Unifying Frameworks for Library and Information Science: An Analysis of Three Perspectives

    No full text
This article argues that there are emerging new roles for academic librarians and that a more focused discussion on the theoretical foundations of Library and Information Science (LIS) will provide guidance for both the discipline and the profession. The analysis herein examines a possible theoretical foundation or framework for LIS from three perspectives: the philosophy of information, social epistemology, and cybersemiotics. The primary advocates of these three perspectives are L. Floridi, J. Shera, and S. Brier respectively. This analysis addresses three questions: how does each perspective view LIS?, can the perspectives clarify the relationship between librarianship and information science, and can one of these perspectives suggest how the profession of academic librarianship should transform itself to meet the demands of the scholar in the 21st century? The analysis will proceed along four dimensions: a) knowledge and information, b) the focus on society and the individual, c) the meaning and structure of information, and d) how a unifying framework of LIS might deal with the practice of librarianship.Paper submitted for the course Communication, Information, and Media Processes (Professors Mokros, Kantor, and Pavlik), December 13, 2007

Partisan Bias Scores for Web Domains

Partisan Audience Bias Scores These scores were derived from the sharing patterns of web domains by ~500K known Democrats and Republicans on Twitter. The scores scale from -1 (shared only by Democrats) to 1 (shared only by Republicans), and we excluded domains shared by less than 50 unique accounts. For more details on the scores, you can download the full paper here. We provide our scores below for research purposes only. All scores have been rounded to four digits past the decimal, and to prevent the potential for reidentification, we do not provide the number of tweets or unique accounts that shared a domain, only the domain and the rounded score. In addition, we also provide the partisan bias scores from several other projects that we used to validate our scores. If you use our scores, please cite our work: Robertson, R. Strategic Planning For Public Relations -4/E.

    No full text
This innovative and popular text provides a clear pathway to developing public relations campaigns and other types of strategic communication. Implementing the pragmatic, in-depth approach of the previous editions, author Ronald D. Smith presents a step-by-step unfolding of the strategic campaign process used in public relations practice. Drawing from his experience in professional practice and in the classroom, Smith walks readers through the critical steps for the formative research, strategic and tactical planning, and plan evaluation phases of the process

Transactions Cost Theory influence in strategy research: A review through a bibliometric study in leading journals

    No full text
Transaction cost theory (TCT) is widely used in several management disciplines. Its value for explaining organizational phenomena and managers? decisions is well accepted and has been recognized with two Nobel laureates (Ronald Coase and Oliver Williamson). In this paper we examine the impact of the TCT on extant research in top tier management journals. We conduct a bibliometric study supported in the analysis of citations and co-citations to uncover the connections between authors and presumably theories. We conclude that the TCT, albeit its specific focus on the transactions as the unit of analysis, is present in a majority of management- and business-related research.transaction costs theory, bibliometric study, strategy research, review

A Tree-Based Algorithm for Determining the Effects of Solvation on the Structure of Salivary Gland Tripeptide NH3+-D-PHE-D-GLU-GLY-COO−

    No full text
AbstractA D-enantiomeric analog of the submandibular gland rat-1 tripeptide FEG (Seq: NH3+-Phe-Glu-Gly-COO−) called feG (Seq: NH3+-D-Phe-D-Glu-Gly-COO−) was examined by molecular dynamics simulations in water. Previous in vacuo simulations suggested a conformation consisting predominantly of interactions between the Phe side chain and glutamyl-carboxyl group and a carboxyl/amino termini interaction. The solvated peptide was simulated using two approaches which were compared—a single 400-ns simulation and a “simulation tree.” The “tree” approach utilized 45 10-ns simulations with different conformations used as initial structures for given trajectories. We demonstrate that multiple short duration simulations are able to describe the same conformational space as that described by longer simulations. Furthermore, previously described in vacuo interactions were confirmed with amendments: the previously described head-to-tail arrangement of the amino and carboxyl termini, was not observed; the interaction between the glutamyl carboxyl and Phe side chain describes only one of a continuum of conformations present wherein the aromatic residue remains in close proximity to the glutamyl carbonyl group, and also interacts with either of the two available carboxyl groups. Finally, utilizing only two separate 10-ns trajectories, we were able to better describe the conformational space than a single 60-ns trajectory, realizing a threefold decrease in the computational complexity of the problem
