[Letter] 1912 March 21 [to] Mrs. Royer / Hudson Maxim.
The letter is typed on Hudson Maxim\u27s letterhead with an address in Brooklyn, NY. A handwritten note in pencil at the top of the first recto states that Maxim was a noted inventor of high explosives and an authority on the science of literature.Maxim responds to Royer\u27s letter and request for his biography. With flippant humor, he declares that he is often mistakenly introduced as his brother, Sir Hiram Maxim or his nephew Hiram Percy Maxim, the inventor of the gun silencer; however, he declares, "I am not Sir Hiram Maxim, I never was Sir Hiram Maxim, I never expect to be Sir Hiram Maxim, and I never want to be Sir Hiram Maxim." He further states that he has made ten dollars to every one dollar that Hiram has made from his inventions. Maxim ends by suggesting, "Those who have heard of me will know who I am and those who have not will imagine that I am somebody anyhow, or I would not be there talking to them." An innovator and manufacturer of explosives used extensively in World War I, Maxim invented the first smokeless powder adopted by the U.S. government, a delayed-action detonating fuse, and high explosive bursting powder used in torpedo warfare. He also wrote _Defenseless America_ [c. 1915] and _The Science of Poetry and the Philosophy of Language_

Interview with Maxim Shrayer on I saw it: Ilya Selvinsky and the legacy of bearing witness to the Shoah with translations of major works, by Maxim Shrayer
In this ground-breaking book, based on archival and field research and previously unknown historical evidence, Maxim D. Shrayer introduces the work of Ilya Selvinsky, the first Jewish-Russian poet to depict the Holocaust (Shoah) in the occupied Soviet territories. In January 1942, while serving as a military journalist, Selvinsky witnessed the immediate aftermath of the massacre of thousands of Jews outside the Crimean city of Kerch, and thereafter composed and published poems about it. Shrayer painstakingly reconstructs the details of the Nazi atrocities witnessed by Selvinsky, and shows that in 1943, as Stalin's regime increasingly refused to report the annihilation of Jews in the occupied territories, Selvinsky paid a high price for his writings and actions.Title supplied by cataloger
Maxim Tokens and Maxim Types
In this article, I argue that Kant’s Categorical Imperative applies to maxim tokens rather than to maxim types. The article has three main parts. In the first, I explain my thesis. In the second, I argue for it. In the third, I argue, further, that, if my
thesis is correct, then tokens of different maxim types can have different deontic statuses for different agents

Positive Duties, Maxim Realism, and the Deliberative Field
Author Posting © Philosophical Inquiry, 2017. This article is posted here by permission of Philosophical Inquiry for personal use, not for redistribution. The article was published in Philosophical Inquiry, Volume 42, Issue 03, 2017.My goal in this paper is to show that it is not the case that positive duties can be derived
from Kant’s so-called universalizability tests. I begin by explaining in detail what I mean
by this and distinguishing it from a few things that I am not doing in this paper. After that,
I confront the idea of a maxim contradictory, a concept that is advanced by many commentators
in the attempt to derive positive duties from the universalizability tests. I explain
what a maxim contradictory is and how the concept is used to derive positive duties.
Then I argue that the notion of a maxim contradictory presupposes an objectionable form
of maxim realism. I move from there to the idea of a maxim contrary and the deliberative
field. These two ideas are used in tandem by commentators who do not appeal to maxim
contradictories. I explain how these concepts are used to derive positive duties and then I
argue that there is a systematic error in the derivations that enables one to see that they
cannot work
Heidegger\u27s Methodological Maxim
In the Introduction to Being and Time Heidegger calls To the things themselves the maxim of phenomenology. I argue that Heidegger recognized the maxims normativity but thought that Husserls understanding of it made it an inadequate guide for the phenomenological method. I show that Heidegger revised the maxim in his Marburg years with a focus on its role as a principle. The revised maxim specifies how to engage in phenomenological inquiry by calling the phenomenologists attention to the violence our fore-conceptions can do to the way phenomena show themselves. With this revised maxim in mind I reconsider the grounds of Heideggers critique of Husserl in the Marburg years, and explain his conclusion that Husserls phenomenology was unphenomenological. Finally, I show that Heideggers attempts to abide by his more rigorous maxim appear to fail

MAXIM FLOUTING IN “BROOKLYN NINE-NINEâ€
This study aims at identifying the types of maxims flouted by the main characters of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine†and describing the context behind those floutings. The data were taken from the fourth season of “Brooklyn Nine-Nineâ€, an American police procedural comedy TV show. Documentation method was used to collect the data. Descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data by applying Grice’s Cooperative Principle (1975) and Cutting’s Theory of Context (2002). Based on the analysis, all types of conversational maxims were flouted, namely maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. Another finding in this research is that the context behind the floutings were needed to understand the meaning of the utterances. Keywords: Context, Maxim Flouting, Pragmatic
