DFT study of anatase-derived TiO2 nanosheets/graphene hybrid materials
In this work, we focus on the impact that the interface structure formed by graphene and a bilayer of anatase (001)-oriented exerts on electronic and optical properties of the final nanocomposite. In order to perform such analysis, we have modeled, optimized, and investigated the electronic properties of several graphene–TiO2 hybrids by means of density functional theory based calculations. Our results suggest that the physisorbed system is less electronically coupled and does not enhance the photoresponsivity in the visible region. On the other hand, the chemical bond between graphene and TiO2 nanosheet, a Ti[BOND]O[BOND]C bridge, clearly makes the two components highly electronically coupled and the graphene oxide (GO)/TiO2 chemisorbed system is characterized by a higher photoresponsivity in the visible region. This result is ascribed to the raise of a new valence band maximum state that lies in the pristine bandgap of TiO2 nanosheet, consequence of the hybridization between GO and TiO2

Principal component analysis of odor coding at the level of third-order olfactory neurons in Drosophila
Olfactory information in Drosophila is conveyed by projection neurons from olfactory sensory neurons to Kenyon cells (KCs) in the mushroom body (MB). A subset of KCs responds to a given odor molecule, and the combination of these KCs represents a part of the neuronal olfactory code. KCs are also thought to function as coincidence detectors for memory formation, associating odor information with a coincident punishment or reward stimulus. Associative conditioning has been shown to modify KC output. This plasticity occurs in the vertical lobes of MBs containing /' branches of KCs, which is shown by measuring the average Ca2+ levels in the branch of each lobe. We devised a method to quantitatively describe the population activity patterns recorded from axons of >1000 KCs at the /' branches using two-photon Ca2+ imaging. Functional and Morphological Changes in a Rat Model of Knee Osteoarthritis
In the United States, the estimated lifetime risk of developing knee osteoarthritis is approximately 44%. Therefore, animal models are necessary to study the etiology of the disease as well as the efficacy of therapeutic treatments. In this study, a combination of anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) and partial medial meniscal transection (pMMT) was performed on rat knees to investigate changes in behavior, cartilage, and bone morphology due to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Hyaluronic acid (HA) intra- articular injection was administered to the knee one week after the surgeries. ACLT + pMMT surgery resulted in a temporary contralateral preference in static weight bearing, minor degeneration of the articular cartilage, and generally decreased bone quality. However, among the parameters analyzed, the most sensitive parameter for characterizing PTOA changes in the ACLT + pMMT model was trabecular thickness from μCT analyses. Treatment with HA was also found to attenuate the progression of PTOA changes in articular cartilage and bone morphology

Sclerosing lipogranuloma of the scrotum: a case report
We present a case of sclerosing lipogranuloma of the scrotum. A 42-year-old man who had complained of a painless intrascrotal mass of one week's duration visited our clinic. Physical examination revealed a symmetrical Y-shaped hard mass around the penile base in the scrotum. Laboratory examination showed no abnormal findings except for a 14.0% eosinophilia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a surface coil showed an atypical mass at the penile base. Percutaneous needle biopsy under ultrasound guidance was performed and histopathological findings revealed lipogranuloma accompanied by infiltrating multinuclear giant cells, eosinocytes and lymphocytes. The tumor gradually disappeared during a 4-week administration of antibiotics and antiphlogistics. We have also reviewed 95 cases of sclerosing lipogranuloma of the scrotum in the Japanese literature
