Ultrasonic time-of-flight shift measurements in carbon composite laminates containing matrix microcracks
Time-of-flight (TOF) shifts are calculated from the fundamental A0 Lamb mode using air-coupled ultrasound. The technique is applied to carbon/bismaleimide samples containing varying microcrack density along the length of the sample. The phase and group velocity reduction is inferred from the TOF shift data. The relation between group velocity and crack density is presented. Approximate microcrack densities over several segments of the sample are calculated using a simple constant thresholding algorithm applied to X-ray MicroCT data. This proceeding may be downloaded for personal use only. Postmenopausal hyperandrogenism of ovarian origin: A clinicopathologic study of five cases
In postmenopausal women presenting with virilization and elevated testosterone levels, laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy should be considered after exclusion of adrenal causes. A clinicopathological study was conducted among those women who presented with features of hyperandrogenism in our postmenopausal clinic over a period of 2 years. Relevant past medical and surgical histories were elicited. Basic hormonal evaluation and radiological imaging were done. Laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was done. Six weeks postoperatively, serum testosterone was undetectable with significant clinical improvement. There was no recurrence of symptoms during the follow-up period of 2 years. Treatment of postmenopausal women with hyperandrogenism and virilization with laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is effective if she has no pronounced ovarian enlargement or adrenal tumor on imaging. An extensive endocrine testing and a detailed search for metastatic disease may be unnecessary
Flat-band localization and self-collimation of light in photonic crystals
We investigate the optical properties of a photonic crystal (PC) composed of a quasi-one-dimensional flat-band lattice array through finite-difference time-domain simulations. The photonic bands contain flat bands (FBs) at specific frequencies, which correspond to compact localized states as a consequence of destructive interference. The FBs are shown to be nondispersive along the Г → X line, prohibiting optical transmission with incident light in x direction. On the other hand, the photonic band for the FB frequency is found to be dispersive along the Г → Y line, resulting in nonzero optical transmission. Such anisotropic optical response of the PC due to the FB localization of light in a single direction only results in a self-collimation of light propagation throughout the PC at the FB frequency. © 2019, The Author(s
Closed-Loop Active Model Diagnosis Using Bhattacharyya Coefficient: Application to Automated Visual Inspection
This manuscript presents an improvement of state-of-the-art Closed-Loop Active Model Diagnosis (CLAMD). The proposed method utilizes weighted Bhattacharyya coefficients evaluated at the vertices of the polytopic constraint set to provide a good trade-off between computational efficiency and satisfactory input choice for separation of candidate models of a system. A simulation of a dynamical system shows the closed-loop performance not being susceptible to the combination of candidate models. Additionally, the broad applicability of CLAMD is shown by means of a demonstrative application in automated visual inspection. This application involves sequential determination of the optimal object inspection region for the next measurement. As compared to the conventional approach using one full image to recognize handwritten digits from the MNIST dataset, the novel CLAMD-approach needs significantly (up to 78%) less data to achieve similar accuracy.Accepted Author ManuscriptTeam Michel Verhaege
