Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
The Implicit and Explicit Processing of the Facial Expression of Emotion in the Healthy Aging Adult
Elderly individuals are consistently reported as having difficulty in identifying the facial expression of negative emotions; they pay less attention to negative emotional stimuli, and experience less emotion themselves when compared to younger adults. The ability to process emotion is thought to be critical for communication with others and yet, despite the claims above, healthy-aging older adults do not appear to demonstrate interpersonal problems in their everyday lives. Therefore, although older adults are significantly worse at explicitly labelling emotions compared with younger adults, it may be that they are still able to implicitly identify the emotions and therefore adapt their behaviour accordingly. This study aims to determine the healthy aging adults’ ability to explicitly and implicitly process the facial expression of emotion. Analysis was undertaken to determine which specific emotion the older group had difficulty with when asked to identify the implicitly presented emotion, whether the position of the presentation of the photograph had any influence, the role of social contact on performance, and whether, in-keeping with previous research, the older group had significant difficulty correctly identifying the explicitly presented facial expressions of emotion when compared with the younger group
An Exploration of Motor abilities in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Developing a test of imitation that is not confounded by motor abilities
An investigation of motor abilities using the Movement Assessment Battery (MABC-2) for Children showed that a sample of 10 adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders are more impaired on gross whole-body type movements compared to a control sample of 20 typically developing adults. However, the MABC-2 and the clinical kinematic assessment tool found no reliable difference between the two groups on fine motor dexterity. An imitation task was devised requiring participants to imitate movements from videos shown on screen. Participants were required to imitate shapes (a) drawn by a model and (b) drawn by a moving dot in. A 2 x 2 between subjects MANOVA was employed to determine if the correlation of the path length, time and speed of the shape produced by each participant with those produced by the model differed across group or condition. Another 2 x 2 between subjects MANOVA was used to explore if the constant or variable error of path length, time, or speed of participants differed across condition or group. There were no significant main or interaction effects
Ball Bearings - Investigating the effect of lasting familiar size representations on prehensile movement using tennis balls
This study was designed to examine whether the learned pictorial depth cue of familiar
size is a constantly stored artefact. The attempt was to distinguish whether the familiar
size effect occurs only after recent interaction, or if the representation resides in a longer
term memory base. To do this a commercially made, but largely unknown, oversized
tennis ball (type III) was used as the perturbation stimulus (probe ball), amongst an array
of filler balls. Filler balls were presented at 6 distances, but the probe ball at only 2
familiar-size-specified distances. 26 participants were recruited, 13 tennis ‘experts’ who
played tennis a minimum of once a week, and 13 controls who have never played tennis,
or have not played tennis for a substantial period of time. If the familiar size effect
prevailed, it was hypothesised that the expert group would under-reach to the perturbed
stimulus, under the false impression that it was a ‘standard’ tennis ball. Analysis of
participants’ reaching and grasping movements to filler balls allowed creation of
regression equations used to predict reaching and grasping behaviour to the probe ball.
There were no significant differences from predicted for either group in terms of distance
reached, or maximum grip aperture formed. There was a significant effect of group on the
peak velocity achieved with experts faster than predicted, and controls slower than
predicted, at the near presentation distance, and the opposite pattern at the far
presentation distance. This study did not find evidence that the familiar size effect
prevailed as a lasting representation when no recent interaction is present. Various
