    The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of modifying incisor position by changing the arch form, before that incisor torque is expressed through the information inside brackets. Thirty patients needing an arch form variation were treated. Patients were bonded with straight-wire prescription and the arch form was chosen on the models with the help of a template. The arch sequence was: twist 0175, 016 NT, 018 SS, 18Ã25 SS. Records were taken with intraoral photographs (front and lateral projections, overjet, lower and upper occlusal) repeated for every arch. Results show that archwires can be used to control antero-posterior position of incisor teeth: in fact archwires can "add" or "subtract" torque to an existing bracket prescription

    Evaluation of Masticatory Muscles in Adult Patients with Maxillary Hypoplasia Treated with Surgically Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion (SARME): A Retrospective Study

    Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate modifications in electromyographic activity of temporal and masseter muscles before and after surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) in adult subjects. Materials and Methods: Data from 20 patients with unilateral posterior crossbite were selected retrospectively from the Orthodontics Department of the University of Genoa and the Department of Biomedical Surgical and Dental Sciences of the University of Milan, Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda, Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico Milan. Inclusion criteria were set as skeletal class I; adult patients (age > 18); good general health; patients with a transverse maxillary deficiency with unilateral posterior crossbite and maxillary constriction ≥ 5 mm; Superficial electromyographic (EMG) examinations at T0 and T1. Exclusion criteria were smoking, metabolic bone diseases (e.g., hyperparathyroidism, vitamin C deficiency), chronic use of corticoids before or during treatment, parafunctional habits (e.g., bruxism), and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The Shapiro–Wilk test was performed to check whether the data were normally distributed. Differences for each variable before and after SARME were analyzed with a paired t-test (p < 0.05). Results: The statistical analysis demonstrated no statistically significant differences between the EMG values taken before and after SARME regarding the standardized electrical activity of the masticatory muscles (masseter and anterior temporalis (p > 0.05)). Conclusions: Considering the specific conditions of this study, it can be concluded that SARME did not alter the EMG activity of the masseter and temporal muscles. The present study has shown that the masticatory musculature evaluated after approximately 8 months of therapy can adapt well to SARME

    Relatisonship between molar deciduous teeth infraocclusion and mandibular growth: A case-control study

    Aim As the effects of infraocclusion on mandibular growth could have a significant impact on the treatment planning made by the orthodontist, the aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation between infraocclusion and mandibular growth. Materials and methods Study design: A total of 42 healthy Caucasian patients with no history of dental trauma or orthodontic treatment were selected for this study from the same paediatric dentistry department. These patients were divided in two groups based on the presence or absence of infraocclusion: Group A, 22 patients (12 males and 10 females) suffering from infraocclusion of at least one inferior deciduous molar, and Group B, 20 patients (9 males and 11 females) who did not suffer from infraocclusion but had to be treated for dental overcrowding. Each patient was examined through an orthopantomography scan and lateral cephalogram. All measurements were made before the start of the treatment, and they were analysed in order to show cephalometric correlation between the skeletal class, the vertical dimension and cranio-maxillo-mandibular divergence. Results According to Student's t-test, the only measurements which had a statistically significant difference between Group A and Group B were the SNB angle (p-value <0.01), the ANB angle (p-value <0.05) and the PC-GO-GN angle (p-value <0.05). Conclusion From the data collected in this study, it is possible to conclude that patients suffering from infraocclusion of the mandibular deciduous molars show mandibular post-rotation and an increased total Gonial angle, compared to patients who do not suffer from infraocclusion. Despite the absence of a longer-term evaluation of these patients, thanks to this data it is possible to state that early diagnosis of infraocclusion is fundamental in order to apply a well-planned and thought-out orthodontic treatment

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
