Wisdom and apocalyptic in the Gospel of Matthew : a comparative study with 1 Enoch and 4QInstruction
Recent scholarship has demonstrated that Matthew's gospel has significantly developed
both sapiential and apocalyptic elements within its narrative. Little attention has been paid,
however, to the question of how these two features of Matthew's gospel might relate to one
another. It is this gap in scholarly literature that the present study is intended to fill, by means of a
comparative study with two other texts of mixed genre: 1 Enoch and 4Qlnstruction.
An examination of these texts demonstrates that each is marked by an inaugurated
eschatology, within which the revealing of wisdom to an elect group, defined in distinction to the
Jewish parent group, serves as the pivotal moment of inauguration. In addition, within
4Qlnstruction the idea is developed that possession of this revealed wisdom allows the remnant
to live in fidelity to the will of the Creator and to the patterns built-in to the original creation.
Thus, possession of revealed wisdom facilitates a recovery of creation.
These findings provide lines of enquiry that may be brought to Matthew. Three sections
of the gospel are examined (chapters 5-7; 11-12; 24-25). It is argued that Jesus is presented as an
eschatological figure who reveals wisdom to an elect group. This wisdom cannot be reduced to
great moral insight or interpretation of Torah, but is presented as prophetic revelation, happening
in eschatological time. It remains the case, however, that Matthew presents it as wisdom and
presents Jesus as a sage.
More tentatively, it is suggested that creation provides the patterns for the ethical
requirements of Jesus' wisdom, thus indicating that the idea of restored creation is also at work in
Matthew. The fall of the temple may also be connected in Matthew's narrative to such a
restoration, but again, the evidence for this is not clear

Dilation methods in semigroup dynamics and noncommutative convexity
Since seminal work of Stinespring, Arveson, and others, dilation theory has been an indispensable tool for understanding operator algebras. Dilations are fundamental to the representation theory of operator systems and (non-selfadjoint) operator algebras. This thesis is a compilation of three research papers in operator algebras and noncommutative convexity linked by their use of dilations and operator systems.
A semicrossed product is a non-selfadjoint operator algebra encoding the action of a semigroup on an operator or C*-algebra. In Chapter 2, we describe the C*-envelopes of a large class of semicrossed products. We prove that, when the positive cone of a discrete lattice ordered abelian group acts on a C*-algebra, the C*-envelope of the associated semicrossed product is a full corner of a crossed product by the whole group. After dilating the semigroup action to an automorphic action of the whole group using a direct product construction, we explicitly compute the Shilov ideal and therefore compute the C*-envelope. This generalizes a result of Davidson, Fuller, and Kakariadis from Z_+^n to the class of all discrete lattice ordered abelian groups.
Chapters 3 and 4 present results in noncommutative (or ``matrix") convexity. By the noncommutative Kadison duality of Webster-Winkler and Davidson-Kennedy in the unital setting, and Kennedy-Kim-Manor in the nonunital setting, the category of compact noncommutative (nc) convex sets is dual to the category of operator systems. Thus nc convexity allows a new avenue to study operator systems geometrically. In Chapter 3, we prove a noncommutative generalization of the classical Jensen's Inequality for multivariable nc functions which are convex in each variable separately. The proof involves a sequence of dilations resembling a noncommutative analogue of Fubini's Theorem. This extends a single-variable nc version of Jensen's Inequality of Davidson and Kennedy. We demonstrate an application of the multivariable separate nc Jensen's Inequality to free semicircular systems in free probability.
In Chapter 4, we discuss duals of operator systems. Recently, C.K. Ng obtained a nice duality theory for operator systems. Call a (possibly nonunital) operator system S dualizable if its dual S* embeds into B(H) via a complete order embedding and complete norm equivalence. Through the nonunital noncommutative Kadison duality of Kennedy, Kim, and Manor, we characterize dualizability of S using geometric conditions on its associated nc convex quasistate space K in two ways. Firstly, in terms of an nc affine embedding of K into the nc unit ball of a Hilbert space satisfying a certain extension property. Secondly, we show that Ng's characterization is dual to a normality condition between K and the nc cone R_+ K. As applications, we obtain some permanence properties for dualizability, and give a new nc convex-geometric proof of Choi's Theorem

Evaluation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica inactivation in water by several treatment technologies
Water treatment technologies are necessary for microbial pathogen removal from potable water. Human activities, including large industries in agriculture and manufacturing, produce massive amounts of waste that invariably end up in water supplies. There will always be a need for water treatment technologies that evolve and progress as waste volume and complexity increases. Further exploration and development of current treatment methods will be necessary to match this demand.
