She is the author of the novel Dogeaters (Penguin), which was nominated for the National Book Award. Hagedorn wrote the screenplay for Fresh Kill, an independent first feature film directed and produced by Shu Lea Cheang and has collaborated on film projects, Color Schemes and Those Fluttering Objects of Desire. Her multimedia theater pieces include Teenytown, The Art of War: Nine situations, and Holy Food. Hagedorn is the recipient of a 1994 Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest Writers Award, and a 1995 NEA Creative Writing Fellowship. Sequential Derivatization of Polar Organic Compounds in Cloud Water Using O-(2,3,4,5,6-Pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine Hydrochloride, N, O-Bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide, and Gas-Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Analysis
No full textCloud water samples from Whiteface Mountain, NY were used to develop a combined sampling and gas chromatography-mass spectrometric (GCMS) protocol for evaluating the complex mixture of highly polar organic compounds (HPOC) present in this atmospheric medium. Specific HPOC of interest were mono- and di keto-acids which are thought to originate from photochemical reactions of volatile unsaturated hydrocarbons from biogenic and manmade emissions and be a major fraction of atmospheric carbon. To measure HPOC mixtures and the individual keto-acids in cloud water, samples first must be derivatized for clean elution and measurement, and second, have low overall background of the target species as validated by GCMS analysis of field and laboratory blanks. Here, we discuss a dual derivatization method with PFBHA and BSTFA which targets only organic compounds that contain functional groups reacting with both reagents. The method also reduced potential contamination by minimizing the amount of sample processing from the field through the GCMS analysis steps. Once derivatized only gas chromatographic separation and selected ion monitoring (SIM) are needed to identify and quantify the polar organic compounds of interest. Concentrations of the detected total keto-acids in individual cloud water samples ranged from 27.8 to 329.3 ng mL-1 (ppb). Method detection limits for the individual HPOC ranged from 0.17 to 4.99 ng mL-1 and the quantification limits for the compounds ranged from 0.57 to 16.64 ng mL-1. The keto-acids were compared to the total organic carbon (TOC) results for the cloud water samples with concentrations of 0.607 to 3.350 mg L-1 (ppm). GCMS analysis of all samples and blanks indicated good control of the entire collection and analysis steps. Selected ion monitoring by GCMS of target keto-acids was essential for screening the complex organic carbon mixtures present at low ppb levels in cloud water. Jessica Smith: Suffragette, Author, Activist, and True Believer
No full text[ABSTRACT ONLY; NO FULL TEXT] This paper explores the life and works of Jessica Smith, a prolific American Communist activist, writer, and editor from the early 1900s to 1983. An avid supporter of the Soviet Union and married to two notable American Communists (Harold Ware and John Abt), Smith wrote several accounts on life in pre- and post-World War II Soviet Russia (Women in Soviet Russia, Soviet Democracy and How it Works, People Come First). She also served as editor for two long lived pro-Soviet publications, Soviet Russia Today and The New World Review and was heavily involved in the American-Soviet Friendship Council. Smith is examined within the typological framework of American Communists provided by Dr. Aileen Kraditor in her text, "Jimmy Higgins" The Mental World of the American Rank and File Communist 1930-1958. Her writings are compared to thematically similar works from Larry Lesueur (Twelve Months that Changed the World). Despite her contributions, Smith is largely absent from the historical record. Thus, this paper considers the historiography of the subject, establishes a foundation of study, and addresses the question of Jessica Smith's motives: Was she a true believer in the cause of Socialism, or was she a propogandist of the Soviet Union? The current state of research indicates that though there was opportunity for Smith to be trained as a Soviet agent (having lived in the Soviet Union for over five years) her writings and actions do not support this claim. She was critical of Soviet leadership in high profile crises, such as the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. Despite, or perhaps because of her direct knowledge of the Soviet Union and her peoples, Smith remained a stalwart Communist, idealistic and committed to international peace unto her death. She therefore presents an important case study on American Communism, Feminism, and the Cold War.by Chief Sidna

active performance of producing music as therapy. This paper proposes an immersive
multi-sensory Exposure Therapy for people suffering from anxiety disorders, based on a rich, detailed surround-soundscape. This soundscape is composed to include the users’ own idiosyncratic anxiety triggers as a form of
habituation, and to provoke psychological catharsis, as a non-verbal, visceral and enveloping exposure. To accurately pinpoint the most effective sounds and to optimally compose the soundscape we will monitor the participants’ physiological responses such as electroencephalography, respiration, electromyography, and heart rate during exposure. We hypothesize that such physiologically optimized sensory landscapes will aid the development of future immersive therapies for various psychological conditions, Sound is a major trigger of anxiety, and auditory hypersensitivity is an extremely problematic symptom. Exposure to stress-inducing sounds can free anxiety sufferers from entrenched avoidance behaviors, teaching physiological coping strategies and encouraging resolution of the psychological issues agitated by the sound
