No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2014PurposeThe aim of this study was to assess patients' perceptions of benefits and risks concerning complete denture therapy. A secondary objective was to assess the influence of clinical and sociodemographic variables on patients' perceptions. Materials and MethodsThe sample was composed of 104 volunteers who presented themselves for complete denture treatment at a dental school. The average age of the volunteers was 69.2 years () 9.3. Patient opinions concerning the benefits of complete denture therapy were recorded using a previously reported questionnaire. The answers were evaluated in three domains: (1) benefits (positive perceptions); (2) risks (negative perceptions); and (3) consequences of no treatment. ResultsThe average time of use of the previous dentures was 20 years (SD +/- 12.9). Risk factors (negative perceptions) received lower scores by the patients, while the consequences of no treatment received higher scores. No association was found among evaluations of the previous dentures and educational level, marital status, and gender; however, patients' evaluation about their previous dentures was significantly different depending on age (p= 0.001) and previous dentures' time of use (p= 0.038). ConclusionsPatients presented a positive perception of complete denture therapy, and the risk factors (negative perceptions) received the lowest scores. Patient perception regarding complete denture therapy was not influenced by educational level, evaluation of the previous dentures, or marital status.[Miranda, Barbara Barberio] Universidade de Taubaté (Unitau), Sch Dent[Fernandes dos Santos, Mateus Bertolini] Univ Estadual Campinas, Piracicaba Dent Sch, Sao Paulo, Brazil[Marchini, Leonardo] Univ Iowa, Coll Dent, Dept Prevent & Community Dent, Iowa City, IA 52242 US

This study aimed to evaluate expectations before and satisfaction after therapy with complete dentures. As a secondary objective, other variables that may interfere with patient satisfaction were also evaluated. Material and MethodsA representative sample of 99 patients assigned visual analog scale (VAS) scores to their expectations before and satisfaction after therapy regarding chewing, esthetics, comfort, and phonetics. Demographic data and answers to a questionnaire concerning the dentists' conduct were recorded. Multiple linear regression was used to evaluate the association among studied variables and patients' expectation and satisfaction with their dentures. ResultsThe average VAS scores were high for both expectations and satisfaction, and satisfaction exceeded expectations. Patients' expectations about esthetics and comfort were associated with age and self-reported time of using complete dentures. Patient satisfaction regarding chewing was associated with the number of postdelivery adjustments. Also, patient satisfaction regarding esthetics was associated with gender and esthetic expectations. In regard to phonetic satisfaction, associations were verified among self-reported time of using complete dentures, comfort and phonetics expectations, and dentists' explanations. Comfort satisfaction was associated only with educational level. ConclusionsPatient satisfaction regarding complete dentures exceeded expectations and an expressive majority of positive evaluations of the dentists was noticed. Many patient-related variables seemed to influence their evaluations of their dentures.[Oliveira Santos, Beatriz Ferreira; Fernandes Santos, Jarbas Francisco] Universidade de Taubaté (Unitau), Dept Dent[Fernandes dos Santos, Mateus Bertolini] Univ Fed Pelotas, Sch Dent, Rua Goncalves Chaves 457-502, BR-96015560 Pelotas, RS, Brazil[Fernandes Santos, Jarbas Francisco] Univ Vale do Paraiba, Sao Jose Dos Campos, Brazil[Marchini, Leonardo] Univ Iowa, Coll Dent, Dept Prevent & Community Dent, Iowa City, IA 52242 US

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2015Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Universidade de Taubaté (Unitau)Aims: Sleep bruxism (SB) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are often observed in children and may have several health implications. The aim of this paper is to evaluate their prevalence and to test for possible associations between these two conditions. Methodology: The sample consisted of 496 children randomly selected among the preschoolers of Taubate, Brazil; 249 (50.2%) were boys and 247 (49.8%) were girls. Diagnoses of SB and OSAS were made by clinical examinations and questionnaires filled out by the children's parents in a cross-sectional design. Analysis of variance and Chi-square tests were applied to verify possible association among the variables in question. Results: The average age was 4.49 years (SD: +/- 1.04 years). A total of 25.6% were diagnosed with SB, while 4.83% were diagnosed with OSAS, and only 2.82% presented both conditions. A statistical association was found between SB and OSAS (P < 0.001; Chi-square test): 11.03% of subjects with SB also presented with OSAS, and 97.18% of subjects without SB did not present with OSAS. No association was found among children's gender and age and the presence of SB or OSAS. Conclusions: Within the limits of this study, SB was associated with OSAS.[Ribeiro Ferreira, Natalia Maria; Fernandes dos Santos, Jarbas Francisco] Universidade de Taubaté (Unitau), Sch Dent[Fernandes dos Santos, Mateus Bertolini] Univ Fed Pelotas, Sch Dent, Pelotas, Brazil[Marchini, Leonardo] Univ Iowa, Dept Prevent & Community Dent, Iowa City, IA 52242 US

