Twitter, being a mode of computer-mediated communication (CMC), has portrayed an interesting language use in the medium given that it has a 140 character limitation. In this study, the impact of this limitation on language use has been investigated with distinctive attention to its linguistic features as well as the shortening strategies employed by Malaysian Twitter users. Two frameworks were used to analyse the features and the strategies; (1) the linguistic features of short texts (Ling and Baron, 2007) and (2) shortening strategies (Dabrowska, 2011). The author presents the findings by means of qualitative and quantitative analysis that show the frequency of linguistic features categorized into three areas; (1) emoticons and lexical shortenings, (2) sentence punctuation and (3) length. Shortening strategies include occurrences of clipping and contractions, deletion of vowels, non-standard spelling, word-letter substitutions, deletion of apostrophe and also deletion of pronouns and auxiliaries. The perceptions given by the participants on the language use in Twitter specifically on the creativity and clarity of tweets within the limited space are also analysed. The results show that the frequencies calculated for the features and strategies were relatively small on the whole; however, they have revealed gender differences in the language use. Furthermore, the present study confirms that language is neither deteriorating nor are users less efficient to convey their message clearly and successfully. It is hoped that this study will provide a better understanding of the phenomenon of language use on Twitter by Malaysian users. Keywords: computer-mediated communication, Twitter, character limitation, linguistic features, shortening strategies, gender differences, perception

Dynamics and control of underactuated systems with applications in robotics / Ahmad Azlan Mat Isa … [et al.]

Underactuated systems are mechanical control systems with fewer controls than the number of configuration variables. Control of underactuated systems is currently an active field of research due to their broad applications in Robotics, Aerospace Vehicles, and Marine Vehicles. The goal to study is to develop a model and control methods for underactauted systems. Although an underactuated manipulator can be structurally identical to a fully actuated one, their dexterities differ because of the presence of unactuated joints. If all underactuated systems in a class can be transformed into a specific class of nonlinear systems, we refer to Artificial Neural Network (ANN) systems as the "normal form" of the corresponding class of underactuated systems. An adaptive learning algorithm using an artificial neural network ANN has been utilized to predict the passive joint position of underactuated robot manipulator. In this approach a network has been trained to learn a desired set of joint angular positions from a given set of input torque and velocity over a certain period of time. Trying to overcome disadvantages of many used techniques in the literature, the ANNs have a significant advantage of being model-free method. The robot can directly determine the position of its passive joint, and can, therefore, completely eliminate the need for any system modeling. Even though it is very difficult in practice, data used in this study were recorded experimentally from sensors fixed on robot's joints to overcome the effect of kinematics uncertainties presence in the real world such as ill-defined linkage parameters and backlashes in gear trains. An ANN modal was trained using the experimentally obtained data and then used to predict the path of the passive joint that is positioned by the dynamic coupling of the active joint. The generality and efficiency of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated through simulations of an under-actuated robot manipulator, finally the obtained results were verified experimentally

The development of printmaking started as a medium of communication, be it a religious propaganda or as a tool to achieve independence. Printmaking can be classified into several categories, such as relief printing, intaglio, planographic and now in the modern era, is a digital print. Malaysian printmaking has been developing since the Colonial Era (1930s) by Chuah Thien Teng and Abdullah Ariff. Woodcut and linocut are the techniques chosen by them. Later on, other artists explored the medium; they applied more techniques included the latest digital technology. The objectives of this study are to trace on the development of style in Malaysian printmaking, to identify the factors that influence the development of style in Malaysian printmaking and to document the historical development of Malaysian printmaking. This research will use qualitative methods with art historical approach based on the primary and secondary data. The data collected in the form of text from books, exhibition catalogues, and art auction catalogues. The works of printmaking are divided into two main categories, namely the Pre-Independence Era (1930-1957) and Post-Independence Era (1958-2000)

Household debt in Malaysia has always being the popular issue as it keep raising and will give impact towards the stability of economic growth. This study is conducted to determine the relationship between independent variables and dependent variables which independent variables consist of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Housing Price Index (HPI), Interest Rate (IR), Unemployment Rate (UR) and Inflation Rate (IFR). This study is using time series analysis which data collected from period of Quarter One 2000 until Quarter Four 2018 and covers for Malaysia only. The quarterly time series data were obtained from Thomson Reuters Data Stream, Bank Negara Malaysia and World Bank Data. In order to obtain the empirical result, Multiple Linear Regression model is applied to obtain the relationship between independent and dependent variables. By using Multiple Linear Regression model, the result concludes that Housing Price Index (HPI), Interest Rate (IR) and Unemployment Rate (UR) has statistically significant impact towards the level of household debt in Malaysia with positive correlation except for Interest Rate (IR) with negative relationship. However, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Inflation Rate (IFR) were found to have insignificant relationship between household debts with negative correlations. Based on the results obtained, recommendations are made for the significant of study to help them in improving the household debt level in the long run

Self-provision edge layer traffic management with Software Defined Networking (SDN) / Mohd Sani Mat Isa

Nowadays, network utilization management focusing more on centralize application or equipment such firewall and filtering tools to enable the implementation of appropriate traffic management. With such approach, bottleneck of resources happen where the application or appliances being used cannot cope with the session or traffic filtering handling demands. This is due the approach of handling the filtering management at a centralize location. As mention earlier, shaping of available bandwidth being deployed at that layer has constraint the related devices due to vast amount of connection and traffic needed to be scan and control. This research will try to develop a program for self-provision traffic fair usage handling using both SFlow and Openflow technologies. If it is successful, automatic edge layer management of traffic could be adopted in order to mitigate the needs to scan, control and filtering traffic at a single point of devices. SFlow protocol will be used as the source of details traffic information where by top source, top destination and the amount of traffic usage can be identified. From earlier identification, using openflow protocol, selfprovision program will be executed in schedule to push policies to targeted switch from the controller. The program will kept on running to collect the details traffic and enforcing policies based on current network utilization. The program is automatically executed and no administrator intervention needed in order to apply the fair usage of traffic in the organization

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is any enzymatic method of synthesizing or amplification of large quantities of a targeted region of DNA in vitro. When developing a protocol for PCR amplification of a new DNA target, it may be important to optimize the reagent concentrations, cycling temperatures and cycle numbers. Magnesium chloride (MgCb) had been shown to influence the primer annealing temperature, fidelity, specificity and yield of a PCR run. In this study, variable concentration of MgCla have been used to determine its effects on a PCR performance and yield. The template DNA, reaction buffer, dNTPs, primers and DNA polymerase were not changed throughout the study. The PCR amplicons were then electrophoresed, stained and then photographed using the UV light. Results showed that at 0.5 mM MgCb concentration, no DNA band was produced in the gel. However, with an increased or excess in MgCh concentration (3.0 mM to 6.0 mM) multiple bands of non-specific products were formed and band intensity decreased. The optimal MgCb concentration was found to be 1.5 mM. At this optimized PCR amplification, the DNA band appeared as a single, bright band. For this and other reasons, it is deem necessary to optimize specific PCR amplification with respect to this divalent cation
