Marija Jurić Zagorka is an author whose historical novels were mostly considered trivial works for uneducated masses. However, the attitude of literary critics towards her work started to change over the past few years. This paper is also a reflection of this change and it attempts to analyse her novel Tajna Krvavog mosta (Secret of the Bloody Bridge) from the perspective of Gothic literature. By placing Tajna Krvavog mosta in the context of Croatian and world Gothic literature and by analysing its title and topic, and Gothic (the female protagonist who is persecuted, male characters as heroes or demonic lovers, elements of supernatural, Gothic architecture) motives present in the narrative, we show that this novel by Zagorka belongs to the Gothic canon
