Self-organized, generative design solutions for additive manufactured free-form structures based on biomimicry
Design as a multifaceted concept has evolved over time. In structural en-gineering, design is an optimization process that minimizes material us-age. In architecture, design is more of an expressive problem that leads to complex forms. Integration of engineering and architecture domains in the past laid the foundation for holistic approaches in design. Biomim-icry offers a platform to translate such ideas into modern times, taking inspiration from natural shapes to produce innovative solutions. This dissertation bridges the gap between different domains by propos-ing a novel design methodology that integrates diverse tools to create a self-sufficient system for generating complex shapes and structures. The proposed system covers all necessary steps of the design process, start-ing with defining relevant boundary conditions, structural mechanical analysis, design of the structure and building up the G-Code for a fully automated processing. Inspired by the efficiency of natural systems, the proposed approach em-ulates biomimicry principles to develop free-form curves, surface struc-tures and deployable structures. A visual programming environment en-ables seamless information transfer between the design, analysis, and manufacturing phases, whereby the developed user interface reduces the barriers for all kinds of users from different working domains. Case studies in this work demonstrate the effectiveness of the method-ology in generating free-form surface structures, rationalizing their shapes, and creating deployable structures based on curved creases. Moreover, prototypes were fabricated using additive manufacturing and composite molding and subjected to mechanical testing. Results show that the proposed approach yields unique and improved customized so-lutions to complex problems, outperforming traditional design methods. The study also explores the potential for multi-objective design solutions and minimal surface modification through biomimicry. By bridging the gap between design, analysis, and manufacturing, this dissertation enables the creation of innovative and efficient solutions for real-world design projects
A study of contactless localised positioning of carbon fibres using electrical and magnetic fields for reinforced plastics applications
anhand mehrerer Kriterien bewertet.
Fibre reinforced plastics are being generously used in various light-weight applications in last few decades thanks to their stiffness to weight ratio. For conventional
joining, fibres are cut by the drilling process, and hence the primary load transfer paths are discontinued. Because of the discontinuity of load transmission, an
abrupt stress concentration at hole area as well as undesired micro damages e.g.
micro cracks are occurred in the part. These ultimately lead to final fracture of the
structure. A repositioning of the fibres before drilling process can, however, protect the fibres, so that an improved load transfer and a reduced stress concentration
at hole area can be achieved by the specific fibre deflection.
Therefore, the ultimate goal of this thesis is to develop a novel method of fibre
deflection around holes which provides flexibility, contactless handling and low
process-time consumption. For this purpose, the contactless fibre deflection via
electrical current and magnetic field is investigated. The method’s relevant boundary conditions in a fibre roving is also identified.
In order to evaluate advantages of parts with a deflected fibre structure, mechanical properties of FRP under tensile and bearing loading are firstly investigated.
Laminates of deflected fibres are compared with ones with conventional cut fibre.
As a result, tensile and bearing strength, notch ratio and corresponding failure
modes are shown. Subsequently, possible solutions of contactless fibre deflection
are conceived and evaluated. Systematic investigations of individual parameter of
the selected solution regarding conductive behaviours and relevant system boundaries as well as investigation of geometric and part defects are conducted. Finally,
a validation of the proposed method within electric and magnetic fields of a carbon
fibre roving and a 2D non-crimp carbon fibre textile is performed.
As a result, a novel method of a contactless fibre deflection via Lorentz force for
a fibre roving is introduced. Proof of enhanced mechanical properties of structures with deflected fibres, proposed method’s feasibility in magnetic field and its
limitations as well as recommendation for action are shown. Additionally, fundamental understanding of method’s functionality and parameter’s correlations are
also provided
Towards a closed loop recycling of room temperature infusible thermoplastic CFRPs
In this thesis, a recycling and reuse concept for carbon fibre composites is devel-oped for composites processed with the novel, room temperature infusable thermo-plastic matrix - Elium. For this purpose, the first works on a recycling process based on the dissolution of the matrix in acetone at room temperature is presented, which allows the recovery of the polymerised matrix and of the fibres in the un-damaged form of semi-finished products (scrims). The recyclates are extensively analysed and compared with virgin materials. Subsequently, different concepts for the reuse of the recycled matrix (for reduced virgin material usage) and universal applicability of the fibres with other resin systems for the further production of composites have been investigated. On the one hand, the reusability of the scrims and parts of the matrix in the production of elium-based composites is demonstrat-ed wherein the 2nd generation composites showed comparable bulk properties to its virgin/1st generation counterparts. On the other hand, the reuse of recycled scrims with other matrix systems have also been investigated. This enables universal use of the recycled scrims outside the Elium composite value chain and thus signifi-cantly avoids downsizing of the recycled product.
Finally, an economic and ecological analysis of the developed recycling and reuse processes completes the experimental thesis. It can be shown that closing the recy-cling loops can significantly reduce CO2 emissions and costs over the entire product life cycle
The aspiration of this dissertation is to investigate the application potential of 3D-printed polymer tool
inserts for the injection molding of technical plastic components.
