Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Insight into facilities management market in the UAE:trends, drivers, and threats
PurposeThe UAE is among the fastest-growing facilities management (FM) markets globally. Nevertheless, conclusive evidence on this market is scarce in the literature. Therefore, this paper aims to provide an in-depth insight into the FM market in the UAE.Design/methodology/approachFourteen interviewees were purposively selected to provide insight into FM status through their field experiences. A SWOT analysis of their answers held place.FindingsInterviewees revealed that the main trends of FM in the UAE include interests in sustainability, integration of technology, health and safety, outsourcing FM, switching to total facilities management (TFM), and performance management systems use. Besides, the quality of the service in the FM market is driven by the real-estate boom, services sophistication, the increasing awareness of FM and focus on the quality of services. Furthermore, the interviews found that the recruitment of poorly skilled labors can threaten the FM market to meet the allocated budget, misperception of FM, the value of money, the lack of continuous follow-up with recent advancements in technologies and the lack of performance measurement models.Originality/valueThis paper highlights the major trends, drivers and threats of the FM market in the UAE, and the implications of its findings can direct FM organizations and researchers in their practices
Revolutionizing performance measures and criteria for the facilities management industry in the UAE
PurposeAmidst the complicated nature of the UAE’s facilities management (FM) industry, the need to recalibrate the existing performance measurement (PM) system measures and criteria has been resonating to ensure their ability to capture the FM industry trends and dynamics, thus enhancing organizational excellence. Therefore, this research aimed to propose a specific PM tool to the country’s FM industry to accurately assess performance and establish strategic enhancementsDesign/methodology/approachThe study reviewed literature on the available PM systems to gather the available measures, which were presented to a focus group of seven participants, who were purposively selected based on their expertise in FM and PM implementation in the UAE to adjust them and add ones relevant to the UAE’s FM industry.FindingsThe focus group conducted various changes, from retaining certain measures and criteria, renaming them to simplify or make them more representative of the industry, ranking them based on their importance to limit their numbers, to finally categorizing them as enablers or results. Consequently, the final proposed tool was composed of nine dimensions with 51 measures as performance enablers and three dimensions with 11 measures as performance results. Seven measures were added by the experts, who highlighted their increasing popularity in the UAE’s FM industry.Originality/valueThrough addressing the critical void in literature, this paper develops a specific PM tool aligning with the intricacy of the UAE’s FM industry, thus providing proactive contribution to the industry’s effective and sustainable growth
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Development of a performance measurement model for facilities management industry in the UAE
Facilities management (FM) is a service delivery based industry that contributes added value to organisations. Like other industries, FM organisations are under a constant pressure from shareholders to reduce cost, increase productivity and enhance customer experience. Many frameworks, models and tools have been developed to address the recent advancements in performance measurement (PM). Nevertheless; there is still a gap in the scope of PM in FM, especially in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where there is a lack of an appropriate set of performance measures to be used by FM practitioners.
This research aimed to develop a comprehensive model that proposes appropriate FM performance measures which can be used by FM organisations in UAE. This was achieved by conducting a literature review to investigate current issues in performance measurement and management and analyse the gaps in the UAE market through semi structured interviews; then theoretically develop the PM model that can enhance performance management within the FM industry by leveraging on the literature review and case studies findings. This model was modified based on a facilities management experts’ focus group workshop conducted, then a questionnaire survey was used to explore the opinion of a wider sector of FM Sector to further confirm and adjust the proposed model. Factor analysis with SPSS statistical software was used to help in the data analysis. The last stage was to evaluate and validate the model using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) with the help of AMOS software, and expert’s feedbacks through a questionnaire.
From the findings of this research, it is strongly anticipated that the performance model proposed would enable the FM practitioners, on one hand, to better understand the FM service scopes and the performance specifications and targets that should be achieved within their capacities and the academicians, on the other hand, to introduce a FM tailored PM model and open up new possibilities for academic research, and emphasise an indepth understanding of performance measures and criteria that need to be highlighted in the literature.
The PM model presented at the end of this study is ought to assist FM services to evaluate their performance level, in addition to enhance their services requirements in order to well supply their users
