Constraining Cycle Alternations in Model Checking for Interval Temporal Logic

    Get PDF
Model checking is one of the most successful techniques in system verification. While a variety of methods and tools exist to check properties expressed in point-based temporal logics, like LTL and CTL, model checking for interval temporal logic has entered the research agenda only very recently. In previous work, we devised a non-elementary model checking procedure for Halpern and Shoham's modal logic of time intervals, interpreted over finite Kripke structures, and an EXPSPACE algorithm for two meaningful fragments of it. In this paper, we show that the latter algorithm can be suitably tailored in order to check a subset of the computations of a system, that satisfy a given bound on the number of cycle alternations, by making use of a polynomial (instead of exponential) working space. We also prove that such a revised algorithm turns out to be complete for Kripke structures whose strongly connected components are simple cycle

Recent history has been the central theme of Argentinean writer Tomas Eloy Martinez. In his two most recognized novels, La novela de Peron (1985) and Santa Evita (1995), he revisits the Peronist period in Argentinean history and attempts to re-write and re-signify traditional accounts of that history while presenting what he hopes is a more balanced interpretation of the Perons and their place in the nation\u27s history. The present dissertation analyses how Martinez uses numerous postmodern narrative strategies such as metafiction, parody, and intertextuality to carry out his revisionist project in the above-mentioned novels. As a point of departure, the dissertation examines the author\u27s critical attitude towards historiography and his skepticism on how history has been represented in his country. Secondly, it studies the transgression of boundaries among literary genres which helps the author represent the Perons in a multifaceted and eclectic way. Through metafiction, the author shares the challenges he faces in the construction of his work, helps the reader follow the storyline, and present information that comes from the non-fictional world. This dissertation also explains how Martinez uses parody in La novela de Peron to deconstruct the idealized version of hi story represented in Peron\u27s Las memorias del General. Of special note is the fact that intertextuality is the most used technique in both novels; indeed, Martinez enters in dialogue with a wide variety of literary sources to support his views on historiography and to bring into question the traditional portrayal of both Peron and Evita in Argentina and in Latin American history. This dissertation concludes that Martinez\u27s two works with the current of postmodern novels which Linda Hutcheon has described as Historiographic Metafiction. That is to say, both novels are intensely self-reflexive and treat historiography as closely-related genres. In fact, Martinez\u27s novels are presented as an alternative to historical accounts of the past. For Martinez, through imagination one can speculate about what might have happened in those mysteries left unexplained by official history and the passing of time. With the diverse array of evidence presented in the novels, the reader is challenged to reevaluate the Perons legacy, a legacy which according to our reading of Martinez can be summarized in two words: authoritarianism and corruption

The Sorrow of Odin the Goth: gli dèi nordici nella ricezione di William Morris

The essay examines the so-called Nordic production of the Victorian intellectual William Morris. After presenting Morris's approach to Nordic subjects and his marked interest in sagas, the author focuses on the representation of the Germanic gods in Morris's works. The result is a reading of the humanisation of the divinities, which are brought closer to human reality, in their suffering but also in their resistance to the vicissitudes of life with that heroic spirit which so fascinated Morris even in the characters of the Nordic sagas. Translation extracts from The Lovers of Gudrun are also offered

Transformation and continuity of the Argentine welfare state -- evaluating social security reform in the 1990s

    Get PDF
Beginning after World War II, Argentina institutionalized a limited conservative corporatist welfare state where occupation-linked social insurance held a central position and social assistance had a residual character. This was called a limited conservative corporatist welfare state, because the huge population within the informal sector was excluded from the main system. A populist government supported by trade unions and the economic model of import-substituting industrialization were the background for the formation of this type of welfare state. During the 1990s, elements of a liberal regime were added to the Argentine welfare state under the reform carried out by the Menem Peronist government. However, social insurance reform and labor reform were not as drastic as the economic reform. They still retained a certain continuity from the traditional systems. The government intended to carry out more drastic social security and labor reform, but was unable to do so due to the legacy of corporatism of the Peronist government.Social security, Social welfare, Argentina

Comparing physiologically relevant corrosion performances of Mg AZ31 alloy protected by ALD and sputter coated TiO2

