe2O3/ZnO, gan Fe2O3/ TiO2 kodola-čaulas nanopavedienu bioloģisko īpašību izpēti: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida Albicans mikroorgaismos un Daucus carota un Sambucus nigra augu kalusos, papildus nanopavedienu izmēra, morfoloģijas un ķīmiskā satura izpētei. Gan Fe2O3/ZnO, gan Fe2O3/TiO2 kodola-apvalka nanošķiedras uzrādīja statistiski nozīmīgu inhibējošo iedarbību uz vairākiem mikroorganismiem Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa un Candida Albicans (P < 0,05). Turklāt nanošķiedras uzrādīja negatīvu ietekmi uz Daucus carota un Sambucus nigra augu kalusiem.Nanomaterials have diverse applications and thanks to their unique properties are quickly becoming irreplaceable in various fields of study. Coaxially electrospun nanofibers are being studied for antimicrobial surface treatment and pollutant degradation. This study focuses on investigating the biological properties of microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida Albicans and Daucus carota and Sambucus nigra plant calluses in addition to investigating nanofiber size, morphology and chemical content of Fe2O3/ZnO and Fe2O3/TiO2 core-shell nanofibers. Both Fe2O3/ZnO and Fe2O3/ TiO2 core-shell nanofibers showed statistically significant inhibitory effects on several microorganisms Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida Albicans (P < 0,05). Additionally, nanofibers also showed a negative impact on Daucus carota and Sambucus nigra plant calluses
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
