    Assessing the significance of climate and community factors on urban water demand

    AbstractEnsuring adequate water supply to urban areas is a challenging task due to factors such as rapid urban growth, increasing water demand and climate change. In developing a sustainable water supply system, it is important to identify the dominant water demand factors for any given water supply scheme. This paper applies principal components analysis to identify the factors that dominate residential water demand using the Blue Mountains Water Supply System in Australia as a case study. The results show that the influence of community intervention factors (e.g. use of water efficient appliances and rainwater tanks) on water demand are among the most significant. The result also confirmed that the community intervention programmes and water pricing policy together can play a noticeable role in reducing the overall water demand. On the other hand, the influence of rainfall on water demand is found to be very limited, while temperature shows some degree of correlation with water demand. The results of this study would help water authorities to plan for effective water demand management strategies and to develop a water demand forecasting model with appropriate climatic factors to achieve sustainable water resources management. The methodology developed in this paper can be adapted to other water supply systems to identify the influential factors in water demand modelling and to devise an effective demand management strategy

The words in the lexicon will be annotated with a combination of tags addressing Parts-of-speech, syntactic, semantic and other grammatical features. Bangla words have been classified into several different parts – of – speech categories including various major word groups and subgroups. This paper aims to provide an integrated user – friendly software interface to the user to annotate a large existing Bangla word set and proposes a mechanism to collaboratively integrate linguists and other interested people into the lexicon build up process. The effort will be a significant progress towards development of a properly annotated lexicon. The often ruthless and competitive HR practice at Fashionable wigs manufacturing organizations require the Accounts & Finance to be able to understand costing & other organizational issues that are not taught in core financial texts. Hence, the management development programs are often introduced within organizations and trainings are facilitated. The author gained valuable insights on how and why organizations must be price & customer driven and how financial planning can play important role in providing Fashionable wigs manufacturing company to satisfy customers and beat the competition. The report provides recommends for both academia and practitioners. It recommends that management training can also take the time constrains in industry into consideration and train students to conduct academic projects like marketing plan within a specific number of hours and thus introduce performance matrices at the early stage of training. Street vendors in Dhaka city are an integral part of urban economies. Since the COVID-19 pandemic affected all areas, they also suffered from this situation. The study aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the livelihoods of street vendors. To attain the objectives, primary data were collected from 122 respondents using simple random sampling in three areas of Dhaka city with a pre-tested questionnaire in March-April 2022. Descriptive statistics and the livelihood assessment index (LAI) method were used to analyze the data. The results showed that COVID-19 had a negative impact on the livelihoods of street vendors. The pandemic affected different capitals of the sustainable livelihood framework (SLF) in different ways, with social capital extended and financial and human capital compensating, while other capital remained constant. Street vendors' household income decreased during the pandemic, and though many were expected to migrate to the village, only a few did. Street vendors managed to sustain their livelihoods through vending businesses, taking loans from various sources, and spending their previous savings. To protect this vulnerable group from future similar events, they need to be encouraged to save more and strengthen their social capital. This study provides a clear understanding of the adverse effects of COVID-19 on the livelihoods of street vendors in Dhaka city. It highlights the need for effective policy measures to mitigate the impact in the future

    Ethical issues in profit rate charges in Islamic debt financing with special reference to Islamic personal financing product in Malaysia

    In past thirty years, Islamic banking has established itself in the global market as an alternative method of financing to interest-based financing. Most of Islamic financing products are formulated on debt financing contract such as murabaha and tawaruq contracts where elements of interest, ambiguities, gambling and impure commodities are duly avoided. While these contracts have complied with the fundamental principle of the Shariah, less attention is accorded to the pricing aspect of the contract especially in the setting of finance charges, namely profit rates on the facilities. While regulatory murabaha Shariah parameter defined the selling price of murabaha as a sum of the cost of purchase and profit margin, less study is attempted on the latter. Claims of exorbitant profits charged by Islamic banks have been voiced by various parties including consumer associations are not without basis. The first objective of this study is to examine and confirm the claims made by the consumer groups. This study has confirmed that the complaints have been true where Islamic banks were found to use the monthly profit rate compounding system as well as the flat rate method which have contributed to the questionable increase in profits earned by the banks. In the former, the effective profit rates (EPF) are found always higher than the quoted profit rates (QPR) while in the latter the use of flat rate method (FRM) over the reducing balance method (RBM) where both of these practices have increase banking profits at the detriment of customers. This study considers this case as an ethical issue as no clear guideline on this matter is accorded by the regulator in the murabaha Shariah parameter

