Human-nature relationships in the collections of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples: a botanical perspective

    No full text
The portrayal of plants depicted in works of art in antiquity can provide insights into human–nature relationships. We have identified the botanical species sculpted on marble and stone and depicted on wall paintings, vases, mosaics, and furnishings in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, which houses the greatest collection of Greco-Roman antiquities in the world. In detail, the main objectives of the present study were to analyse and discuss the symbolic role of some plants more strongly linked to a deity or involved in other aspects of Greco-Roman life and customs. The attention was particularly devoted to their symbolic role in mythology, their use in medical and ritual practices, their artistic meaning in domestic representations and their representation in Nilotic scenes. "Minima adnotanda" sui 'Motti' di Pietro Bembo

    No full text
The essay examines a less known work by Bembo, the 'Motti', composed during the stay of the author in Urbino, in both the aspects of the manuscript tradition and of the relations with other works of the author. It also discusses the relationship of the work with the humanistic recollections of proverbs, in particular those of Erasmus and Polidoro Vergilio, and examines the metric shape of the work, in rhymed couplets, similar to that characterizing the vernacular tradition of the proverbs

Persistence of folk dishes in the Coastal Cilento's Culinary Culture: an ethnogastronomic approach

    No full text
Abstract Local gastronomy could be considered a relevant part of the more general concept of Traditional Knowledge, that recently has attracted increasing attention by researchers, especially if associated with conservation and sustainable use of biological resources. The present research was conducted using a semi-structured interview, 62 informants (39 women, 23 men) whose average age was 55 years (range 27–86 years) were interviewed. 109 traditional dishes are documented as still being prepared by people living along the Cilento coastal areas, 57 of which were reported by at least 5 people interviewed. The study reveals that despite the influence of globalization and modernization, traditional foodways and culinary practices continue to play an important role in the daily lives of the people in this region. Specifically, the study highlights the persistence of certain dishes, which are deeply rooted in the local culinary traditions and are still prepared and consumed by the people in this region

    MOTTI-mallin ilmapiirikartoitus Mikkelin vankilan vartijoille

Kehittämistehtävän tarve nousi esille oman työni ja sosiaalialan YAMK tutkinnon opiskelujen kautta. Olen työskennellyt Helsingin vankilan esimiestehtävissä 2002 - 2006 ja Mikkelin vankilassa 2006 alkaen. Mikkelin vankila muutti uusiin toimitiloihin 21.3.2012. Tämä opinnäytetyö on ilmapiirikartoitus Mikkelin vankilan vartijoille. Opinnäytetyö on kvantitatiivinen tutkimus Mikkelin vankilan vartijoiden työilmapiiristä. Tutkimuksen toteuttamiseksi suoritin Motti-mallin mukaisen ilmapiirikartoituksen Mikkelin vankilan vartijoille joulukuussa 2012. A workplace environment survey of Mikkeli prison guards – an application of the Mottimodel This development project arose as a combination of the author’s work and social service studying at the YAMK-program at Laurea in Tikkurila, Finland. The author has worked at supervisor and managerial positions at the Helsinki prison during 2002-2006 and at the Mikkeli prison since 2006 (of which the latter moved to new premises at 21st March 2012). This thesis is a quantitative workplace environment survey for Mikkeli prison guards. An application of the Motti-model questionnaire survey was done among those 37 prison guards whom were logged on to the ‘Personec’- worktime management computer program at the Mikkeli penitentiary system during December 2012. The aim of the work environment survey was to find out more about the work environment at the Mikkeli state prison as guards perceive it and especially how guards perceive their superiors (namely the ‘rikosseuraamusesimies’ superior officers). The results of this survey can be utilized by the prison management when improving the work conditions and well-being at workplace, plus these results are also beneficial in improving day-to-day operative management and yearly development plan discussions. The theory part of thesis consists of the discussion regarding the concepts ‘work conditions’ and ‘well-being at work’, examination of the present state of the Finnish state penitentiary system and the Mikkeli prison, the process for a development of this system, and finally, a discussion about the methods suited for the work environment analysis in general and their results’ interpretation in practice. Well-being at work can be improved by utilizing more efficiently the existing structure and work system, but also by cutting down those aspects that are perceived as negative and counterproductive. This requires us not only to recognize the existing potential resources but also to spot accurately the need for development at some particular area. Specifically, the results of this thesis show that the main deficiencies in work well-being at Mikkeli state prison were the following. Firstly, the insufficient internal communication both between the guard supervisors and the guards plus the inadequate communication among guards themselves. Secondly, the guards viewed the lack of internal work training for developing the guards’ job-specific skills as another main obstacle for utilizing the existing resources more efficiently. The main positive result was that the guards perceived their supervisors as competent and valued highly their behavior at work. Finally, the relations towards the government and the outer world were also perceived as well-managed and competently handled
