Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Rights of suspect and accused under Islamic and Malaysian law

This book analyses the Islamic viewpoint on the rights of a suspect or an accused at all stages of criminal procedures. Al-Qur’an, al-sunnah and other sources of Islamic Law have been the basis of discussion. The opinion of the four established sunni schools have also been referred to. The findings are thereafter compared with Malaysian law. It has been observed that there are more similarities than differences between the two systems of law. In some aspects where there are differences, it is hoped that the implementation of suggestions made throughout this book could harmonise the differences and at the same time refined laws could be introduced in order to maintain justice

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. The tendency in the early stages of the Islamic finance industry was to replicate successful products from the conventional finance industry after adjusting them to conform to Sharīʿah principles. This strategy has been highly effective in placing Islamic finance on the global map. Both Muslims and non- Muslims have been attracted to products such as those structured using debt-based Sharīʿah contracts. Newer generations, from both the conventional and Islamic milieu, have raised their expectations of finance to be more responsive to their desire for social and environmental impact. As a result, bankers and finance practitioners are having to look for innovative and more socially responsible strategies to bring greater added value to the practice. Within the area of Islamic finance, “sustainability” and other themes such as “value-based intermediation” and “Islamic social finance” have thus gained significant attention. They are being promoted to advance the ethical values underlying Islamic finance. The objective is also to encourage the development of an improved suite of products and services that would facilitate community empowerment, sustainable environment and economic growth. The objective is, however, to achieve these socially laudable goals without compromising the elements of profit and shareholder returns. The challenge therefore is about dispelling the “replication” habit and getting into the latest “value-addition” mode to pursue the higher objective of sustainability with/beyond profits. Disruptive tools such as fintech and blockchain technology are accordingly being looked into to advance this latest narrative of Islamic finance

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. The global Islamic finance industry is an active market bustling with new announcements and promising indicators of progress. A handful of moves among industry participants worldwide in the last quarter of 2017 reflect the increased attention the industry is receiving from different stakeholders across sectors and markets. Some of the recent market developments include: Turkey’s sale of gold-backed bonds and lease certificates (sukūk) to attract gold savings held by households into the economy. Unprecedented interest in Sharīʿah-compliant retirement vehicles received by the Turkish pension fund sector with a surge in demand for them as compared to conventional funds. The Federal Government of Nigeria’s debut sukūk worth Nigerian Naira 100bn (about US$277m) issued for the construction and rehabilitation of roads. AAOIFI’s publication of new regulations, notably the Financial Accounting Standard (FAS) 28, “Murabahah and Other Deferred Payment Sales”. The Malawi Government’s approval for the provision of Sharīʿah-compliant banking products on a window basis. The UK Treasury’s promise to return to the sovereign sukūk market in 2019 with a reissuance of its 2014 GBP 200m inaugural issuance to reiterate the UK Government’s commitment to promoting Islamic finance

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. The development of the Islamic finance market over the years has not been without its challenges, whether on the political, legal, Sharīʿah or commercial fronts. Notwithstanding these challenges, the Islamic finance market has continued to push forward, with a step up in activity from different players around the globe. In the process, the industry has become more innovative in its approach and in expanding its coverage to include new types of financing and new markets. One way for the industry to create more social impact and contribute towards sustainable development goals is to associate itself with green and socially responsible initiatives. One of the latest developments in this respect is the issuance of the world’s first sovereign green sukūk by Indonesia in February 2018. This issuance was for an amount of US$1.25bn made under the Republic’s Green Bond and Green Sukuk Framework. While Indonesia has a thriving Islamic banking industry, its sukūk sector has been slower to take off, especially on the corporate side. In a move to spur corporate players and concurrently support environmentally friendly initiatives, the Indonesian Government announced this green issuance. Its proceeds will be used to finance projects such as renewable energy, green tourism and waste managemen

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