The utilization of Mg alloys for biomedical applications is so far underexplored due to the accelerated corrosion hampering patient recovery post implantation. Here, we explore the effectiveness of corrosion reduction of an AZ31 alloy in Simulated Body Fluid when coated with a 40 nm sputtered TiO2 layer and compare it to a similar coating made by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). Potentiodynamic polarization and hydrogen evolution experiments were performed on coated samples having different surface roughness and 3D topologies. Interestingly, ALD layers reduce corrosion current density by 94% on Ra = 118.6 ± 5.1 nm and 93% on Ra = 4794.3 ± 49.4 nm, whereas sputtered only by 84% on Ra = 118.6 ± 5.1 nm and 60% on Ra = 4794.3 ± 49.4 nm. Particularly on 3D aspects, the ALD coatings are superior, where a scaffold of 85% porosity with 1 mm pore sizes released 68% lower hydrogen compared to the sputtered counterparts. We relate these observations to the higher surface integrity, adhesion strength and lower line-of-sight restrictions of ALD compared to sputter deposition. The results can be interesting for researchers and practitioners aiming to make Mg alloys more commonplace as temporary metallic implant materials. © 2020 The Author

From Refugees to Immigrants: The Challenges of Slovenian Resettlement to Argentina After World War II

    Get PDF
The author examines a historical case of forced migration that is well documented in national migration research but still lacks specific insight into the conditions of entrance for post-World War II Slovenian refugees and their settlement in Argentina. The author explores the refugee path of Bara Remec and her family, from exile in May 1945 to their settlement in Argentina in 1948. The subjective experience is juxtaposed to the official Argentinean immigration policy of that time, especially conditions of arrival and settlement, with a focus on political, ideological, and religious factors, as well as Argentina’s then-central political decision-maker, Juan D. Peron

Populism in Argentina – seven decades of peronism

Članak prikazuje sedam desetljeća peronizma i njegove ideološke trans-formacije. The first chapter presented the main characteristics of populism in Latin America, while the second and third analyzes the politics of charismatic leaders Peron party - Juan Peron, representative of classical populism, and Carlos Menem, representative of neo-liberal populism. The last chapter is devoted to the ideology and politics of the couple Nestor and Cristina Kirchner. All these Peron leaders, depending on the political situation, maneuvered between the political left and right options. The fact that a populist movement, Peronism, can easily modify your content speaks in favor of the thesis that populism is a poorly-based ideology. The author argues that on the example of economic nationalism and opposition elites and „dangerous to others“ and concludes that, although they represented different ideologies, Peronism, ‘menemism’ and kirchnerism have much more similarities than differences

Deep spectroscopic luminosity function of Abell 85 : no evidence for a steep upturn of the faint-end slope

The resulting LF from 438 cluster members is best modelled by a double Schechter function due to the presence of a statistically significant upturn at the faint end. The amplitude of this upturn (αf ~ -1.58+0.19-0.15), however, is much smaller than that of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) composite photometric cluster LF by Popesso et al., αf ∼ −2. The faint-end slope of the LF in A85 is consistent, within the uncertainties, with that of the field. The red galaxy population dominates the LF at low luminosities, and is the main factor responsible for the upturn. The fact that the slopes of the spectroscopic LFs in the field and in a cluster as massive as A85 are similar suggests that the cluster environment does not play a major role in determining the abundance of low-mass galaxies.Peer reviewe

    Get PDF
Gerbert de Montreuil's Roman de la Violette is a XIIIth century text dedicated to Marie, countess of Ponthieu, and belongs to the wager cycle, in which women are falsely accused. The author aims so to glorify women's virtues and is. Using the enchâssement technique of lyric insertions into a narrative, and relating the misadventures of a young couple of heroes, the author inscribes this novel of popular origin in a typical arthurian errance scheme, a solid structure that can support any thematic development. On one hand, the different adventures based on the quête scheme, allow the author to repeatedly question the courtly world and its inhabitants. On the other, lyric insertions chosen in the repertoires of the first and second generation of troubadours and trouvères, voice the characters’ love discourse, creating different effects throughout the text. Gerbert questions both the Arthurian values and traditional courtly rhetoric, and plays with his public by challenging and frustrating their aesthetic expectations, showing a conscious and playful distance from his models. By glorifying his patron and manifesting a strong opposition against any usurpation of the rights on a land—Marie of Ponthieu was a victim of such crime after Bouvines battle—Gerbert stands out in late Medieval literature: behind the mis à mal of certain codes and traditions, one can see his ironic smile.
