Five Easy Pieces dedicated to Ludovico Quaroni
No full textThe first edition of this book was published in Italian in 1989, about two years after the death of Ludovico Quaroni; this edition in English is addressed mainly to non-Italian scholars with an interest in modern architecture in Italy. Given the imperfect parallel between musical and literary composition, therefore, in this book an intimate intellectual atmosphere prevails, which reveals the author’s skill in creating a narrative and also in engaging in a type of critical writing that is rarely undertaken by architect-intellectuals. The five episodes in the book cover almost thirty years, from 1958 to 1987, which were years that remained deeply preserved in the author’s memory. The literary form of the pieces gives all of them a common structure: they are dialogues; usually consisting of brief exchanges of few words, spoken or written, between the author (Lucio Barbera) and Quaroni. In one of them – Charisma – the dialogue takes place between Quaroni and a larger chorus. In another – Elective Misunderstanding – we have a double dialogue at a distance, a trio, if we return to the musical metaphor, between Quaroni, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso and Barbera. The last piece is a longer conversation by Quaroni on himself; a taking stock and a valediction. On the frontispiece, Barbera gives a clear indication of his intentions: “For students of Architecture who are well-educated and for architects interested in getting to know better a Master of their trade”

No full textSu Enrico Calandra (1877-1946) ha pesato un lungo silenzio storiografico, interrotto solo sporadicamente da voci che provengono dal passato. Le memorie dei suoi allievi – tra questi Giuseppe Samonà, Lina Bo, Bruno Zevi – ci consegnano il ritratto di un maestro in anni che di maestri sono assai poveri. Attraverso lettere, scritti e disegni emersi dall’archivio dell’architetto, questo libro restituisce in un’unica immagine i molti volti di Enrico Calandra: quello del giovane architetto alla ricerca della modernità, quello del maestro amatissimo dagli allievi più diversi, quello dello storico dell’architettura impegnato nella definizione dei fondamenti di una disciplina che da allora, grazie anche ai suoi studi, appartiene agli architetti. Le tracce di una storia individuale e familiare che ha origine nella Sicilia di fine Ottocento ci conducono lontano verso una storia dell’architettura – e non solo – che racconta l’Italia negli anni difficili delle guerre mondiali e del regime fascista

Ervi, the intraspecific Barbera x Croatina crossbreed: first growing and winemaking experiences in Lombardia (northwest of Italy)
No full textBarbera and Croatina are the two most important grapevine varieties characterizing wines from several districts in North-West of Italy; they coexist on the hilly territories sited south of the Po river (historically known as “western-cispadana” area) where they are also blended together to obtain local wines such as Buttafuoco and Rosso Oltrepo Pavese in Lombardia, and Gutturnio in Emilia Romagna. Ervi is an intraspecific crossbreed between Barbera and Croatina performed in the ‘70s and selected over the last decades in order to improve some agronomical traits of both parents. The present study represents the first characterization of development, production and enological performance of the cv. Ervi in Lombardia and, more specifically, in the Oltrepo Pavese wine district. Long-term results related to a field-based assessment as well as the sensory profiling of wines produced at a micro scale are reported. When compared to Barbera and Croatina, Ervi shows improved productivity respect to Croatina and a better composition as compared to both its parents. Results recommend the introduction of the cv. Ervi in Lombardia for the production of high quality red wines
