On focal curves of null Cartan curves

    No full text
The focal curve, which is determined as the locus of centers of osculating pseudo-spheres of a null Cartan curve, is investigated in Minkowski (n+2)-space Mn+2. Moreover, a curve called acceleration focal curve of a null Cartan curve is introduced by using a new family of functions. No sponsorhttps://doi.org/10.3906/mat-1604-7

    Urban and Industrial Water Uses

    No full text
This chapter intends to reflect urban and industrial water use and management in Turkey, based on an overview of available data related to sectoral uses, constraints and a realization of set targets up to the present. Through Turkey's EU accession process, the harmonization of the existing regulatory system with that of the EU has influenced the development of the water supply and sanitation sector, and consequently, there has been a gradual improvement in service quality and protection of the environment. Therefore, this issue deserves an in-depth analysis with regard to the objectives to be met and the corresponding finances to be allocated by the Turkish government. In line with this, a sectoral assessment giving the crosscutting issues, followed by drinking water production and its use by households and the public sector, industries connected to the public water supply system and self-supplied industries, as well as pollution generated by municipal and industrial water consumption and disposal are summarized prior to this analysis. Water uses encompassing water supply and treatment, sewerage, wastewater treatment, and disposal will be given in the first section. A general description of the existing institutional structure related to water and sewerage administrations in Turkey will be presented in the second section, which intends to enable a better understanding of the prevailing municipal water management system that has been subject to various revisions in the past

Municipal water demand and efficiency analysis: Case studies in Turkey

    No full text
The growing demand for municipal water due to population increase and urbanization impels water managers to reconsider the existing traditional supply-sided management approach. Strengthening of water demand management (WDM) policies by improving water use efficiency has been adopted as a key target in arid regions, in particular. Indeed, increasing the added value per m3 of water used is gaining importance, since it is a more environmentally-friendly strategy with regard to water resource management than expanding water infrastructure assets. Monitoring the water use efficiency index is the commonly applied method for assessing the performance of municipal water management that depends on physical (real) losses and non-physical (apparent) losses constituting non-revenue water (NRW). In this paper, the results of the study conducted in three medium-size urban settlements, namely Ordu, Çarşamba and Ceyhan, are presented. Field surveys and evaluation of the data relating to municipal customer service have been carried out. In the light of the findings covering a four-year period between 2004–2007, the origin and reasons for NRW, and the means and tools for reducing it in order to improve water use efficiency are discussed.</jats:p

Solutions for certain classes of the Riccati differential equation

    No full text
    We derive some analytic closed-form solutions for a class of Riccati equations y'(x) - lambda(0)(x) y(x) +/- y(2)(x) = +/- s(0)(x) where lambda(0)( x), s(0)( x) are C-infinity- functions. We show that if delta(n) = lambda(n)s(n-1) - lambda(n-1)s(n) = 0, where lambda(n) = lambda(')(n-1) + s(n-1) + lambda(0)lambda(n-1) and s(n) = s(n-1)(')+ s(0)lambda(k-1) , n = 1, 2, ... , then the Riccati equation has a solution given by y( x) = -/+ s(n-1)(x)/ lambda(n-1)(x). Extension to the generalized Riccati equation y'(x) + P(x) y(x) + Q(x) y(2)(x) = R(x) is also investigated

The Last Public Space: Understanding the Tension Between Politics and Drama in Contemporary British Theatre

    No full text
In the following interview, which took place on 26 November 2022 in Norwich, Hakan Gültekin talks to playwright Steve Waters about his theatrical universe and the current state of British Theatre. In the interview, the place of hope and truth on earth suffering from climate crisis is discussed through Waters’ double bill play, the Contingency Plan alongside mentions of other major contemporary plays and playwrights. The impetus behind this argument is to place contemporary political playwriting in its historical context. Steve Waters’ understanding of theatre as the last public space in the contemporary arts is also discussed. Steve Waters is a playwright working for the stage, radio and screen. Waters is also the author of Secret Life of Plays (Nick Hern Books, 2010) and A Life in 16 Films: How Cinema Made a Playwright (Methuen/Bloomsbury, 2021). His more recent works include Limehouse (Nick Hern Books, 2017), Temple (Nick Hern Books, 2015), Ignorance/Jahiliyyah (Nick Hern Books, 2012). Hakan Gültekin is an assistant Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Artvin Coruh University in Turkey. He is the author of The Critique of Neoliberalism in David Hare’s Plays (Çizgi, 2021). He is currently a visiting postdoctoral scholar at the University of East Anglia in the UK

An assessment of whether global satellite technologies have contributed to global security: the use of vehicle tracking systems by the Turkish National Police in the fight against international organized crime as a case study

    No full text
IOC is also considered as one of the major threats to global security, "impeding the social, economic, political and cultural development of societies worldwide". IOC has manifested "itself in different activities, among others, drug trafficking, trafficking in human beings; trafficking in firearms; smuggling of migrants; money laundering; etc." and criminals have expanded these activities thanks to globalization. In the same vein, Naim sees illegal trafficking of drugs, arms, intellectual property, people, and money as the Five Wars of Globalization. Therefore, the fight against IOC is of high importance in terms of global security. The use of the new technologies in combating IOC has caused tangible changes in the operations of law enforcement agencies. In an effort to demonstrate this change, this study intends to answer the question of “What is the impact of the use of new technologies and especially the use of GPS based vehicle tracking systems by law enforcement agencies in the fight against international organized crime”? The study proposed to answer this question by conducting interviews with 63 police officers working in the Ankara, Istanbul and Van districts of the Turkish National Police in Turkey. The study emphasized the importance of the use of new policing technologies in LEAs’ fight against crime and found that LEAs have been benefiting from the use of CCTV systems, modernized patrol cars, computer forensics, lawful interception and observation systems in both detection and seizure of suspects or criminals. The study also found that GPS based vehicle tracking systems (VTS) have also contributed to global security by contributing LEAs’ fight against IOC. Findings of the study showed that the TNP officers benefited from the use of VTS devices in their national and international operations in the fight against IOC. Furthermore the study also analyzed whether there were any human rights violations arising from law enforcement officer's use of VTSs in their operations in the US and Europe. According to the court decisions provided in the study it was found that there was no human rights violations arising from law enforcement officer’s use of VTSs in their operations in the US and Europe.Ph. No full text
This article examines intellectual, conceptual, and social networks among academics, organizations, and countries, as well as quantifies the scientific production, assesses scientific quality and impacts in the field of radiation shielding. To this end, we use a bibliometric analysis to evaluate the radiation shielding publication record. The bibliographic search is carried out in the ISI Web of Science, and time span covers documents written from 2000 to 2020. Along with descriptive statistical tools, we utilize the R package Bibliometrix as a tool to perform bibliometric analysis in order to model networks among authors, articles, resources, references, keywords, institutions and countries. This investigation reveals substantial radiation shielding publishing trends, especially in terms of co-authorships, citations, institutional cooperation and author country of origin
