Bootstrapping chiral CFTs at genus two

    No full text
Genus two partition functions of 2d chiral conformal field theories are given by Siegel modular forms. We compute their conformal blocks and use them to perform the conformal bootstrap. The advantage of this approach is that it imposes crossing symmetry of an infinite family of four point functions and also modular invariance at the same time. Since for a fixed central charge the ring of Siegel modular forms is finite dimensional, we can perform this analytically. In this way we derive bounds on three point functions and on the spectrum of such theories

What do African Citizens of Different Income Levels think of Chinese Investment? 2015-2019 A study of three countries in Africa

    No full text
This study focused on determining the relationship between occupation, education and perception on Chinese investment in Kenya, Senegal and Nigeria. It used a combination of qualitative and quantitative research to determine conclusions. The qualitative research focused on interviews and personal one on one interactions with Africans. The author used publicly available Afrobarometer data for the quantitative study. The results of the study indicate that there is a correlation between occupation and perception on Chinese influence for all three countries. However, there was no conclusive evidence that there was correlation between education and perception of Chinese influence. Readers for this text are: Dr. Lewis, Dr. Cheon and Mr. Gregoire

“Insights in Contemporary Franco-America in Rhea Côté-Robins and Gregoire Chabot: Reevaluating Memory, Identity and Place"

International audienceDr. Peggy Pacini’s paper “Insights into Contemporary Franco-America in Rhéa Côté-Robbins and Gregoire Chabot: Reevaluating Memory, Identity and Place” extends the discussion of Franco-American identity-formation and the role of a specific place (Maine) in this act by examining the paratexts of two contemporary Franco-American writers from Maine, Rhea Côté-Robbins and Gregoire Chabot. Pacini explores how each author has tried to create “a newer and more appropriate” identity, neither Franco nor American, but Franco-American from Maine. While it may be true that Côté-Robbins and Chabot have, through their writing, found their unique voices and a way to tell their unique stories, their works always start from memory, collective and personal, deeply rooted in place and time either to achieve piecing together a fragmented identity for the former, or interrogating it for the latter

Sacrifice in the Eucharist in the texts of the fathers from the New Testament to the council of Chalcedon

    No full text
This thesis examines the evidence for the notion of Eucharistic Sacrifice which is found in the original texts of all the principal Fathers and ecclesiastical authors of the Early Church. The period covered is from the time of the writing of the New Testament to the Council of Chalcedon in 451 A.D. Each of the principal Fathers is examined in historical order, as far as this is possible, except when there is another link between them such as their city of origin. Apart from a few exceptions, the texts are presented in their Greek or Latin original in the footnotes, but an English translation is supplied for every case in the main text of the thesis. The aim of the thesis is not to provide an exhaustive analysis of the above data, but to present them in an orderly way and to make initial exploratory comments on the texts themselves and of the work of various scholars. The final conclusion resulting from this exercise is that, although there is indisputable evidence that the notion of Eucharistic sacrifice was widely upheld by Patristic authors, its actual content varied from author to author and presents a richness which it is not easy to classify

Motivations to refuse or participate in self-reported delinquency surveys: A qualitative study among Belgian juveniles in custody

    No full text
peer reviewedSeveral factors were investigated that relate to motivation about participation in self-reported delinquency (SRD) questionnaires among a specific and relevant population: youths in custody. Three research questions were identified: 1. Explore the major reasons why a youth does or does not agree to participate in an SRD questionnaire; 2. Examine the mode of questionnaire administration (Web or paper–pencil); 3. Examine the role of pre- and postpaid incentives. These questions were also investigated with regard to gender. The study included a sample of 30 youths from two Belgian custodial facilities (boys = 20, girls = 10; age 12–17 years) who initially agreed to or refused to participate in an SRD questionnaire. A focus group method was used to collect data across 3 steps, according to the research questions. Results identified 4 interrelated types of motives shared among boys and girls as they agreed to or refused to participate in the SRD questionnaire. The Web version of the questionnaire was slightly more preferred by all the sample, and the incentive was clearly perceived as useless or even harmful with respect to their motivation to participate. This article discusses implications for further research with juveniles in custody and the need to focus careful attention on how information about an SRD questionnaire is presented. An appendix with principal tips from this study is included with this article

Null energy constraints on two-dimensional RG flows

    No full text
Abstract We study applications of spectral positivity and the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) to renormalization group (RG) flows in two-dimensional quantum field theory. We find a succinct new proof of the Zamolodchikov c-theorem, and derive further independent constraints along the flow. In particular, we identify a natural C-function that is a completely monotonic function of scale, meaning its derivatives satisfy the alternating inequalities (–1) n C (n)(μ 2) ≥ 0. The completely monotonic C-function is identical to the Zamolodchikov C-function at the endpoints, but differs along the RG flow. In addition, we apply Lorentzian techniques that we developed recently to study anomalies and RG flows in four dimensions, and show that the Zamolodchikov c-theorem can be restated as a Lorentzian sum rule relating the change in the central charge to the average null energy. This establishes that the ANEC implies the c-theorem in two dimensions, and provides a second, simpler example of the Lorentzian sum rule

