The project FIT4REUSE will provide safe, sustainable, and accepted ways of water supply for the Mediterranean basin by exploiting non-conventional water resources. Reclaimed water and desalinated water can contribute to compensate the gap between agricultural water demand and supply and provide consistently high-quality water throughout the year. FIT4REUSE will focus on innovative, sustainable, and safe treatment technologies, and on the use of reclaimed water and desalinated water in agriculture and for aquifer recharge. Also, specific methodological and assessment tools framework will be created to meet the project objectives. The report “Data collection protocol and matrix” details the key data and information required to analyse the sustainability impacts (environmental, social, and economic) of different non-conventional water reuse systems in FIT4REUSE project. The sustainability assessment will be conducted through the application of different methodologies: life cycle thinking (LCT) methods, such as life cycle assessment (LCA), social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC); and cost-benefit analysis (CBA). Those analysis will be carried out over 4 case studies, one per FIT4REUSE country where experiments are developed. This report is structured as follows: Chapter 1 provides the objectives of the work, while Chapter 2 offers the general method for data collection and analysis connected with the previous outcome of FIT4REUSE, deliverable 7.1. Chapter 3 details the data collection matrix and Chapter 4 drafts key information regarding the case studies technologies and locations where it is expected to apply the sustainability assessment methodology

Structural change in Republika Srpska. Small farms between subsistence orientation and modernization

    Get PDF
The paper aims to analyze the main barriers and opportunities for the modernization of the agricultural sector of Republika Srpska with a specific focus on the role of small farms. A particular attention has been given to specific elements related to the human, social, and institutional capital. Methodologically the work has been based on an extensive desk research, on the use of a field survey and on a number of personal interviews with national experts and professionals. Overall the investigation has also greatly benefited from the theoretical framework elaborated by R.Yin within the “case study methodology”

    No full text

Remittance inflow and smallholder farming practices. The case of Moldova

    Get PDF
In the Republic of Moldova, a large number of households that received land shares after the break-down of the collective farm structure currently focus on semi-subsistence agriculture. Often, one or more members of these households have migrated abroad. This paper aims at assessing the impact of remittances on their agricultural production practices and investments. The authors rely on the rotating panel dataset of the Household Budget Survey for the period 2007–2013, and on an original survey carried out on a sample of 126 households in 2015. To test if remittance recipients replace family labour and self-produced inputs with mechanisation services and purchased inputs, a shadow agricultural wage is estimated. Logistic regressions are used to assess whether the occurrence of investments (farmland, machinery, or dairy cattle) is more probable in the case of remittance inflow. The results show that recipient households reduce their drudgery by substituting family labour and self-produced seeds and feed with mechanisation services and purchased inputs, without necessarily increasing production efficiency. The relationship between remittances and agricultural investments is very weak or negative. However, qualitative insights demonstrate that many investments (greenhouses, rototillers, walnut orchards, etc.) were possible thanks to remittances. Although most recipients do not invest in agriculture, the minority that does invest has access to remittances

Consumers' food cycle and household waste. When behaviors matter

    Get PDF
Recent studies have shown that consumers encounter various conflicting motivations that influence the prevention of household food waste. Food choices are rooted in deep-seated judgments, such as emotions, habits, and values, thus raising the cognitive dissonance between motivation and behavior (intention-behavior gap). The complexity of this subject increases when considering that food waste is driven by repetitive, multiple, and hidden individual choices and influenced by a composite set of situational factors. This study argues the presence of a critical distance between food choices and waste generation in homes and this factual interval (behavior-outcome gap) further affects consumer's decision-making when comparing available options. Employing data from a three-year survey of a national representative panel of Italian consumers, this study develops a system of regression models using path analysis methodology. The objective is to measure the relationships between the different phases of the food consumption cycle and rank their contribution to waste. The results suggest that the more upstream the phase, the stronger the influence on food waste generation in homes. Purchasing emerges as the most critical choice of the consumers' food waste cycle. This gap between behavior and outcome adds uncertainty to food decisions, which reverberates on behavioral beliefs and as a result, leads consumers to resort to heuristics. The findings allow for the identification of a set of behavioral patterns with implications on food waste generation. Furthermore, purchasing decisions are exposed to out-of-home contextual factors, suggesting that food retail can affect consumer behaviors relevant to household food waste

TERRITORIAL GOVERNANCE IN RURAL BOSNIA: THE ROLE OF LOCAL INSTITUTIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS IN SARAJEVO OMANIJA REGION

    Get PDF
Rural economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is getting more diversified and it is slowly moving out from the traditional dependency on the agricultural sector. Although national and municipal budgets are still mainly focused on direct support to production, the number of organizations engaged in rural governance is rapidly growing and their role in policy design and delivery is getting increasingly important. The aim of this paper is to analyze the network and the coordination capacity of local agro-rural organisations operating in Sarajevo-Romanija region (SRr, BiH) and the level of inclusion of local community members’ in these organizations. A set of policies and instruments to improve local institutions coordination is also proposed and discussed. Methodologically the paper is based on an extended desk research, on a number of interviews with sectoral experts and local administrators and on a field survey focusing on 35 households in seven municipalities of SRr
