A new population of very high energy gamma-ray sources in the Milky Way
Very high energy γ-rays probe the long-standing mystery of the origin of cosmic rays. Produced in the interactions of accelerated particles in astrophysical objects, they can be used to image cosmic particle accelerators. A first sensitive survey of the inner part of the Milky Way with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) reveals a population of eight previously unknown firmly detected sources of very high energy γ-rays. At least two have no known radio or x-ray counterpart and may be representative of a new class of “dark” nucleonic cosmic ray sources.F. Aharonian, A. G. Akhperjanian, K. M. Aye, A. R. VHE gamma rays from binary systems
With new generation VHE telescopes, X-ray binary systems become very promising targets for VHE γ-ray observations. In particular, if sources with relativistic jets are thought of as galactic analogues of AGNs, the acceleration mechanisms should be similar. We survey the prospects of studying these objects with HESS, particularly in the context of multiwavelength studies
The politics of fashion: perceptions of power in female clothing and ornamentation as reflected in the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei
This thesis examines issues of female power and influence in sixteenth-century China focusing on how women and their roles were perceived in the changing social environment of the mid-late Ming dynasty. Using aspects of a New Historicist approach, information from contemporary literary and historical sources are analysed alongside each other. With its emphasis on the lives of women and preoccupation with the description of material objects, the late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei forms an important element in the thesis. China in the sixteenth century saw expanding urbanisation, the emergence of a new wealthy merchant class, increasing visibility of women and a questioning of traditional morality. Fashion consciousness, as one of the most conspicuous aspects of the new material culture, is a possible indicator of these trends. Traditional Western theories contend that fashion began in the particular context of Renaissance Europe. However, this study argues that a similar fashion awareness existed in China too, and was manifested in a competitive striving for social status, in this case specifically among women. In contrast to previous studies which downplayed the impact women had on defining traditional Chinese culture, this thesis demonstrates how women and their sartorial choices began to redefine the boundaries of material culture, influencing literati discourse which, in turn, re- influenced female behaviour

The H.E.S.S. Survey of the Inner Galaxy in Very High Energy Gamma Rays
© 2006 The American Astronomical SocietyWe report on a survey of the inner part of the Galactic Plane in very high energy gamma-rays, with the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescope system. The Galactic Plane between +-30deg in longitude and +-3deg in latitude relative to the Galactic Centre was observed in 500 pointings for a total of 230 hours, reaching an average flux sensitivity of 2% of the Crab Nebula at energies above 200 GeV. Fourteen previously unknown sources were detected at a significance level greater than 4 sigma after accounting for all trials involved in the search. Initial results on the eight most significant of these sources were already reported elsewhere. Here we present detailed spectral and morphological information for all the new sources, along with a discussion on possible counterparts in other wavelength bands. The distribution in Galactic latitude of the detected sources appears to be consistent with a scale height in the Galactic disk for the parent population smaller than 100 pc, consistent with expectations for supernova remnants and/or pulsar wind nebulae
First ground-based measurement of atmospheric Cherenkov light from cosmic rays
A recently proposed novel technique for the detection of cosmic rays with arrays of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes is applied to data from the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). The method relies on the ground-based detection of Cherenkov light emitted from the primary particle prior to its first interaction in the atmosphere. The charge of the primary particle (Z) can be estimated from the intensity of this light, since it is proportional to Z². Using H.E.S.S. data, an energy spectrum for cosmic-ray iron nuclei in the energy range 13–200 TeV is derived. The reconstructed spectrum is consistent with previous direct measurements and is one of the most precise so far in this energy range.F. Aharonian...G. Rowell...et al
Cataloochee tract 284: Jonah Phillips
This 64-acre tract 284 in the Mount Sterling section of Cataloochee was owned by Jonah Phillips. While, in general, the Great Smoky Mountains region was sparsely populated, the Cataloochee Valley remained an exception. By 1900, the population of Cataloochee had grown to 1,000 residents living in hundreds of log and frame homes. A few historic buildings have been preserved on site, including two churches, a school, several homes, and outbuildings. The North Carolina Park Commission was tasked with purchasing land for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and people living in Cataloochee were among those displaced. Cataloochee families continue to return for annual reunions. In 2001, the National Park Service re-introduced elk into the valley.87