In this study, wintergreen essential oil, physical filtration, iodine and chlorine dioxide tablets, sunlight, artificial UV light, and TiO2 photocatalyst treatment methods and their effects on waterborne pathogens Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica are evaluated. The effect of wintergreen essential oil derived from Gaultheria procumbens was analyzed against E. coli and S. enterica in concentrations of 5 μL/1.5 mL, 2.5 μL/1.5 mL, and 1 μL/1.5 mL (wintergreen/sterilized deionized water). Experiments of UV lamp exposure, with and without immobilized TiO2 photocatalyst, were performed to determine pathogen inactivation efficiency. Sunlight alone and with immobilized TiO2 photocatalyst were studied for pathogen inactivation potential as well. Lastly, physical filtration via portable backpacking pump filter and purification by emergency chlorine dioxide and iodine tablets were tested for removal and purification efficiencies against E. coli and S. enterica. Bacterial viability was quantified by serial dilution and viable plate counting.
Preliminary experiments were also done to develop methods and procedures, including the effect of refrigerated storage on E. coli viability in Tryptic Soy Broth and the development of E. coli and S. enterica growth curves by optical density at 600 nm (OD 600 ) with spectrophotometry measurements. Results of these experiments are discussed and compared. Statistical analysis via one-way ANOVA with a post-hoc Tukey HSD was used to analyze difference in treatments for significance. Results showed pathogen removal for all technologies studied, to varying degrees. Some examples include: 5-log reduction was achieved in E. coli with sunlight-only at 6 hours; 3-log reduction was achieved in S. enterica with sunlight-only at 7.5 hours, E. coli UV lamp-only at 8 hours, E. coli and S. enterica with sunlight/TiO2 at 6 and 7.5 hours, respectively, and E. coli with a 5 μL concentration of Wintergreen essential oil at 50 minutes; 3-log reduction in E. coli was observed when the 5 μL concentration of wintergreen essential oil was applied for 50 minutes, 2-log reduction in E. coli was observed after 50 minutes of 2.5 μL concentration treatment, while the 1 μL concentration of wintergreen essential oil achieved only a 40% reduction in E. coli at 50 minutes. Applications of Operator Systems in Dynamics, Correlation Sets, and Quantum Graphs
The recent works of Kalantar-Kennedy, Katsoulis-Ramsey, Ozawa, and Dykema-Paulsen have demonstrated that many problems in the theory of operator algebras and quantum information can be approached by looking at various subspaces of bounded operators on a Hilbert space. This thesis is a compilation of papers written by the author with various coauthors that apply the theory of operator systems to expand on some of these results. This thesis is split into two parts.
In Part I, we start by expanding on the theory of crossed product of operator algebras of Katsoulis and Ramsey. We first develop an analogous crossed product of operator systems. We then reduce two open problems on the uniqueness of universal crossed product operator algebras into one of operator systems and show that it has answers in the negative. In the final chapter of Part I, we generalize results of Kakariadis, Dor On-Salmon, and Katsoulis- Ramsey to characterize which tensor algebras of C*-correspondences admit hyperrigidity.
In Part II, we look at synchronous correlation sets, introduced by Dykema-Paulsen as a symmetric form of Tsirelson’s quantum correlation sets. These sets have the distinct advantage that there is a nice C*-algebraic characterization that we present in Chapter 6. We show that the correlation sets coming from the tensor models on finite and infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces cannot be distinguished by synchronous correlation sets and that one can distinguish this set from the correlation sets which arise as limits of correlation sets arising from finite dimensional tensor models. Beyond this, we show that Tsirelson’s problem is equivalent its synchronous analogue, expanding on a result of Dykema-Paulsen.
We end the thesis by looking at generalizations of graphs by the ways of operator subspaces of the space of matrices. We construct an analogue of the graph complement and show its robustness by deriving various generalizations of known graph inequalities
NGO communication and activism via electronic media: Australian evidence
Non-government organisations (NGOs) communicate their ideas and views in a variety of ways, but electronic means are becoming more pervasive. Most NGOs have a website and many provide free information through subscriptions to electronically mailed newsletters and updates. Communication between NGOs and corporate entities, in particular, is an area that has not been investigated to a large extent, even though research on companies' social and environmental record has regularly referred to the influence of NGOs on corporate reporting practices. The purpose of this study is, therefore, twofold. It examines the Australian websites of eight large NGOs and provides an assessment of each site based on an evaluative framework. It then provides a more in-depth investigation into one of those elements: action or activism. In particular, the paper considers if and how NGOs engage in activism directed at companies or corporate entities via their webpages and through email. The results show that the websites of the sample NGOs are generally of good quality aesthetically, and provide relevant information on issues and campaigns. They do use their websites for activist purposes, but most commonly information on websites for activist purposes, but most commonly information on websites that refers to companies concerns relationships and partnerships, rather than providing any negative views or challenging corporate activities.Carol A.
