Bistatic TerraSAR-X/F-SAR Spaceborne-Airborne SAR Experiment: Description, Data Processing and Results

    No full text
We report about the first X-band spaceborne-airborne bistatic SAR experiment, using the German satellite TerraSAR-X as transmitter and DLR's new airborne radar system F-SAR as receiver. The data were acquired early November 2007. The importance of the experiment is not only due to its pioneering character, but also due to its potential to serve as a test-bed for the validation of non-stationary bistatic acquisition procedures, novel calibration and synchronisation algorithms, and advanced imaging techniques, as required for future non-synchronised bistatic SAR missions. High-resolution bistatic imaging requires in general a perfect synchronisation of the radar systems, which in the present case is achieved by evaluating the range histories of several reference targets. After synchronisation, non-stationary focussing is performed using a bistatic backprojection approach. Benefiting from the flexibility of both acquisition systems, stand-alone TerraSAR-X monostatic as well as interoperated TerraSAR-X/F-SAR bistatic data sets have been recorded; the simultaneous availability of monostatic and bistatic images will help to understand their similarities and differences. As expected, the bistatic image shows a space-variant behaviour in spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio; both outperform their monostatic counterparts in almost the complete imaged scene. A detailed comparison between the monostatic and bistatic images is given, illustrating the complementarity of both measurements in terms of available backscattered energy and Doppler information

Plants in water-controlled ecosystem: active roles in hydrological processes and response to water stress. I: Scope and general outline

    No full text
This series of four papers studies the complex dynamics of water-controlled ecosystems from the hydro-ecological point of view [e.g., I. Rodriguez-Iturbe, Water Resour. Res. 36 (1) (2000) 3-9]. After this general outline, the role of climate, soil, and vegetation is modeled in Part II [F. Laio, A. Porporato, L. Ridolfi, I. Rodriguez-Iturbe, Adv. Water Res. 24 (7) (2001) 707-723] to investigate the probabilistic structure of soil moisture dynamics and the water balance. Particular attention is given to the impact of timing and amount of rainfall, plant physiology, and soil properties. From the statistical characterization of the crossing properties of arbitrary levels of soil moisture, Part III develops an expression for vegetation water stress [A. Porporato, F. Laio, L. Ridolfi, I. Rodriguez-Iturbe, Adv. Water Res. 24 (7) (2001) 725-744]. This measure of stress is then employed to quantify the response of plants to soil moisture deficit as well as to infer plant suitability to given environmental conditions and understand some of the reasons for possible coexistence of different species. Detailed applications of these concepts are developed in Part IV [F. Laio, A. Porporato, C.P. Fernandez-Illescas, I. Rodriguez-Iturbe, Adv. Water Res. 24 (7) (2001) 745-762], where we investigate the dynamics of three different water-controlled ecosystems

    F-SAR – DLR’s advanced airborne SAR system onboard DO228

The Microwaves and Radar Institute of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is known for its consistent work on the field of airborne synthetic aperture radar and its application. In April 2008 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the maiden flight of the well-known E-SAR system. E-SAR was maintained well over the time. It provided valuable knowledge to the science community, especially in the last 10 years. However, it became more and more obvious that a technological renewal was inevitable. Consequently the development of a new SAR system was put on the line some years ago under the name ‘F-SAR’. F-SAR identifies the successor of the well-known ESAR system. The system is under development at the Microwaves and Radar Institute. The development was triggered by the demand for data being simultaneously acquired at different wavelengths and polarisations as well as by the demand for very high range resolution
