Awareness of infertility among men and women in Kuantan
Infertility, the incapability to conceive after a year of unprotected intercourse, is a growing concern in Malaysia, where total fertility rates have been declining for decades. This research book provides an exploration of the various factors contributing to infertility and offers potential solutions to tackle this increasing issue. The Determination of Acanthamoeba spp. from Air Ventilation System Samples from Selected Buildings in Kuantan
Objective: The present study is designed to investigate the occurrence of Acanthamoeba in air ventilation and air-conditioning systems in selected buildings in Kuantan. Methods: Acanthamoeba was isolated from dust samples taken from filters of air ventilation systems in selected buildings in Kuantan. The dusts were collected by using sterile cotton swabs, cultured in a xenic culture medium on non-nutrient agar (NNA) plates and incubated at 37º C. The plates were examined daily for any presence of Acanthamoeba cysts up to 7 days of incubation. Results: Based on the results obtained, there were no cysts or trophozoites of Acanthamoeba successfully isolated from all 75 dust samples. After three days of incubation, all culture plates examined show negative findings. Conclusions: The negative findings of this study were probably due to the limitations of the sampling method. It is recommended that future studies use the method proposed by National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for indoor air quality monitoring

and 15,000 Transgender Sex Workers). Despite the reducing number of transgender sex workers in Malaysia (as compared to previous Key Population Estimates in 2010), it is still a concern to Muslims and this trend needs to be relieved promptly
The development of in vitro human fibroblast feeder line
Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) need feeder cells for their maintenance in an undifferentiated state. In conventional culture systems, mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) serve as feeder cells to maintain hESCs. These cells are pluripotent, immortal, and they retain their developmental potential after prolonged culture and maintain normal karyotypes after continuous culture. Given the outstanding potential of human ES cell lines, their availability offers a unique and novel research tool with prospective widespread clinical applications. Human ES cells may be utilized in the future in various research areas, such as human developmental biology, teratology, and cell-based therapies. Contrary to human ES, mouse ES cells can be grown directly on gelatin-coated plates with the addition of leukemia inhibitory factor. Handling the simultaneous growth of both ES cells and MEF requires meticulous care and may prove to be rather expensive. In addition, the dual growth of these cells exposes the human ES cells to mouse retroviruses, which may prevent their future use in cell-based therapy, thus limits the potential of hESCs in cell replacement therapy. Consequently, the use of human feeder cells would be an important step forward in this in vitro technology. Therefore, objectives of this research were to prepare feeder culture by using human fibroblast, to stabilize human fibroblast feeder culture from being contaminated and to observe the changes that occur on human fibroblast feeder culture after undergoing 5-10 passages. The biopsy tissue was obtained from IVF Centre IIUM of normal patient undergo IVF treatment with consent. It was found there was no contamination in term of pathogens after human fibroblast feeder culture is being stabilized. It is also found that there were no significant changes on human fibroblast feeder culture after undergoing 5-10 passages
Health seeking behavior regarding men’s health disorders among government servants in Kuantan: prevalence study towards healthy ummah
As age deteriorates, most of body system will deteriorates as well, same goes to reproductive health. Wide gap between the prevalence of reproductive health disorders and rates of treatment seeking among middle aged and older men are still low compared to other chronic disease. In Islam, seeking medical treatment for the cure of diseases is part of the prophet’s tradition and in a saheeh hadith that the prophet (s.a.w.) said the following:“For every disease there is a
medicine, and if that medicine is applied to the disease, he will recover by Allah’s Leave.” Therefore the aim of this study is to identify health seeking behavior among men regarding men’s health disorders in Kuantan. 157 respondents are involved in this study and the data was collected using self-administered questionnaire modified from a valid and reliable measure. The results showed that 68.2% of the respondents (n=107) have high attitude in seeking for health regarding men’s health while for the rest of the respondents (n=50, 31.8%) have low attitude in seeking for health. Service factor perceived the highest among the other two