    Effectiveness of Social Media Marketing in Promoting Sustainable Projects in B2B Businesses

    It is analyzing the rising value of using social media for marketing to support sustainability programs in B2B organizations. The issue is relevant now because it tackles how to communicate environmental and social responsibility in the modern digital world. The study addresses the issue that little is known in academic research about B2B companies using places like LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter to advertise efforts for sustainable development and earn confidence from stakeholders. The study is based on the diffusion of innovation theory, stakeholder theory and resource-based view (RBV). Data for this study was collected from 50 employees in Bangladesh's B2B companies through online survey. Results indicate that a majority of B2B companies build their brand reputation and trust by sharing video and infographic content and LinkedIn emerges as the top platform for this purpose. Even though the way efficiency is viewed is not the same, results show that being steady, open and careful in handling social media boosts trust and fairness. The study wraps up by sharing useful tips for improving content strategies and measuring influence which can make sustainability communication stronger in the B2B sector

    Water demand and supply analysis under changing climatic conditions

    In this thesis, the Blue Mountains region and the Blue Mountains Water Supply System in western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia were selected as the study area and water supply system, respectively. In this research, impact of climate change on future water demand has been investigated by using the climate projections from a GCM and uncertainties in demand projections being estimated by developing a long term probabilistic water demand forecasting model considering stochastic nature of the predictor variables and correlation structures. The probabilistic water demand forecasting model has been developed by adopting a Monte Carlo simulation technique with multivariate normal distribution. Climate change impact on future catchment water yield (i.e. runoff) and their associated uncertainties are estimated by coupling the GCMs’ projections with the rainfall-runoff models. Four different GCMs (MIROC, ECHAM 5, CSIRO Mk. 3 and CCCMA) and two rainfall-runoff models (AWBM and SIMHYD) have been used to estimate future catchment water yield scenarios. This research has also developed an integrated methodology to examine the performance of a water supply system under future climate, water demand and runoff scenarios in the future periods. It has been found that the impacts of potential future climate change on water demand are negligible. On the other hand, it has been found that future catchment runoff/water yield scenarios will be notably affected by the climate change conditions. Moreover, it has been found that consideration of future climate change scenarios on water demand and catchment yield in an integrated modelling framework can provide important insights on the reliability and resilience of a water supply system i.e. when a water supply system may not be able to provide the desired water supply. Furthermore, it has been found that the choice of GCM is the largest source of uncertainty in the forecasted runoff among other possible sources. The uncertainty due to the internal variability of a GCM (i.e. realisation uncertainty) has also been found to be notably high. The ranking of various sources of uncertainties are found to be as: GCM uncertainty > realisation uncertainty > rainfall – runoff model uncertainty > rainfall-runoff model parameter uncertainty. From this study, the main recommendation for water authorities/policy makers is to consider a number of possible estimates of future water demand and water yield scenarios in investigating the performance of a water supply system under changing climate regime. Consequently, a number of potential assessment scenarios, GCMs and rainfall-runoff models and associated uncertainties should be considered in estimating the future water demand and water yield scenarios. The developed methods along with the outcomes of the research would provide vital knowledge about the possible climate change impact on future water demand and runoff, and future performance of a water supply system for better planning and management of a water supply system. This will also help to develop appropriate adaptive strategies to supply adequate water to the communities. The methodologies developed in this thesis can be adopted to other regions and to other water supply systems in Australia and elsewhere in the world

    Impact of climate change on urban water demand in future decades: An Australian case study

    World’s climate is changing and it is predicted, by a significant number of scientific studies that changes in climate conditions will escalate in the later part of the century. As a consequence, urban water demand is likely to be affected. Changes in water demand will exert significant pressure on the water authorities to maintain the balance between water demand and supply. Therefore, assessment of climate change impacts on water demand is crucial to ensure water demand is met under changed climate conditions. This chapter discusses the outcomes of a critical review of literature on climate variables in water demand modelling. It also evaluated the impacts of climate change on future water demand in the Blue Mountains region, New South Wales, Australia, as a case study with the climate projections from a global climate model, CSIRO Mk. 3. It was found that temperature and rainfall are the mostly used climate variables in water demand modelling; however, their form (e.g. maximum temperature, total rainfall and number of rain days) and incorporation of other climate variables in modelling need to be investigated to develop a robust water demand model to identify the climate change impact more efficiently. Results of climate change impact assessment on urban water demand demonstrated that future water demand in the Blue Mountains region in Australia would not be significantly impacted by the changed climate conditions. The results presented in this chapter provide important insights which could be useful in conducting a more rigorous climate change impact analysis on urban water demand in other cities and regions
