Matteo Di Giovanni: Documents and a Critical Catalogue of His Panel Paintings. (Volumes I and II) (Sienese, Italian).
In response to a need for an up-to-date and accessible gathering of information on the Sienese Quattrocento painter Matteo di Giovanni di Bartolo (c.1430-c.1498), my intention in this dissertation is to assemble, organize and augment the records currently available for the artist's life and for his works on panel. The available literature has been thoroughly reviewed, the paintings have been examined either in person or in photographs, and the Sienese archives have been explored both to check the published documents against the originals, and to bring to light new notices for Matteo di Giovanni. Chapter I consists of a biographical essay incorporating a brief survey of the artist's career highlighted by his major works. The second chapter is an exp and ed catalogue of the known documents concerning his life and commissions. Of the fifty-seven entries, thirty-nine are new documents here transcribed and interpreted for the first time. Of particular interest are records confirming Matteo's authorship of two of his late attributed works, and notices which seem to indicate that he died several years later than is normally assumed. Chapter III is a critical catalogue of Matteo's panel paintings, divided into four sections. The first, consisting of those works accepted as autograph or by the master in major part, is followed by the pictures by his workshop, a group of lost works, and , finally, those pictures which cannot be given to Matteo di Giovanni. An Appendix contains three new documents for one of Matteo's finest and best-known commissions, the Placidi altarpiece of 1476. If future students of Sienese painting find this study useful for their investigations, then its purpose will have been fulfilled.PhDFine artsUniversity of Michiganhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/161471/1/8712224.pd

Cammini d'Italia.
Presence/Absence of Alexander of Aphrodisias in Renaissance Cosmo-Psychology
This essay traces some general lines underscoring the presence of Epicurean themes in the comet controversies of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I specifically consider atomistic and corpuscular motifs connecting the debates on new stars and comets before and after Kepler. Atomism and the corruptibility of the heavens – theses that were reinforced by observations of celestial novelties – were at odds with the harmonic vision of the world that Kepler had embraced from the outset of his astronomical enterprise, as is clearly evidenced by the theological speculations of 'Mysterium cosmographicum' (1596). In turn, atomistic theories rehabilitated infinitism and cosmological homogeneity, while undermining faith in divine providence and the harmony of Creation
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
