Dependence of unsaturated chloride diffusion on the pore structure in cementitious materials
Conceptual analysis is performed to examine the effects of pore features on the water continuity in unsaturated porous systems. The roles of pore features in relative chloride diffusion coefficient (Drc) of mortar specimens at various degrees of water saturation (Sw) were studied based on mercury intrusion porosimetry and resistivity tests. It is found that the role of pore structure in the Drc-Sw relationship is a result of its effect on the water continuity. Porosity and tortuosity are not relevant to the Drc-Sw relationship. A finer pore size distribution or lower pore connectivity tends to result in a lower Drc. The pore size effect on the Drc is pronounced primarily at high Sw, while the Drc is dominated by the pore connectivity at low Sw. Cement mortar with a higher water-to-binder ratio shows larger chloride diffusion at high relative humidity levels but smaller chloride diffusion at low relative humidity levels.Accepted Author ManuscriptMaterials and Environmen
Total Cost of Ownership for Application Replatform by Open-source SW
AbstractIn intra-company IT environment, the use of open-source software (OSS) should be expanded to reduce IT costs and to establish SW governance. This requires the migration of systems from the existing commercial SW to open-source SW, but the attempt of application replatform is prevented by the expenses for application reprogramming and data migration. This study proposes a methodology for TCO calculation of application replatform using open-source SW. In practice, a five-year TCO shows a cost reduction effect of 78% - 83%. This TCO could be further reduced if the application size is increased due to data accumulation and the company gets open-source SW capabilities internally. In addition, it is possible to directly apply an application developed from open-source SW to a virtualized infrastructure environment, which enables to operate in a hybrid cloud environment. This enables a scalable, efficient and flexible IT operation and a sustainable TCO reduction in the futur
End of the Kiaman Superchron in the Permian of SW England : magnetostratigraphy of the Aylesbeare Mudstone and Exeter groups
The chronology of Permian strata in SW England is fragmentary and largely based on radiometric dating of associated volcanic units. Magnetostratigraphy from the c. 2 km of sediments in the Exeter and Aylesbeare Mudstone groups was undertaken to define a detailed chronology, using the end of the Kiaman Superchron and the overlying reverse and normal polarity in the Middle and Upper Permian as age constraints. The palaeomagnetic directions are consistent with other European Permian palaeopoles, with data passing fold and reversal tests. The end of the Kiaman Superchron (in the Wordian) occurs in the uppermost part of the Exeter Group. The overlying Aylesbeare Mudstone Group is early Capitanian to latest Wuchiapingian in age. The Changhsingian and most of the Lower Triassic sequence is absent. Magnetostratigraphic comparison with the Southern Permian Basin shows that the Exeter and Aylesbeare Mudstone groups are closely comparable in age with the Havel and Elbe Subgroups of the Rotliegend II succession. The Altmark unconformities in these successions appear similar in age to the sequence boundaries in SW England, indicating that both may be climate controlled. Clasts in the Exeter Group, from unroofing of the Dartmoor Granite, first occurred at a minimum of c. 8 myr after formation of the granite

SCF-a-SW STUDIES ON THE MATRIX ISOLATED SPECIES (WHERE M = Co, Rh, Ni AND Pd)
Author Institution:This work describes the results af SCF--SW molecular orbital calculations on the binary, tetracarbonyl complexes of Co, Rh, Ni and Pd, which have been synthesized via the matrix isolation technique. Comparisons are made between the observed ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of these complexes and the theoretically predicted spectra. In particular, the major ultraviolet bands of closed-shell tetracarbonyl complexes of nickel and palladium and the open-shell tetracarbonyl complexes of cobalt and rhodium are rationalized in terms of a metal to ligand charge transfer type of transition whereas the lower energy band(s) of the cobalt and rhodium complexes are assigned to a ligand to metal charge transfer type of transition in which an electron is promoted from a lower lying level to the incompletely filled, highest occupied molecular orbital. In addition, the fundamental bonding schemes of these complexes, including that of the (``crystal field’’) splitting of the a and levels, will be discussed as will all the energy trends in the observed and predicted absorptions for all four complexes
