Soft modes of the dielectric response in the twist-bend nematic phase and identification of the transition to a nematic splay bend phase in the CBC7CB dimer
The dielectric spectra of the twist-bend nematic phase (NTB) of (the bent-shaped) achiral liquid-crystal dimer 1′′-,7′′-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl)heptane (CB7CB) are studied for the determination of the different relaxation modes. Two molecular processes and one collective process were observed in the megahertz frequency range. Two molecular processes were assigned: One to the precessional rotation of the longitudinal components of the cyanobiphenyl groups and the second one to the spinning rotation of the transverse component of the CB7CB dimer. The peak, at a frequency of about 1 MHz, shows a peculiar temperature behavior at the NTB to N transition, reminiscent of the soft mode at the transition from the SmA to the SmC phase. This peak can be assigned to a collective fluctuation of the tilt angle of the coarse grained director N with respect to the pseudo-layer normal. This corresponds well with the electro-clinic effect observed as a response to an electric field in electro-optic experiments. The low frequency relaxation process, observed in the frequency range of 1 Hz-102 Hz can be identified as a Goldstone mode, related to long-scale fluctuation of the cone phase. The frequency drop of the mode on increasing the bias field is interpreted as unwinding of a helix and an indication of the formation of a field induced nematic splay bend phase (NSB). This finding is also confirmed by birefringence data in the presence of strong bias fields
Director configuration in the twist-bend nematic phase of CB11CB
The director distribution in the nematic phases exhibited by the 1",11"-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl)undecane (CB11CB) liquid crystal has been studied in the bulk using the EPR spin probe technique. EPR spectra confirmed the presence of a higher temperature uniaxial nematic phase and of a lower temperature nematic phase in which the director distribution is not uniform. Spectra recorded in the lower temperature nematic phase were not fully compatible with theoretical EPR spectra calculated according to the recently proposed model for the twist-bend phase in which the local domain director twists around an axis with a fixed tilt angle, theta_0, but were well described by a ‘‘distributed-tilt’’ model in which the director has a relatively narrow distribution, centred at theta_0
The beauty of twist-bend nematic phase: Fast switching domains, first order fréedericksz transition and a hierarchy of structures
The twist-bend nematic phase (NTB) exhibits a complicated hierarchy of structures responsible for several intriguing properties presented here. These are: the observation of a fast electrooptic response, the exhibition of a large electroclinic effect, and the observation of an unusual pattern of the temperature dependence of birefringence of bent-shaped bimesogens in parallel-rubbed planar-aligned cells. These unusual effects inspired the use of highly sophisticated techniques that led to the discovery of the twist-bend nematic phase. Results of the optical retardation of a parallel-rubbed planar-aligned cell show that the ‘heliconical angle’ (the angle the local director makes with the optical axis) starts increasing in the high temperature N phase, it exhibits a jump at the N–NTB transition temperature and continues to increase in magnitude with a further reduction in temperature. The liquid crystalline parallel-rubbed planar-aligned and twist-aligned cells in this phase exhibit fascinating phenomena such as a demonstration of the beautiful stripes and dependence of their periodicity on temperature. The Fréedericksz transition in the NTB phase is found to be of the first order both in rubbed planar and homeotropic-aligned cells, in contrast to the second order transition exhibited by a conventional nematic phase. This transition shows a significant hysteresis as well as an abrupt change in the orientation of the director as a function of the applied electric field. This Code and Dataset supports the publication "Dynamic phase measurement of fast liquid crystal phase modulators".. The work reports an instrumentation system to measure optical phase using a heterodyne interferometer. A flexoelectro-optic liquid crystal phase modulator is used as the test device. Matlab scripts are provided to demodulate the data to recover the phase modulation. A set of data files are provided,which have been acquired from the measurement system using a Keysight U2331A data acquisition module. These data files relate to the figures and can be demodulated and plotted with the Matlab scripts provided
1H NMR study of molecular order and dynamics in the liquid crystal CB-C9-CB

Molecular order and dynamics of the CB-C9-CB liquid crystalline dimer exhibiting the nematic (N) and the twist bend nematic (Ntb) phases were investigated by proton NMR spectroscopy, using fields of 0.78 T and 7.04 T, and relaxometry. The first relaxometry experiments for a very wide Larmor frequency domain (8 kHz-300 MHz) on this system, using a combination of standard and fast field cycling NMR techniques, were performed. The spectroscopy results in the Ntb phase allowed us to probe the local molecular orientation relative to the Ntb helix axis. The relaxation data were analyzed considering order director fluctuations (ODF), molecular self-diffusion (SD) and local molecular rotations/reorientations (R) relaxation mechanisms. Global fits of theoretical relaxation models, as a function of temperature and Larmor frequency, for the phases under investigation, allowed for the determination of rotational correlation times, diffusion coefficients, viscoelastic parameters, correlation lengths and activation energies (in the case of thermally activated mechanisms). A clear difference between the structures of the N and Ntb phases was detected from the results of proton spin-lattice relaxation through distinct temperature and frequency dependencies' signatures of the collective modes. Significant pre-transitional effects were observed at the N-Ntb phase transition both from relaxometry and spectroscopy data. The experimental results correlate to data and models for comparable liquid crystalline systems
EPR study of the polydomain structure of the twist-bend nematic phase of CB9CB in the bulk
EPR spin probe spectra of the liquid crystal phases exhibited, in the bulk, by the 1″,9″-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4’-yl)nonane (CB9CB) bent-shape dimer showed that, on cooling from the isotropicphase, this material forms a uniaxial nematic phase with a uniform director macroscopicallyaligned along the spectrometer field. Upon further cooling, a transition into the twist-bendnematic phase is observed after a biphasic region of approximately 4 K. In this lower temperaturenematic phase, the director does not appear to be macroscopically aligned. The non-uniformdirector distribution is modelled as a collection of monodomains tilted with respect to themagnetic field and orientationally distributed around the tilt direction
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
