Aquatic plants as bioindicator for water pollution / Nur Athirah Mazlan
Water is one of the important substance that is needed by living organisms.
Therefore, water pollution should be prevented. Bioindicator is consider as an
animal or plants which accumulate contaminants in their tissue and organs from
their surroundings. The objectives of this study were to determine the quality of
water sample based on pH, DO and BOD, to investigate the potential of aquatic
plants as bioindicator for water pollution and to determine the cytotoxicity effect of
selected plants. The water samples were collected from three different rivers nearby
Jengka's Town. Both aquatic plants were collected from the pond in UiTM. The
DO values were determined first to get the BOD values for water quality
determination. The morphology of plants was measured based on qualitative and
quantitative parameter. For cytology study, histology technique was used to
determine the cytotoxicity effect of selected aquatic plants in polluted water
samples. Limnocahris flava and Ipomea aquatica were aquatic plants used in this
study. The result showed water sample from Jengka's River had higher BOD value
which was 2.156 mg/L. For the pH, Jengka's River also got higher value which
indicate less acidity. The morphology of Limnocharis flava and Ipomea aquatica
does showed some changes in term of stem and root diameter, leaves counting and
colour of leaves and roots, and of. The number of chromosome for Limnocharis
flava for treatment A was 2(n) = 12 and treatment C was 2(n) =20. For Ipomea
aquatica, treatment B and C, the number of chromosome were 2(n) =38 and 2(n)
= 14 respectively. The number of chromosome differ to theory due to the
composition in the water treatment. As conclusion, Limnocharis jlava showed
excellent potential compared to Ipomea aquatica as a bioindicator for water
pollution
A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals
Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
Safety and efficacy of warfarin in treating atrial fibrillation / Muhamad Nazrin Mazlan
Background: Warfarin is an anticoagulant that inhibits the production of Vitamin K. It is used as in prevention of stroke in atrial fibrillation patients. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of warfarin in the second six months of treatment by evaluating Time in Therapeutic Range of patients and evaluating CHADS2 V ASc and HASBLED score and their relationship to stroke and bleeding incidences. Results and Discussions: A total of 167data of patients were collected retrospectively. Out of 139 patients who had TTR outside the intended range (75%, 4 experienced bleeding and none had stroke. Increase HASBLED score showed increase bleeding and increase risk of major bleeding event. The common reason for INR outside range was drug interaction and side effects with 39.5% (n=66) patient. Conclusion: The number of patients with TTR >75% (n=28) was lesser than TTR <75% (n=139). The incidence of bleeding was lower in 26 out of 139 who experienced bleeding with TTR <75%. This shows that warfarin could be safe in prevention of stroke with a management and follow up
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting: exploring patients’ subjective experience

Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using content analysis based on Giorgi’s method.Results: Of 15 patients who participated, 13 were included in the final analysis (median age =46 years, interquartile range [IQR] =6.0; all were Malays). Vomiting was readily expressed as the “act of throwing up”, but nausea was a symptom that was difficult to describe. Further exploration found great individual variation in patterns, intensity, and impact of these chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) symptoms. While not all patients expressed CINV as bothersome, most patients described the symptom as quite distressing. CINV was reported to affect many aspects of patients’ lives particularly eating, physical, emotional, and social functioning, but the degree of impacts was unique to each patient. One of the important themes that emerged was the increase in worship practices and “faith in God” among Malay Muslim patients when dealing with these adverse effects.Conclusion: CINV continues to be a problem that adversely affects the daily lives of patients, hence requiring better understandings from the health care professionals on patients’ needs and concerns when experiencing this symptom.Keywords: antineoplastic agents, breast neoplasms, nausea, vomitin
Steel toe cap boot usage and the prevalence to plantar fasciitis among industrial workers / Nurul Syuhada Mazlan
Introduction: Steel toe cap boot (STCB) is used as a personal protective equipment
in many industries. STCB have an addition of steel plates for the toe and sole
resulting it to be heavier shoes, which may leads to pain and discomfort for the users.
The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and associated factors for plantar
fasciitis (PF) among STCB users.
Methods: A consent letter were sent to the respective company to gain cooperation
before the commencement of this research. This is a cross-sectional study using a selfadministered
questionnaire to assess symptoms of PF and associate factors among
STCB users. Universal sampling were use to choose respondants. The questionnaire
comprises of four parts: worker’s profile, steel toe cap boot usage, foot pain and
symptoms of PF. Hard copies were delivered to four industries. A total of 253
workers from four industries: construction (39.9%), manufacturing (25.3%), oil and
gas (14.6%) and shipbuilding (20.2%) participated in the study. Raw data were
collected and analyzed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel.
Results: The result revealed 49.8% (n=125) of STCB users reported heel pain with
39.4% (n=100) having symptoms suggestive of plantar fasciitis. Manufacturing
workers have the highest prevalence of plantar fasciitis among all four industries
(62.5%, n=40). The factors that were associated with plantar fasciitis after taking age,
gender and body mass index into consideration were walking (Odds Ratio (OR)
2.833; 95% Confidence Interval (95%CI): 1.637 to 4.905), manufacturing workers
(OR=10.579; 95%CI: 4.056 to 27.594), construction workers (OR=4.819; 95%CI:
1.931 to 12.030), change of boots more than once per year (OR=3.462; 95%CI: 1.991
to 6.020) and self-purchased STCB (OR=0.392; 95%CI: 0.200 to 0.770). Conclusion: The prevalence of plantar fasciitis among STCB is high. It is found to be
higher in certain industries and also lower among those who purchased their own
STCB
Dissipative Range Scaling of Higher Order Structure Functions for Velocity and Passive Scalars
Differently to Kolmogorov's second similarity hypothesis, we find that the 2n-th order velocity and scalar structure functions scale with n-th order moment of the energy dissipation and the scalar dissipation, respectively. The origins of this scaling are analyzed by the transport equations of the fourth order velocity and scalar increment moments and by direct numerical simulations
