Around the nostos’s experience: The returns of Antonio Dal Masetto and Martina Gusberti to the homeland

La tierra incomparable (1994) by Antonio Dal Masetto and El laúd y la guerra (1995) by Martina Gusberti are novels written by Italian-Argentine authors in which the experience of returning to their native land is recounted. TREM-1 promotes intestinal tumorigenesis.

    No full text
Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (TREM-1) is a potent amplifier of pro-inflammatory innate immune responses. Increasing evidence suggests a role for TREM-1 not only in acute pathogen-induced reactions but also in chronic and non-infectious inflammatory disorders, including various types of cancer. Here, we demonstrate that genetic deficiency in Trem1 protects from colorectal cancer. In particular, Trem1 (-/-) mice exhibited reduced tumor numbers and load in an experimental model of inflammation-driven tumorigenesis. Gene expression analysis of Trem1 (-/-) versus Trem1 (+/+) tumor tissue demonstrated distinct immune signatures. Whereas Trem1 (-/-) tumors showed an increased abundance of transcripts linked to adaptive immunity, Trem1 (+/+) tumors were characterized by overexpression of innate pro-inflammatory genes associated with tumorigenesis. Compared to adjacent tumor-free colonic mucosa, expression of Trem1 was increased in murine and human colorectal tumors. Unexpectedly, TREM-1 was not detected on tumor-associated Ly6C(-) MHC class II(+) macrophages. In contrast, TREM-1 was highly expressed by tumor-infiltrating neutrophils which represented the predominant myeloid population in Trem1 (+/+) but not in Trem1 (-/-) tumors. Collectively, our findings demonstrate a clear role of TREM-1 for intestinal tumorigenesis and indicate TREM-1-expressing neutrophils as critical players in colorectal tumor development

Clean and efficient dual-fuel combustion using OMEx as high reactivity fuel: comparison to diesel-gasoline calibration

[EN] From previous results in a single-cylinder engine platform, it can be concluded that the dual-mode dual-fuel (DMDF) concept can be a potential solution to overcome the major constraints found with other single-fuel low temperature combustion modes. To extend these findings to a real application, this work evaluates the potential of the diesel-gasoline DMDF concept on a multi-cylinder 8L engine in terms of performance and emissions. To do this, a full engine calibration map was obtained following a specific methodology. The emissions results show that diesel-gasoline DMDF allows to achieve EURO VI NOx and soot emissions in a great portion of the engine map. Nonetheless, the levels of these pollutant at high load conditions exceed the EURO VI limits by far due to the need of implementing a diffusive combustion strategy with high EGR levels to avoid excessive in-cylinder pressure gradients. To mitigate this issue, the use of Oxymethylene ether (OMEx) instead of diesel fuel is proposed. A dedicated engine calibration was developed for the OMEx-gasoline DMDF concept following the same methodology. The results show that the oxygen content in the OMEx molecule allows to achieve a fully EUVI compliant engine calibration in terms of NOx with engine-out soot levels lower than 0.01 g/kWh. Moreover, due to the lower stoichiometric air-fuel ratio with this fuel, the air management system requirements are lower, reducing the pumping losses and increasing the brake thermal efficiency in most of the calibration map.The authors thanks ARAMCO Overseas Company and VOLVO Group Trucks Technology for supporting this research. Assessment of a complete truck operating under dual-mode dual-fuel combustion in real life applications: Performance and emissions analysis

    No full text
[EN] The dual-mode dual-fuel (DMDF) strategy has been demonstrated to be a potential combustion mode to cover all the engine map with low-to-moderate NOx and soot emissions and high efficiency simultaneously. This can be accomplished by modifying the injection strategy to promote a fully premixed or a dual-fuel diffusive combustion depending on the operating conditions. The main limitation of the DMDF are the high concentrations of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide coupled with low exhaust temperatures, which can be a challenge for the stock diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). Moreover, the use of a diffusive combustion combined with high EGR rates to avoid mechanical issues at high load enhances the soot formation, which can compromise the final soot levels in a homologation cycle. To evaluate these aspects, this work studies the performance and emissions of a DMDF truck concept along a WHVC and different in-service conformity cycles through vehicle systems simulations. For both types of cycles, five payloads were tested (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) to evaluate the impact of this parameter on the operating points distribution inside the DMDF map. The first results show that the DMDF concept provides engine-out NOx levels below the EUVI regulation at normative payload (50%) with similar fuel consumption than the conventional diesel truck. On the other hand, the engine-out HC and CO emissions exceed their respective limits in all the cases, while the engine-out soot emissions only reach the EUVI levels up to 25% payload. By this reason, the stock DOC and diesel particulate filter from the conventional diesel truck were modelled and fitted to the DMDF truck model. The results evidenced that the use of these two ATS allows to achieve the EUVI limits in terms of tailpipe HC, CO and soot independently on the cycle and payload analyzed. Moreover, considering the tailpipe emissions values achieved with ATS at 50% payload, it can be inferred that both devices could be downsized for the DMDF application as compared to the conventional ATS for diesel applications. The authors thanks ARAMCO Overseas Company and VOLVO Group Trucks Technology for supporting this research.
