Revisiting the 1888 Hertz experiment
We revisit the original experiment performed by Hertz in 1888 and use a simple setup to produce electromagnetic waves with a frequency in the range of 3 MHz. By doing a Fourier analysis of the signal captured by. a resonant antenna, we can study the behavior of the RLC series circuit, frequency splitting of coupled resonances, and the characteristics of the near-field emitted by the loop antenna. Spectrum to distance mapping via nonlinear airy pulses
We show that the spectra of Airy pulses reshape into one or two self-shifting peaks for normal or anomalous dispersion during nonlinear evolution, respectively. Those peaks effectively map the longitudinal coordinate into the frequency domain. © OSA 2013

Collapse arrest in instantaneous kerr media via parametric interactions
We demonstrate a four wave mixing interaction based on four wave mixing that can arrest the collapse and stabilize solitary propagation in a pure Kerr material by controlling the wavelength of the interacting beams
High-intensity self-accelerating Airy pulses and controllable spectral shifting in nonlinear Kerr media
We show that high-intensity Airy pulses propagating in Kerr-type nonlinear media can preserve their self-accelerating features under appropriate conditions. By engineering the input pulses, controllable spectral shifting and reshaping are achieved. © 2012 OSA
Notch nonlinear frequency shift in AlGaAs bragg grating waveguides
We present an investigation on the nonlinear dynamics of intense pulses in an AlGaAs Bragg waveguide and we report the experimental observation of an intensity dependent blue-shift of the Bragg notch spectral line. © OSA/ANIC/IPR/Sensors/SL/SOF/SPPCom/2011
Enhanced detection of broadband terahertz fields via the filamentation of chirped optical pulses
We show that by employing positively chirped optical probe pulses above a critical power it is possible to enhance the detection bandwidth and signal obtained by Air Biased Coherent Detection scheme for broadband terahertz fields. © 2012 OSA
AlGaAs-OI Waveguides for Nonlinear Applications (Conference Presentation)
Aluminium Gallium Arsenide (AlGaAs) is regarded as a very promising material for non-linear optical applications thanks to its strong second and third order non-linear coefficients. Moreover, its bandgap can be easily increased to values above 1.3 eV by varying the percentage of Aluminium, which mitigates the two photon absorption at telecom wavelengths that typically hinders the use of silicon based devices for these applications. However, the major drawback of GaAs/AlGaAs waveguides lies in the relatively low modal confinement in the vertical direction that translates into high propagation losses. The integration of an AlGaAs core on a silica cladding layer (i.e. AlGaAs on Insulator or AlGaAs-OI) is a very new and promising material platform for non-linear photonics as it combines the superior non-linear properties of AlGaAs with the very strong modal confinement offered by the low refractive index of the silica cladding. To date the most challenging aspect of AlGaAs-OI has been in the fabrication of the platform itself. In this talk key aspects regarding the design, fabrication and testing of AlGaAs-OI waveguides for nonlinear applications shall be explored, focussing on the fabrication challenges and how they were overcome. In particular, we will review AlGaAs epilayer designs with stop-etch layers that allow effective removal of the GaAs substrate and dry etching chemistries for smooth and vertical waveguide sidewalls. We will also discuss how these different designs and fabrication techniques impact on the waveguide propagation losses and on the performance of micro-ring resonators for non-linear applications
