Objectives: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Germany and worldwide. In case of a recurrence, the immunohistochemical characteristics of the primary tumor is used to determine the treatment approach. However, some studies show that a change in hormone receptor status occurs often and should be considered for the treatment of a breast cancer recurrence. Design and Methods: We collected retrospective data of 331 patients of the University Hospital of Erlangen, Germany, regarding the immunohistochemical characteristics (Progesterone receptor status - PR, Estrogen receptor status - ER and proliferation index - Ki-67) of the primary tumor as well as the breast cancer recurrence. A change in receptor status and influencing factors were analyzed. Observations and Results: In comparison to the primary tumor, changes in the status of progesterone receptor of the recurrence tumor were seen often, even more often than changes of the status of estrogen receptors. The loss of expression is the most common change in status. In half of the cases, the expression of Ki-67 was constant. Of all the examined factors, our study showed that the tumor stadium (T) of the primary breast cancer alone had a significant influence on the change of progesterone receptor status in the case of breast cancer recurrence. Parts of these results were published in: SM Jud, R Hatko, J Emons, B Lauterbach, CC Hack, C Preuß, W Adler, MW Beckmann, F Heindl “Discordance between primary breast cancer and ipsilateral breast cancer tumor recurrence as a function of distance” Journal of Clinical Medicine 2020 Conclusion: Our study supports the knowledge gained by new research. Examining the molecular characteristics of recurrences is very important - lastly in order to be able to offer the patient a tailored treatment for breast cancer recurrence. Teilergebnisse der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden veröffentlicht in: SM Jud, R Hatko, J Emons, B Lauterbach, CC Hack, C Preuß, W Adler, MW Beckmann, F Heindl “Discordance between primary breast cancer and ipsilateral breast cancer tumor recurrence as a function of distance” Journal of Clinical Medicine 2020 Schlussfolgerungen: Unsere Studie unterstützt die Erkenntnisse aus der neueren Forschung.

Deepening European Financial Integration: Theoretical Considerations and Empirical Evaluation of Growth and Employment Benefits

This paper analyses some long-run macroeconomic effects of European financial integration. In particular we focus on the further reduction and abolition of cross-border barriers impeding the entry into the markets of banking and insurance products. We follow a theoretical as well as an empirical approach to make predictions about how deeper integration will affect growth and unemployment rates. In our growth model we show that enhanced foreign financial market penetration should increase the overall growth rate unambiguously. The empirical analysis includes a wide set of indicators, each of them capturing different aspects of financial development and financial market integration. On the basis of the estimations a weak growth impact of foreign market penetration can be identified. Hence, deeper financial integration generates a growth bonus. But the long-run growth effect is conditional on differences in institutional characteristics captured by country-specific effects. The analysis is supplemented by an analysis of the potential employment benefits of deeper financial integration. We show that the growth bonus can be transformed into an employment bonus, but also not without considering substantial country-specific differences.economic growth; unemployment; European integration
