Using FOCUS to solve zeolite structures from three-dimensional electron diffraction data
The program FOCUS [Grosse-Kunstleve, McCusker & Baerlocher (1997). J. Appl. Cryst. 30, 985-995] was originally developed to solve zeolite structures from X-ray powder diffraction data. It uses zeolite-specific chemical information (three-dimensional 4-connected framework structure with known bond distances and angles) to supplement the diffraction data. In this way, it is possible to compensate, at least in part, for the ambiguity of the reflection intensities resulting from reflection overlap, and the program has proven to be quite successful. Recently, advances in electron microscopy have led to the development of automated diffraction tomography (ADT) and rotation electron diffraction (RED) techniques for collecting three-dimensional electron diffraction data on very small crystallites. Reasoning that such data are also less than ideal (dynamical scattering, low completeness, beam damage) and that this can lead to failure of structure solution by conventional direct methods for very complex zeolite frameworks, FOCUS was modified to accommodate electron diffraction data. The modified program was applied successfully to five different data sets (four ADT and one RED) collected on zeolites of different complexities. One of these could not be solved completely by direct methods but emerged easily in the FOCUS trials. © 2013 International Union of Crystallography Printed in Singapore - all rights reserved

Analysis of the internal electric fields of pristine ice crystals and aggregate snowflakes, and their effect on scattering
The discrete dipole approximation is used to explore the internal electric fields of plane-wave-illuminated ice particles, and analyse their differential scattering cross sections. The results are displayed for monocrystals and aggregates of size parameters x=2 and x=10. We show that the field is relatively uniform for x=2, but for monocrystals of x=10 there is a complex internal structure. For a hexagonal plate, this structure is a combination of two components: a "distorted" plane wave, with wavefronts aligned perpendicular to the incident wave close to the centre of the plate, and curved forward near the particle boundary; and a standing wave, internally reflected around the perimeter. The former is due to the transverse component of the field i.e., the component perpendicular to the incident wave, and the latter is due to the component parallel to the incident direction. Focussing of the field towards the forward side of the particle is observed. As the particle complexity is increased due to aggregation, the field becomes smoother and less focussing is seen. For complex aggregates, the individual monomers act independently of one another, suggesting simplified methods of calculating scattering from such particles. The influence of the internal fields on far-field scattering is explored. It is demonstrated that scattering in the forward and backward directions is dominated by the transverse component. The parallel component contributes to sidescattering, with its influence on total scattering decreasing with particle complexity. We propose that this is due to the inability of complex particles to maintain a standing wave, diminishing much of the sidescattering observed for monocrystals. Comparisons of the far-field scattering properties of complex aggregates using the discrete dipole and Rayleigh-Gans approximations are also presented for x=2 and x=10, along with results obtained using a soft sphere approximation
Is There a Behavioral Phenotype for Children With Congenital Heart Disease?
Potential pathways to maladjustment in children with congenital heart disease are outlined and discussed. However, the literature has been equivocal here and reasons for this are discussed, together with important considerations for future research. Recently, some consistency and a behavioral phenotype have been emerging. Work is outlined which suggests that the primary difficulties of these children lie within competence domains (pertaining to social, attention, thought, and activity functioning) rather than with mood disturbances per se. Longitudinal research suggests that a multifactorial model is required to understand why some, and not other, children with the same defects encounter such problems. While medical and surgical factors are highlighted as important, a central role for maternal and family influences is evidenced by this research. Implications for intervention are highlighted.</p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Abstract
PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of topical mitomycin C in corneal wound healing (CWH) after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in highly myopic eyes.
DESIGN: Prospective, double-masked, randomized clinical trial.
PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-two eyes of 36 patients affected by high (>7 diopters) myopia.
METHODS: In each patient, one eye was randomly assigned to PRK with intraoperative topical 0.02% mitomycin C application, and the fellow eye was treated with a placebo. Postoperatively, mitomycin C-treated eyes received artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months), whereas the fellow eye was treated with fluorometholone sodium 2% and artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months).
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity, manifest refraction, and biomicroscopy. Contrast sensitivity was determined using the Pelli-Robson chart. Corneal confocal microscopy documented CWH.
RESULTS: Mean follow-up was 18 months (range, 12-36). No side effects or toxic effects were documented. At 12-month follow-up examination, UCVAs (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) were 0.4+/-0.48 and 0.5+/-0.53 (P = .03) in mitomycin C-treated eyes and corticosteroid-treated eyes, respectively. At 1 year, corneal haze developed in 20% of corticosteroid-treated eyes, versus 0% of mitomycin C-treated eyes. At 12, 24, and 36 months, corneal confocal microscopy showed activated keratocytes and extracellular matrix significantly more evident in untreated eyes (Ps = 0.004, 0.024, and 0.046, respectively).
CONCLUSION: Topical intraoperative application of 0.02% mitomycin C can reduce haze formation in highly myopic eyes undergoing PRK.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