Injection molded parts are formed conventionally in a steel tool. This manufacturing process is particularly
lucrative to produce large quantities. Therefore, this process is not worthwhile to produce just prototypes or
small quantities, or only in special applications. The reason for this lies on the one hand in the relatively high
manufacturing costs of the steel tool and on the other hand in the necessary lead time for tool manufacture.
In order to optimize this current situation, this dissertation investigates the extent to which the steel mold
inserts that give the shape can be substituted by 3D-printed plastic mold inserts. The mold insert is the minimum required mold surface, which is required starting from a planar tool surface in order to produce a
three-dimensional molded part. Except for this significant modification, the construction of the examined
injection mold remains purely conventional.
Plastic-based tool inserts (mold inserts or inserts) made of duroplastic photopolymer resins, manufactured
using the multijet process, are industrially established and representative of the current state of the art. These
are mainly used to produce molded parts from standard polymers. Polypropylene, polyethylene or
acrylonitrile butadiene styrene are used as injection materials. The number of pieces produced is limited to
around 50 parts.
In addition, investigations with polymer tool inserts made of polyethylene, polyamide and polycarbonate,
both with and without filler components, which are manufactured using selective laser sintering, are based
on the state of the art. In addition to standard polymers, there is also evidence of technical injection molding
materials such as polyamide. The number of pieces produced is limited to around 5 parts.
The multijet process or selective laser sintering enables particularly high levels of accuracy and a high surface
quality to be achieved, which have been proven to withstand the mechanical loads of the injection molding
process under certain conditions. However, compared to other 3D printing processes, these processes are
comparatively expensive and limited in terms of the variety of materials available.
In order to reduce the cost pressure and expand the production restrictions regarding the printing and
injection molding materials used, the application potential of fused filament fabrication is being further
investigated as part of this doctoral project. For this purpose, the polymer tool inserts 3D printed using this
process are used in the injection molding process, tested by injection molding various semi-crystalline
thermoplastics and evaluated in comparison to conventional steel cavities. This approach is intended to
contribute to the specific application of 3D-printed mold inserts for the injection molding of engineering
plastics
Mechanisms, influencing factors and manufacturing implication of prepreg tack in automated fiber placement
In an effort to tackle the technological and economical challenges linked to costeffective production of composite parts in high-wage countries, automated manufacturing technologies have been established in different industries over the last decades. In the aviation sector, automated fiber placement (AFP) is a driving technique to efficiently manufacture large-scale, high-performance composite parts from carbon fiber/epoxy prepregs. Despite being industry standard since the late 1980s, the process is prone to manufacturing defects which result from insufficient adhesion of prepregs, commonly related to as prepreg tack. In literature, prepreg tack has historically been investigated from segregated perspectives utilizing both diverse materials and measurement techniques eventually resulting in a lack of comparableness and transferability. There is evidence, however, to suggest that tack is a complex phenomenon that demands holistic consideration. This thesis therefore explores the involved mechanisms (surface wetting, contact formation, autohesion), process and environmental influencing factors (compaction pressure, lay-up speed, ageing, temperature), material criteria (resin type, B-staging, toughening), measurement effects (probe, peel testing) and manufacturing implication of prepreg tack in AFP. Prepreg tack was found to be sensitive to all investigated influencing factors which could be ascribed to changes in material properties examined by comprehensive complementary material analysis. The employed measurement techniques were demonstrated to be suitable for prepreg tack measurement in terms of reproducibility and the ability to disclose adhesive mechanisms but were partially limited in terms of AFP process parameter representation. Therefore, the manufacturing implication of prepreg tack in AFP was assessed by utilizing a semiempirical process model which was demonstrated to successfully replicate the characteristic bell-shaped tack curves plotted as a function of prepreg temperature for different lay-up scenarios. Experimentally founded and model-based recommendations are furthermore proposed to tailor formulations of thermoplastic toughened epoxy-based prepreg resins with regard to tackiness. The presented outcomes of this thesis provide an informed basis for process adjustment to meet manufacturing demands in terms of prepreg tackiness and therefore reduce the risk of laminate defects during automated prepreg lay-up
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The present thesis deals with the analysis and assessment of the use of a reject from waste paper recycling as a filler and reinforcement in thermoplastics. Although paper is a good recyclable material a large amount of rejects occur during waste paper recycling witch are thermally recycled now.
To create a resource, one specific reject was compounded with different thermoplastics. The received compounds were analysed regarding their mechanical and thermal properties. Comparisons with industrial used natural fiber reinforced plastics showed that the reject compounds could be used for similar applications and offer a nearly identical cost/performance ratio.
For the optimization of the compound properties different treatments to separate the lignocellulosic fibers from impurities and also the use of coupling agents were tested. The compounds gained from these procedures were characterised as well and examined regarding their economic feasibility
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