The transmission of classical and patristic texts in late Anglo-Saxon and early Norman England

    No full text
This thesis consists of a general introduction to the historical and palaeographical background to the subject of the transmission of Classical and Patristic texts in late Anglo-Saxon and early Norman England, followed by five chapters each dealing with a classical or patristic author. Each chapter lists the information we have available on manuscripts containing the author's work, and conclusions are drawn as to the transmission of that work. In the case of five texts, Persius, Satirae; Augustine, Enchiridion; Gregory, Cura pastoralis and Moralia and Isidore, Synonymar portions of each MS are taken and compared in detail with each other and with the modern printed edition, and a stemma is constructed on the basis of evidence thus obtained. A conclusion draws together the information on the transmission of such manuscripts throughout the eighth to twelfth centuries. There are two appendices: the first contains brief notes on texts by Classical and Patristic authors of which there are not enough copies to form stemmata, while the second takes the form of a short analysis of the use of the letter k in the margins of some insular MSS studied. There are also indices nominum et manuscriptorum. The work is divided into two volumes after Chapter Three

Une conduite révolutionnaire, ou Action et Réflexion chez Henri Grégoire de 1789 à 1831

Thèse de doctorat d'état, déposée par Harold (son fils) en mémoire de son père décédé en 1993.This document proposes a bearing examination on printed works of the GREGOIRE abbot, as well as on his news, and it shows also a good knowledge of the abundant literature devoted to the constitutional bishop of Blois. The plan of the thesis treats political activities, religious and philanthropic of GREGOIRE of 1775 to 1831. In political matters, the author shows the undeniable influence exerted as well by Montesquieu as by Rousseau on the priest of Emberménil, but also the will of GREGOIRE to make pass in the institutions and the facts the ideas of the philosophers; testifying thus that it belongs to the generation known as of the “second lights”. Its oratorical talent as its personal courage made it possible GREGOI RE to play a considerable part in the revolutionary assemblies, although it did not have the political scale of a SIEYES or a MIRABEAU. On the ecclesiastical level, GREGOIRE, whose solid sacerdotal vocation will cross intact the revolutionary upheaval and whose dignity of life will be recognized by all - is a convinced Galician which accepts without difficulties the civil Constitution of the clergy and which believes sincerely in the future of the constitutional Church. It is one of the pillars of this one and will adopt at the time of the serious difficulties which will attack it an attitude of most courageous. Partisan initially of a Church of State, GREGOIRE, of which the ecclesiastical thought is not free from some undulations, is a solved and irreducible adversary of the Legal settlement for nobler reasons besides than TAYLLERAND and FOUCHE. GREGOIRE, names political, man of the church, historian to the untiring feather, is finally, and I will say perhaps especially, a convinced philanthropist who will devote himself inlassablement in favour of certain individuals that it regards as excluded from the company of his time: Jews and coloured men.

Three Essays on Taxes and Canadian Families

    No full text
This thesis includes three independent chapters on the interactions between families and the Canadian tax system. All three chapters make use of administrative longitudinal tax data. The first of these chapters measures the impact of an important reform to federal child benefits in terms of propensity to be partnered among parents. The Canada Child Benefit (CCB), introduced in 2016, is reduced according to the combined income of any partnered adults with whom the child lives. This family means-testing schedule combined with the increased generosity of the CCB could alter incentives for partnering versus singledom. We observe that the share of partnered mothers among recipients of the CCB is 1.2 percentage points lower than it would otherwise have been and that the comparable share among men is 0.3 lower. The second chapter measures the responsiveness of parents to the different taxes they face, with a particular focus on implicit joint taxation from family means-testing. I use variation in such means-testing as well as income tax rates over time and between provinces to estimate a set of elasticity parameters, proportional response rates to changes in effective taxation. I observe that parents are very unresponsive to changes in the income tax rate that they face. They are more sensitive to implicit tax rates imposed by means-testing, but these effects go in the opposite direction theory predicts. My last chapter documents how many families have simple tax returns that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) could readily complete with information it already collects from third parties. If so directed, it could complete returns for two-thirds of the families with income from provincial social assistance programs. Because tax-filing is a prerequisite to access to public benefits, I believe that doing so would meaningfully contribute to alleviating poverty. I also describe ways for the CRA to collect third-party information from new sources or institute alternative administrative procedures which could substantially increase the number of simple returns