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Purpose: Patient variables and expectations may influence patients' evaluations of treatment outcomes, which are essential to the success of therapy. The main objective of this study was to compare patients' expectations before and satisfaction after receiving implant-supported fixed partial dentures (FPDs) and single crowns. A secondary objective was to evaluate other variables that may affect patient satisfaction. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 52 volunteers (mean age: 51.2 +/- 10.6 years) who had received implant-supported FPDs (n = 25) and single crowns (n = 27). A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to assess their expectations before and satisfaction after therapy with regard to mastication, esthetics, comfort, and phonetics. Patients also completed a questionnaire concerning other variables involved in the treatment and their evaluation of their clinician's conduct. Results: Patient expectations before treatment were higher than satisfaction after treatment, but this difference was significant only for esthetics in patients who had received implant-supported FPDs. Negative correlations were found between satisfaction and age and between number of absent teeth and number of postdelivery adjustments, but only for implant-supported FPDs. A positive relationship was found for the majority of questions concerning patients' evaluations of clinician conduct and VAS scores. Conclusion: Patients' evaluation of clinician conduct appears to be an important factor that influences their expectations before and satisfaction after receiving implant-supported FPDs and single crowns.

Inherited bleeding disorders: an analysis of the scientific evidence and knowledge for the clinical application

This Ph.D. thesis aimed to analyze the scientific evidence considering patients with Inherited Bleeding Disorders and dental procedures. Inherited bleeding disorders (IBDs) are a heterogeneous group of genetic conditions in which missing or defective clotting factors prevent normal blood clotting from occurring, been Hemophilia A, Hemophilia B, and von Willebrand´s disease the most prevalent. However, the literature is still scarce about the oral health conditions, type of treatment, and particularities regarding these subjects and dentistry. This study presents case reports, one clinical study about the use of dental implants, two scoping reviews (endodontics and oral surgery), and a metaanalysis comparing the caries experience between IBDs and healthy subjects. Thus, the goal of this Ph.D. thesis was to generate evidence, contributing to the scientific field, aiming to reduce postoperative complications after dental procedures in patients with inherited bleeding disorders.

An unexpected encounter: educational science and psychoanalysis in the phenomenological pedagogy of Piero Bertolini

    No full text
The present paper offers a reflection on the interconnections between pedagogy and psychoanalysis as interpreted in the phenomenological pedagogy of Piero Bertolini. Interest in the topic is justified by the fact that throughout his work (especially in Bertolini, 1988; 2005) this author himself repeatedly argued for the existence of such links. In the current paper, I outline and analyse some key points of intersection between phenomenological pedagogy and the psychoanalytical perspective. Specifically, I examine the theoretical bases justifying a comparison of these two sciences, the core thematic affinities between them, and finally the implications for the practice of phenomenological pedagogy that arise from this interdisciplinary encounter

Alcohol and Medication Use Among Elderly Community-dwelling Brazilians

    No full text
SummaryBackgroundAlcohol consumption among the elderly remains understudied, but alcohol interaction with the great amount of medicines taken by this age group could be a serious health problem. The aim of this study was to evaluate alcohol consumption and medicines used by an elderly sample from Pindamonhangaba, Brazil.MethodsIn a cross-sectional study, a representative sample of 123 elderly individuals (61.0% women) was interviewed by using the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) to verify alcohol consumption. The medicines used by the sample were also surveyed.ResultsIt was noted that the vast majority of respondents was classified as “low-risk consumption” (99.2%), followed by “harmful consumption”(0.8%). Alcohol dependency was not found. The average number of medicines used was 2.5 (± 1.3) medications/day. Regarding the distribution of medicines used by the elderly in this sample, the most used was captopril (33.3%), followed by acetylsalicylic acid (AAS) and hydrochlorothiazide (17.1%), and metformin (10.6%). With regard to the pharmacological class of medications used, the most used were antihypertensives (50.4%), diuretics (20.3%), and antidiabetic agents (13.8%). Only 13% of used medicines were considered inappropriate to the elderly, by Beers-Fick criteria.ConclusionHarmful consumption of alcohol in the evaluated sample was very low. The average of used medicines (2.5 medicines/day) was similar to those obtained previously in elderly populations in the same region, with relatively low use of inappropriate drugs for the elderly

La prima tesi di laurea italiana in tema di sci e responsabilità civile = The first Italian dissertation on skiing and civil liability

In the academic year 1969-70 Gianfranco de Bertolini’s JD disseration on “La responsabilità civile nell’infortuio sciistico” [Civil Liability and Ski Accidents] was, for what it can be today ascertained looking into bibliographical resources and data bases, the first piece of scholarship dealing with the (then) timidly raising issue of the allocation of damages for accidents occurring on the Italian ski slopes. Almost 45 years later, this dissertation deserves to be republished in digital form and made available in open access on the WEB for at least two reasons. First, it has clearly an historical importance for those who study what today has become a field of anlysis routinely debated in court, giving rise to a boosting litigation. Secondly, the reader will find in this early piece of scholarship a sharp analysis on a host of legal arguments, central for the development of the law of civil liability on the ski slopes, which emerged in legal scholarship and in case law only in the 80’s, to confirm the accuracy and inventive of the (then) young author.
