Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

On the present thesis investigated the exploitation of nanotechnology in the field of fiber polymer composite materials by the development of pre-organized structures of carbon nanomaterials and their integration into the structure of the FRPs in order to enhance their performance and multifunctionality. Primary, a literature survey performed in the field of multifunctional materials as also on the manufacturing processes of fiber composites and the incorporation methods of nanotechnology with FRPs. Finally, performance data of the most representative achievements in terms of material properties enhancement (structural, electrical, thermal etc.) and multifunctionality in the field of nano-enabled fiber composites collected and presented. The literature review concluded that currently, after more than a decade and numerous studies and promising scientific results to a variety of applications that climaxed the expectations and also the development of an industry that delivers nano–particles in raw form or in form of intermediate products; it is evident to the engineering community that the technology of nano-modification to deliver structural composites has reached a crucial milestone towards its short-term utilization. This milestone is linked to the need to transform from lab scale “preparation environment” to industrial scale “production environment”. A gap has been identified between available nano-integration routes and already established FRP processing and manufacturing technologies to reach a seamless integration of nanotechnologies in production units. Especially in aerospace industry, it is high demanding the nano–enabling product manufacturers to develop products in raw form or intermediate products that should meet the requirements of the fiber composites manufacturers and the high quality standards of the aerospace industry concepts that do not change the raw materials or do not drastically change the manufacturing processes are considered more easily adoptable by the industry as they do not change critical procedures applied.Scope of the present thesis is to evaluate and propose more efficient paths for the exploitation of the benefits that come from the utilization of nanotechnology products such carbon allotrope nanomaterials (CNTs and GNPs) and their incorporation with fiber composites for enhancement of their performance as also for their multifunctional performance. Main carrier on the proposed approach is the liquid nanoparticle dispersion that can directly be coated on the dry fiber surface or it can be preformed as a thin flim (<0.1 mm thickness) and then can be embedded in the interlaminar region of fiber composites during lamination process. As discussed before those approaches selected as they can be industrialized with already well-established methods. This approach first applied by the usage of CNT Buckypapers, buckypapers are 2D structures of CNTs that are produced through the microfiltration of low viscosity liquid dispersions of CNTs in solvent (aqueous or organic). The CNT buckypapers during the study of the present thesis were integrated into the structure of FRP composites and investigated their effect on the intrinsic properties of the produced materials as also their multifunctionality applications as self-sensing and self-heating material elements. The study continued with the formation of films through tape casting that is a well-established continuous technique. The produced nanocomposite films are consisted of nanomaterial carbon allotropes with low and medium particle content. The produced films initially tested for their intrinsic properties (physical, electrical, mechanical etc.) and then embedded to fiber composites and tested their performance. Also, the integration of the produced films in glass fiber composite (GFRP) structures was performed and their performance was tested in de-icing and electromagnetic shielding applications. Finally, for the case of high content films, as high nanoparticle coatings find high applicability in electrochemical energy applications as electrodes (batteries, supercapacitors etc.), initially their electrochemical performance tested as electrodes in supercapacitors. GNPs and hybrid formulations of GNPs and MnO2 with Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) as polymer binder tested for their electrochemical performance. Afterwards, the most effective material formulation selected and coated on carbon fabrics. The coated carbon fabrics (CF) used as electrodes and current collectors in a structure with lamination sequence coated CF/glass fiber/coated CF, the glass fibric served as separator in order to form a symmetrical supercapacitor structure. The polymer matrix of this structure was a polymer electrolyte synthesized with PVDF, ionic liquid BMIMBF4 and Succinonitrile as a plasticizing agent. Additionally, epoxy polymer added in the synthesis of the polymer electrolyte to enhance the structural properties of the device. The produced material tested in parallel for its electrochemical performance as also for its structural properties. The idea of developing materials that can store energy and in parallel operate as structural elements or could be integrated to structural elements can lead to lighter structures, where the space and weight are critical parameters. The combination of the achieved capacitance value in respect to the stiffness and strength of the materials are very promising results for further development of multifunctional structural energy storage materials and their applications in the industries of wearable electronics, automotive and aerospace.Αντικείμενο της διατριβής είναι η διερεύνηση, η αναλυτική μελέτη και η αποτίμηση της εφαρμογής νέων υλικών και μεθοδολογιών για την ανάπτυξη πολύ-λειτουργικών κατασκευών με τη χρήση νανουλικών, κυρίως Νανοσωλήνων Άνθρακα και Νανοπλακιδίων Γραφενίου.Αναλυτικότερα, προτείνεται η τροποποίηση ινωδών συνθέτων υλικών μέσω της προγενέστερης διαμόρφωσης των νανουλικών σε ενδιάμεση μορφή που θα καθιστά τη χρήση τους και την ενσωμάτωση τους στη δομή του συνθέτου λιγότερο πολύπλοκη.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

    No full text
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Author Under Sail The Imagination of Jack London, 1893-1902

    No full text
In Author Under Sail, Jay Williams offers the first complete literary biography of Jack London as a professional writer engaged in the labor of writing. It examines the authorial imagination in London's work, the use of imagination in both his fiction and nonfiction, and the ways he defined imagination in the creative process in his business dealings with his publishers, editors, and agents. In this first volume of a two-volume biography, Williams traverses the years 1893 to 1902, from London's "Story of a Typhoon" to The People of the Abyss. The Jack London who emerges in the pages of Author Under Sail is a writer whose partnership with publishers, most notably his productive alliance with George Brett of Macmillan, was one of the most formative in American literary history. London pioneered many author models during the heyday of realism and naturalism, blurring the boundaries of these popular genres by focusing on absorption and theatricality and the representation of the seen and unseen. London created an impassioned, sincere, and extremely personal realism unlike that of other American writers of the time. Author Under Sail is a literary tour de force that reveals the full range of London as writer, creative citizen, and entrepreneur at the same time it sheds light on the maverick side of machine-age literature.Intro -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Dedication -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1.
