Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Blutungsbedingte Nebenwirkungen der Therapie des Blepharospasmus und Hemispasmus facialis mit Botulinumneurotoxin unter antithrombotischer Medikation
Ziel der Studie war es die Häufigkeit und Tragweite blutungsbedingter Nebenwirkungen der Behandlung des benignen essentiellen Blepharospasmus (BEB) und Hemispasmus facilais (HFS) mit Botulinumneurotoxin A (BoNT/A) unter Einnahme antithrombotischer Medikamente (ATM) zu erfassen. Insgesamt konnten 140 Teilnehmer in die Studie eingeschlossen werden (Frauen: 65%; BEB: 75%, durchschnittliches Alter: 70 ± 12 Jahre). Abhängig der aktuellen antithrombotischen Medikation wurden die Teilnehmer der ATM-Gruppe (41%) oder der Kontrollgruppe (59%) zugeordnet. Die ATM-Gruppe wurde abhängig des Antithrtombotikums nachfolgend in Subgruppen unterteilt: Acetylsalicylsäure, ADP-Rezeptorantagonisten, direkte orale Antikoagulantien, Vitamin-K-Antagonisten oder ATM-Kombination. Die Häufigkeit blutungsbedingter Nebenwirkungen wurde retrospektiv anhand der Anzahl von Hämatomen nach bisherigen Behandlungen in Relation zur Anzahl bisheriger Behandlungen ermittelt (Hämatomfrequenz vergangener Behandlungen, HFretro) sowie prospektiv anhand der Anzahl von Hämatomen nach einer einzelnen Behandlung (Hämatomfrequenz der Studienbehandlungen, HFaktuell). Sowohl für vergangene BoNT/A-Behandlungen (HFretro: ATM: 2%; 44/2554; Kontroll: 4%; 109/2744) als auch für die Studienbehandlung (HFaktuell: ATM: 30%; 16/53; Kontroll: 31%; 22/72) fand sich kein signifikanter Unterschied zwischen der ATM- und Kontrollgruppe. Auch zwischen den Subgruppen der ATM-Gruppe unterschied sich die Hämatomfrequenz nicht signifikant. Insgesamt waren blutungsbedingte Nebenwirkungen der BoNT/A-Behandlung des BEB und HFS mild und wenig beeinträchtigend.Frequency of Hemorrhagic Side Effects of Botulinum Neurotoxin Treatment in Patients with Blepharospasm and Hemifacial Spasm on Antithrombotic Medication
The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and consequence of hemorrhagic side effects of botulinum neurotoxin A injections (BoNT/A) for the treatment of benign essential blepharospasm (BEB) and hemifacial spasm (HFS) in patients taking antithrombotic drugs (ATD). A total of 140 patients were included (female: 65%; BEB: 75%; mean age: 70 ± 12 years). According to their current antithrombotic medication, participants were either assigned to the ATD group (41%), or to the control group (59%). The ATD group was further divided into subgroups depending on the medication administered: acetylsalicylic acid, ADP receptor antagonists, direct oral anticoagulants, vitamin-K antagonists or ATD-combination. The frequency of hemorrhagic side effects was determined retrospectively based on the number of hematomas after previous treatments in relation to the number of previous treatments (hematoma frequency of past treatments, HFretro) as well as by a prospective survey capturing the side effects of one single treatment (hematoma frequency of actual treatment, HFactual). There was no significant difference in hematoma frequency between the ATD group and the control group, neither for past (HFretro: ATD: 2%; 44/2554; control: 4%; 109/2744) nor for the current BoNT/A treatments (HFactual: ATD: 30%; 16/53; control: 31%; 22/72). Even between ATD subgroups, hematoma frequency did not differ significantly. Overall, hemorrhagic side effects of the BoNT/A treatment for BEB and HFS were mild and non-disabling
Impact of Microglial CYFIP1 Deletion on Astrocytes, Oligodendrocytes, and Myelination in a conditional mouse model
CYFIP1 is one of the five subunits of the WAVE regulatory complex, which is involved in controlling actin cytoskeleton remodeling, impacting many cell processes including cell motility (Eden et al., 2002; Rottner et al., 2021). A CYFIP1 dysregulation is associated with multiple neurological and psychiatric disorders. For example, a reduction of CYFIP1 is prevalent in patients with schizophrenia (Sayad et al., 2018; Stefansson et al., 2008).
In this project, I used a conditional mouse model, in which CYFIP1 is deleted in myeloid cells including microglia, to study the effect of microglial CYFIP1 on astrocytes and oligodendrocytes in the murine CNS. I found a significant upregulation of GFAP in astrocytes, using immunofluorescence analysis of cerebral sections from young adult CYFIP1 KO mice, along with a decrease in astrocytic cell number, as quantified by the number of SOX-9-positive cells.
In addition, I examined oligodendrocyte cell number, and myelination by immunofluorescence labeling of MBP, OLIG2, and APC in cerebral sections of the same mouse line. Here, I found a decrease in myelination in the corpus callosum, and a decrease in oligodendrocytes in the somatosensory cortex, as well as the corpus callosum.
To better understand the mechanisms and to test whether soluble factors from CYFIP1 depleted microglia induce the altered astrocytic phenotype, I performed a set of experiments using astrocyte cultures, which were incubated with microglia-conditioned medium from cultured control vs. CYFIP1 KO microglia. To this end, I analyzed astrocytic phagocytosis with a functional assay, and a defined set of genes including synaptogenic genes, phagocytic genes, and interferon-stimulated genes by qPCR. There were no obvious results from these cell culture experiments that would explain the upregulation of GFAP or reduced astrocyte number that I detected in the conditional CYFIP1 mouse model, as I detected no decrease in cell number or proliferation of cultured astrocytes. However, there was a significant decrease of Mtor, the gene encoding mTOR, which has been shown to upregulate cell proliferation, and which may cause a decreased proliferation of astrocytes. Further experiments using astrocyte-microglia co-cultures and additional analyses in conditional CYFIP1 KO mice will be needed to elucidate potential pathways that underlie the changes in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes associated with conditional myeloid cell-specific CYFIP1 deletion
