The diagnostic performance of dental maturity for identification of the circumpubertal growth phases: a meta-analysis.
The present meta-analysis initially evaluates the reliability of dental maturation in the identification of the circumpubertal growth phases, essentially for determining treatment timing in orthodontics. A literature survey was performed using the Medline, LILACS and SciELO databases, and the Cochrane Library (2000 to 2011). Studies of the correlation between dental and cervical vertebral maturation methods were considered. The mandibular canine, the first and second premolars, and the second molar were investigated. After the selection, six articles qualified for the final analysis. The overall correlation coefficients were all significant, ranging from 0.57 to 0.73. Five of these studies suggested the use of dental maturation as an indicator of the growth phase. However, the diagnostic performance analysis uncovered limited reliability only for the identification of the pre-pubertal growth phase. The determination of dental maturity for the assessment of treatment timing in orthodontics is not recommended
Brain 18F-FDG and 18F-Flumetamol PET Imaging of Fragile X-Associated Tremor Ataxia Syndrome
Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) is a rare movement disorder caused by a 55-to-200 CGG-trinucleotide expansion premutation in the FMR1 gene. Core diagnostic criteria are tremor, ataxia, and T2-weighted hyperintensity of the middle cerebellar peduncles on MRI, but FXTAS encompass a broad spectrum of neurological symptoms. FXTAS pathophysiology is largely unknown, and some animal models and neuropathology findings suggest possible overlap with Alzheimer disease. We report the combined PET imaging of a genetically confirmed FXTAS patient, presenting reduced temporal-frontal 18F-FDG uptake, and pathological cortical deposition of amyloid to 18F-flumetamol PET scan. This report may offer clues to FXTAS pathophysiology

Dental Patients’ Perspective on COVID-19: A Systematic Review
Definition: DefinitionThe COVID-19 epidemic has changed patients’ approach to dental treatments. While dentists worldwide have shown an excellent level of adaptability to face the new challenges presented by the unprecedented situation due to the rapid spread of COVID-19, dental patients have witnessed a sudden suspension of elective treatments and a slow resumption of dental care activities after several national lockdowns. In addition, the general climate of anxiety and fear due to the high COVID-19 risk and the high level of mortality has influenced the perception and attitudes of people towards dental activity, inducing many dental patients to avoid appointments to the dentist if not highly urgent. We present an overview of the current state of knowledge about dental patients’ perception, perspective, attitude, and expectations towards a full resumption of regular dental treatments
Translation and Validation of Italian Version of Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear (IDAF-4C+): A Cross-Sectional Study
Dental anxiety (DA) is defined as unreasonable apprehension toward dental procedures. About 4–20% of the worldwide adult population presents DA, with peaks of 30% in the younger population. Managing patients with dental anxiety and fear with a reliable and valid instrument is necessary to understand the multidimensional dimensions of dental fear. This work aimed to validate the Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear (IDAF-4C+) into Italian. Two hundred and eighty dental students attending an Italian university were enrolled. The IDAF-4C+ was translated by experts and a native English translator, blinded to the original version. The Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) was used to assess the validity of IDAF-4C+. Spearman correlation coefficients and Exploratory Factorial Analysis (EFA) were used. Reliability was evaluated by Cronbach’s alpha. The reliability of the Italian version of IDAF-4C+ was good (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.88). Correlation between IDAF-4C+ and MDAS ranged between 0.42 to 0.68. From EFA, one factor explained 58.76% of the common variance. Women showed a higher level of dental fear. The Italian IDAF-4C+ is a valid and reliable tool to assess DA in any clinical context. This instrument allows for a proper understanding and management of DA, and therefore a better patient oral health-related quality of life and compliance with the dentist’s instructions

Subcrestal versus Bone-Level One-Stage Implants: Early Bone and Soft Tissues Modification: One-Year Randomized Clinical Trial
Reducing marginal bone resorption is a challenge in implant dentistry. Sub-gingival implant placement has been suggested as a suitable strategy to avoid long-term esthetic and biological complications. A total of 38 healthy patients received bone-level (BLG-Control) or 2 mm sub-crestal (SCG-Test) conical connection, platform-switched implants. The test group received an immediate tissue-level abutment, following the one-time abutment (OTA) concept. Marginal bone modification (MBM) was calculated on standardized radiographs at surgery (T0), loading (T1), and 6 (T2) and 12 (T3) months after loading and classified as bone loss (BL) if it occurred below the implant neck and bone remodeling (BR) if above. Pocket-probing depth (PPD), Bleeding on probing (BoP), and Plaque Index (PI) were collected. At 12 months, the mean MBM was 0.61 mm in the test group and 0.52 mm in the control group. In all the cases of the test group (SCG), MBM occurred only above the implant neck, therefore being classified as BR, and no BL was observed. In the control group (BLG), MBM occurred below the implant neck, thus corresponding entirely to BL. The test group had an average PPD of 2.38 mm compared to 3.04 mm in the control group, with BoP at 50% and 43%, and PI at 33% and 19.44%, respectively. At one year after loading, sub-crestal conical connection, platform-switched implants show comparable MBM to bone level implants; however, no bone loss was observed
