Literature and the Nugget of Knowledge. An Interview with Derek Attridge and Peter Lamarque
The idea of an interview with Peter Lamarque and Derek Attridge on the cognitive value of literary fiction arose in the wake of an aesthetics course on the relation between literature and truth at the University of Antwerp. In Spring 2015 Peter Lamarque contributed to this course with the lecture “The Opacity of Narrative and Fine-grained Reading”. In Spring 2017 Derek Attridge elaborated his view on the relation between literature and truth in his lecture “The Event of Truth : Literature’s Singular Relation to Knowledge”. After each lecture, we had the occasion to discuss with the author the stakes of the debate and we were rapidly convinced by the many points of convergences between their views. We intended to explore these similarities and differences through a face to face interaction and were happy that both philosophers accepted our invitation for an interview. This interview was conducted by Arthur Cools and Leen Verheyen in York on 9 July 2018

Ercilia, the Greek name of the poetess Antonia Díaz in the verses of Lamarque de Novoa
The author of this article discovers that the poet Antonia Díaz, the youthful friend and later most loving wife of the poet Lamarque de Novoa appears in his verses under the Greek pseudonym of Ercilia in several poems collected as an anthology in his Poesías Líricas (Lyrical Poems) of 1895. In them we can observe the evolution of a sublime idealized love that ascends from friendship to her painful death in a romantic modernist setting: the palace of the Alquería del Pilar, built for the enjoyment of her beloved in Dos Hermanas
The making of a waterfront suburb: an ethnography of coastal gentrification in New Jersey
This dissertation is an ethnographic account of place-making in contemporary America. Here I examine and explicate the process of coastal gentrification underway in a New Jersey community and the form that is emerging from it, what I [call] a waterfront suburb. The construction of this kind of place combines elements of gentrification and suburbanization. I examine the place-making of Highlands, New Jersey, through the narratives that people created around their own experiences and how they imagined others, and through the values and social relations that emerged from and also shaped the borough's physical environment, economics, and histories. Class was a critical indicator of how informants related to the process, as was informants' tenure and geographic location in the borough. Also contributing to the construction of place were the event of a sewage spill that closed nearby commercial clam beds, the borough's recently revised Master Plan, and the everyday events that contributed to a process of coastal gentrification such as experiences with New York City commuter ferry traffic, local businesses and neighborly interactions.
In this research, I further suburbanization and gentrification studies by examining in one geographic locale the overlap and contrasts between those two processes. This advances a recent call to critique the dichotomization of city and suburb. I suggest that the construction of Highlands as a place of leisure and good views, a vacation spot for year-round living by the privileged classes, is a distinguishing feature of the waterfront suburb. While this aspect of the process underway in Highlands could also occur in any number of places inland, the process of coastal gentrification is further distinguished by the marine locale at which it occurs. This is because property rights regarding common pool resources may be more salient here than in inland areas. By examining how participants in the place-making of Highlands engage the coastal and marine environments in their actions and their rhetoric, this work expands the relatively young body of literature on coastal gentrification and proposes a new analytical lens, the waterfront suburb, through which to view the process.Ph. Deregulation of the AR non genomic signaling pathways in an in vitro SBMA model
Les résultats obtenus mettent en évidence une dérégulation des voies de signalisation PI3K/Akt et JNK/c-jun induite par l'expression du RA muté dans notre modèle SBMA.Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy (SBMA) is a progressive inherited motoneuron disease caused by the expansion of a trinucleotide (CAG) repeat in the gene coding for the androgen receptor (AR) located on the X chromosome. This rare disease causes muscle weaknesses, hypotonia, hyporeflexia, fasciculations of facial muscles in male patients. The androgen-dependent formation of cytoplasmic aggregates and nuclear inclusions are pathological hallmarks of this polyglutamine disease but their potential neurotoxicity is still under debate. We developed a SBMA model based on a doxycycline-inducible AR51Q expression system in the NSC34 hybrid cell line. We have shown that the expression of the mutated AR leads to a reduced viability and to an alteration of neurite outgrowth compared to cells expressing the normal AR20Q. The AR belongs to the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. However, recent data have put in evidence a membrane localization of AR initiating non-genomic signaling pathways. Because we have not observed insoluble aggregates, reduced viability and neurite outgrowth could not be correlated to AR aggregation. We hypothesized that motoneuron death is not only due to aggregate formation but also to the alteration of AR signaling pathways. We focused on a correlation between the AR localization in lipid rafts and the observed phenotypes. Our results highlight the deregulation of PI3K/Akt and JNK/c-jun signaling pathways induced by the expression of AR51Q in our SBMA model

The Theory of Novelistic Truth
Abstract
Since the very beginning of the novel, novelists have been concerned that their stories should be read with the same seriousness as history because their novels were as instructive as history. The view that the novel is true, true in its particulars, is not exclusive to authors. Readers have always had a tendency to identify events, situations, characters, and relationships from novels with events, situations, characters, and relationships in reality which the author can be taken as describing. This chapter considers the view that the novel is true in its particulars, true of certain types of situation, person, etc. in the real world, and that this is what gives it a humanly interesting content.</jats:p
