Generalized Maugis-Dugdale Model of an Elastic Cylinder in Non-Slipping Adhesive Contact with a Stretched Substrate
We have recently developed a generalized JKR model for non-slipping adhesive contact between an elastic cylinder and a stretched substrate where both tangential and normal tractions are transmitted across the contact interface. Here we extend this model to a generalized Maugis-Dugdale model by adopting a Dugdale-type adhesive interaction law to eliminate the stress singularity near the edge of the contact zone. The non-slipping Maugis-Dugdale model is expected to have a broader range of validity in comparison with the non-slipping JKR model. The solution shares a number of common features with experimentally observed behaviors of cell reorientation on a cyclically stretched substrate

A Maugis analysis of adhesive line contact
The Maugis analysis of adhesive circular contacts between spheres is repeated for the band contacts between cylinders. It is found that the same Maugis/Tabor parameter governs the transition between rigid cylinder behaviour and JKR-like behaviour, with the same critical values; however, the pull-off force is not a simple multiple of RAy as with circular contacts, but varies from. T = √8Rσ0Δγ to T = (3/4)(4π E* RΔγ2)1/3. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd

Slope heuristics for variable selection and clustering via Gaussian mixtures
Specific Gaussian mixtures are considered to solve simultaneously variable selection and clustering problems. A penalized likelihood criterion is proposed in Maugis and Michel (2008) to choose the number of mixture components and the relevant variable subset. This criterion is depending on unknown constants to be approximated in practical situations. A "slope heuristics" method is proposed and experimented to deal with this practical problem in this context. Numerical experiments on simulated datasets, a curve clustering example and a genomics application highlight the interest of the proposed heuristics
Effect of surface tension on the behavior of adhesive contact based on Maugis‒Dugdale model.
This present study reconsiders the effect of surface tension on the behavior of adhesive contact between a rigid sphere and an elastic half-plane, in which the adhesive interactions are supposed to follow the Dugdale laws. The adhesive contact issue is transformed into two inter coupled non-linear integral equations which are governed by two parameters: λ (Maugis adhesion parameter) and S (elastocapillary number). By means of iteration method, numeric results are obtained. Analogous to the traditional Maugis-Dugdale (M-D) model, the results provide transition of the pull-off force between JKR and DMT type contact models through the Maugis adhesion parameter λ with a fixed parameter S. On the other hand, with a fixed adhesion parameter λ, we also present the transitions of the pull-off force between four extreme models, named M-D, JKR, Bradley models and Young–Dupre equation, through adjustment of the parameter S. Finally, we find the uniformity and discontinuity of the pressure distribution are affected by the combination of three factors: applied load P, adhesion parameter λ and elastocapillary number S