factors which are cultural and economic factor. This study showed that men’s health that includes reproductive disorders has always been taken lightly by the community itself. Lack of awareness regarding men’s health issue causes men to ignore the importance of health screening towards men’s health. This phenomenon should be improved in order to produce a healthy community for better ummah
Prevalence, age-related and molecular of cryptosporidium from dairy cattle in five farms in Kuantan
Cryptosporidium spp. are ubiquitous enteric protozoan parasites that cause diarrhoeal disease known as cryptosporidiosis. This research was conducted to find the prevalence of Cryptosporidium from dairy cattle in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia and to identify the genotype of Cryptosporidium by using 18S rRNA gene. Besides, this study aims to investigate the association between Cryptosporidium infection and the age of dairy cattle. 375 stool specimens of dairy cattle were collected and concentrated with formal-ether concentration technique. The Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected with modified Ziehl Neelsen staining. Cryptosporidium species was identified by nested PCR amplification of 18S rRNA gene. Based on microscopic examination, 16.3% (61/375) dairy cattle were positive for Cryptosporidium infection. This research has shown that the highest prevalence of Cryptosporidium was recorded in calves with the percentage of 17.4% (12/69), followed by adult cattle and yearling with the percentage of 16.1% (29/180) and 15.9% (20/126), respectively. The findings demonstrated that there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in Cryptosporidium infection rates by age. Molecular characterization revealed that the species of Cryptosporidium found in dairy cattle was C. ryanae. The present study suggested that proper hygiene practices must be practiced by farmers in order to control the Cryptosporidium infection
In silico sequence analysis, homology modeling and function annotation of putative subtilisin-like serine protease from Cryptosporidium parvum
Purpose: This study predicted three-dimensional (3D) protein structure of Cryptosporidium parvum subtilisin-like serine protease (CpSUB) using homology modelling as the approach
of 3D structure prediction.
Methods: CpSUB is an extracellular protein comprising of 1324 amino acid residues. Its amino acid sequence was computed to determine the physiochemical properties. 3D protein structure was developed by using MODELLER v9.18 software before subjected to model refinement and assessment. The refined model was then computed for functional annotation.
Quality assessment analysis of the protein model for CpSUB through its PROCHECK Ramachandran Plot and other reliable protein structure assessment tools indicated that the selected protein model is a reliable model.
Result: The result from functional annotation revealed that it is sorted to cd07473 superfamily or peptidase S8 family domain in subtilisin-like proteins. To our best knowledge, this protein model of CpSUB was first proposed for the modeling of 3D structure despite not having a crystallized protein structure deposited yet in Protein Data Bank (PDB). Conclusion: Thus, this study may provide understanding to the molecular and structural function of CpSUB. This predicted 3D model may be further studied for wet lab characterization studies and may be used for a prospective therapeutic anti-cryptosporidial agent
Factors affecting treatment seeking patterns among public in three selected areas in Kuantan
Seeking for treatment is a vital step to be done when an individual gets sick. However, due to certain circumstances people do not able to seek for treatment. This study aims to identify the factors affecting treatment seeking patterns among public in three selected areas in Kuantan, to explore factors affecting people not able or avoid to seek for treatment and to determine the relationship between treatment seeking patterns and the influential factors (distance and accessibility and behaviors; attitude to health and health care and self perception). A cross sectional survey was done at Taman Gelora, Teluk Cempedak and Terminal Makmur, Kuantan, Pahang. Convenient sampling method was used in this study. 201 respondents involved in this study and semi-structured questionnaire modified from Adamson et al. (2003). Results showed that data was normally distributed to male (50.2%) and female (49.8%) according to gender. Gen Y (16-26 years old) was the highest proportion of respondents (58.7%) in this study. Majority of the respondents had neutral attitude to health and health care (94.03%) and also to self perception (73.63%). From the results, there were significant association between distance and accessibility and monthly income (p = 0.012) plus between self perception and demographic data (p = 0.026, p = 0.009, p < 0.001). Self perception was statistically the most influencing factor people not able to seek for treatment. As conclusion, the findings identified the most common influencing factors people not able to seek for treatment and could be used to urge the government to ensure equal distribution of healthcare services throughout the country
