    The Reverend W.B. Clarke remains something of an enigma in the annals of Australian science, despite the publication of numerous books and articles on his life and times. The author argues that this is mainly due to the deficiencies of previous researchers in addressing the full gamut of that Reverend gentleman’s work. Though the basic details of Clarke’s life are clearly known, numerous significant gaps exist in the surviving archive. For example, his personal collection of rocks, fossils, geological maps and library was destroyed in the Garden Palace fire of 1882; his large corpus of work which appeared in Australian newspapers between 1839-78 has only recently been identified; and a collection of personal correspondence awaits ‘translation’ and publication. Until these omissions are addressed, the jury must remain out as to whether W.B. Clarke deserves the title ‘Father of Australian Geology’ or any similar accolade

    Room Acoustical Parameter Estimation from Room Impulse Responses Using Deep Neural Networks

    We describe a new method to estimate the geometry of a room and reflection coefficients given room impulse responses. The method utilizes convolutional neural networks to estimate the room geometry and multilayer perceptrons to estimate the reflection coefficients. The mean square error is used as the loss function. In contrast to existing methods, we do not require the knowledge of the relative positions of sources and receivers in the room. The method can be used with only a single RIR between one source and one receiver. For simulated environments, the proposed estimation method can achieve an average of 0.04 m accuracy for each dimension in room geometry estimation and 0.09 accuracy in reflection coefficients. For real-world environments, the room geometry estimation method achieves an accuracy of an average of 0.065 m for each dimension.Accepted author manuscriptSignal Processing System

    The application of Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of the dialogic provides unique insight into the poetry and plays of W.B. Yeats. Though this early twentieth century Irish writer favored poetry over the novel form on which Bakhtin based his studies, his compositions can be better understood and his intentions further elucidated in light of Bakhtin's explanations of dialogic and monologic writing. Yeats often employs the form of dialogue, but the external dialogic form conceals a monologic discourse that states a truth on which the author has already decided. The form nevertheless serves to strengthen the poet and playwright's words by endowing them with the rhetorical strength of a conclusive truth resulting from a true dialogic pursuit

    Derivation and Analysis of the Primal-Dual Method of Multipliers Based on Monotone Operator Theory

    In this paper, we present a novel derivation of an existing algorithm for distributed optimization termed the primal-dual method of multipliers (PDMM). In contrast to its initial derivation, monotone operator theory is used to connect PDMM with other first-order methods such as Douglas-Rachford splitting and the alternating direction method of multipliers, thus, providing insight into its operation. In particular, we show how PDMM combines a lifted dual form in conjunction with Peaceman-Rachford splitting to facilitate distributed optimization in undirected networks. We additionally demonstrate sufficient conditions for primal convergence for strongly convex differentiable functions and strengthen this result for strongly convex functions with Lipschitz continuous gradients by introducing a primal geometric convergence bound.Accepted author manuscriptSignal Processing System

    Using eleven of W.B. Yeats's poems, John Gordon explores ways of thinking about and teaching poetry in secondary schools and at undergraduate level. He draws together commentary, research, and his own professional experience, to enable his readers to develop flexible pedagogical judgement that can respond to the requirements of a range of students and the demands of texts of varied length and complexity. His readers will be able to apply the key principles he identifies to teaching a broad range of poems effectively and memorably.
