McNulty, James Desmond
No full textJames McNulty was born on September 29, 1890 in Madina, North Dakota to parents Patrick and Maggie McNulty. He had three sisters, Minnie, Annie and Katie. The family lived for a time in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where James was educated at Valley City High School and Thomas’ College. The McNulty family immigrated to Canada and settled in the Edmonton, Alberta area. At time of enlistment, James was employed as a banker at the CIBC.
On December 1, 1916, James McNulty enlisted with the 78th Depot Battery CFA. Gunner McNulty arrived in England on March 15, 1917 and was taken on strength by the reserve brigade of the Canadian Field Artillery. He was stationed at Shorncliffe for two months prior to his death.
On May 25, 1917, while training in England, Gunner McNulty was killed during the first daylight air raid over the Shorncliffe Camp. He was laid to rest at Shorncliffe Military Cemetery. James McNulty was awarded the British War Medal. His mother, Maggie received the Memorial Cross and death plaque in honour of her son
