Influence of fiber content on the interfacial bond strength of synthetic polypropylene fiber concrete / Soffian Noor Mat Saliah, Noorsuhada Md Nor and Megat Azmi Megat Johari

    No full text
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the interfacial bond strength (IBS) of polypropylene fiber concrete (PEC). The experimental program consisted of testing 24 concrete cylinders (100 mm diameter X 200 mm length) at 7 and 28 days for different inclusion of fiber dosages (4.5, 6.0 and 9.0 kg/mᶾ). The specimens are prepared according to ASTM standards. The test results showed that the IBS of the PEC is inconsistent by increasing the polypropylene fiber dosages compared to plain concrete. At 7 days, the strength efficiency for dosages 4.5, 6.0 and 9.0 kg/mᶾ is 7.3%, -22.8% and - 25.5%, respectively. At 28 days, the strength efficiency for dosages 4.5, 6.0 and 9.0 kg/mᶾ is -2.6%, -0.6% and -3.6%, respectively. Correlation between interfacial bond strength and dosage levels for synthetic polypropylene fiber produce good relationship up to 50% and below 60% at age of 7 and 28 days, respectively. However, concrete containing fibers exhibited no breaking of concrete and no debonding of reinforcement. Overall the effect of fibers on IBS was minimal and at the same time greater than the minimum specified value

Suitability study on chicken dung and fruit waste as Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) diet

Production of chicken increases due to the demand of their eggs and meats [1]. As a result, a massive amount of chicken dung has been generated. Raw chicken dung has adverse effect on plants. Therefore, it should be composted or aged prior to use as raw chicken dung as it contains pathogens as well as urine, feathers, undigested food and coop bedding material that can harm people and animals [2]. If composting is properly done, the process destroys disease-causing organisms, making chicken dung safe to be used around plants, people and pets [2]. Chicken dung is rich in nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and calcium, and also rich in organic matter compared to other manures. The addition of organic matter to soils increases water-holding capacity of soil, improves aeration and drainage, reduces erosion, reduces fertilizer leaching and improves soil structure for plants [2]. Furthermore, organic matter provides food source for soil microbes, which increases soil biological diversity, accelerates the breakdown of organic nutrients for plants to improve plant health.

Pelvic floor disorders are an underdiagnosed source of morbidity and decreased quality of life for women while it is a much less common disorder in men. Almost 24% of women in the United States report at least one pelvic floor disorder, which, unfortunately, increases with age, parity and obesity. The demand or pelvic floor services is expected to grow as the relative proportion of the elderly increases and physicians become more aware of these disorders. Pelvic Floor Disorders incorporate a spectrum of symptoms which include constipation, fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence which involve the central and posterior compartments of the pelvic floor. There are various etiologies involved varying from systemic illnesses to neuromuscular disturbances of the gastrointestinal tract. A careful history and physical examination is key to establishing a provisional diagnosis and directing diagnostic testing. Often, patients present with vague complaints and it is vital that a careful description of the patient’s symptoms in their own words be obtained to better define the clinical scenario. It is increasingly recognized that patients with pelvic floor complaints benefit from a multidisciplinary evaluation focusing on colorectal, gynaecological and urological surgical care. Each pelvic floor complaint has a high propensity to coexist with others, making multispecialty evaluation and care essential. Even for those patients without defined anatomical defects, functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract or pelvic floor unrelated to prior obstetric experience are also common. Numerous advances in radiological and physiological investigatory techniques have become available to clinicians. Comprehensive pelvic floor testing in a stand-alone laboratory facilitates this evaluation, and is very efficient and convenient process for patients. This can enable the underlying pathogenesis of the condition can be determined, which in turn aid diagnosis and guide medical, behavioral and surgical treatment. Tests germane to the posterior pelvis and frequently used by the colorectal surgeons will be the emphasis of this presentation

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of political connections on firms’ performance by controlling the effect of board attributes and firms characteristics. Specifically, it is argued that politically connected firms enjoy a lot of benefit from the government and said to provide greater chances for the firms to increase their wealth. By using 156 public listed firms between the study period of 2012 to 2017, this study maps out political connection based on the 13th Malaysian general election. The results reveal that the appearance of political connections on board give significant and negative effect on Tobin Q, while significant and positive effect on Return on Asset (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE). Board independence is also significant to firms’ performance. This result implies that political connections are favour for a better firm’s performance and not to firm’s value. The findings have an important implication to investors as it suggest that firms with political connection on board perform better
