Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

The Community Divide is more Detrimental than the Plant Itself: Confrontational Stigma and Community Responses to Rural Facility Siting
Get PDFRural communities are changing as ex-urban residents in-migrate with differing expectations than long-time residents of the surrounding agricultural community. The implications come into focus when techno-industrial developments are introduced in rural landscapes—potentially affecting residents’ place attachment. In the Township of Southgate, Ontario, a proposed biosolid (sewage sludge) processing facility resulted in hostile community conflict and emotional impacts that have driven a wedge between friends and family members. Utilizing in-depth interviews (n=22), this paper examines narratives of community in Southgate Township and the emotional impacts residents experienced during the facility siting process. The results suggest that divergent responses to facility development and landscape change has stimulated particularly strong intra-community conflict and emotions, altering the ways rural residents initially perceive their landscape and community as a safe tranquil place with a strong sense of community. Emerging from this analysis is the notion of confrontational stigma whereby residents worried the polarizing conflict that emerged in the community between those who oppose the facility versus those who support it for economic and agricultural purposes is leading to outsiders viewing their community negatively. Residents described how this depth of conflict could be more detrimental to the community than the effects of the facility itself. These findings suggest greater attention to community-level impacts of facility siting in rural areas in particular. This study makes recommendations for a facility siting process in rural communities that is more attentive to the diversity of rural residents, their range of place attachments and the potential for lasting social and emotional impacts within these diverse rural communities.

Les communautés rurales sont en plein changement alors que les anciens citadins qui s' y installent ont des attentes différentes de celles des résidents de la communauté agricole avoisinante. Les implications deviennent évidentes quand les développements techno-industriels sont introduits dans les paysages ruraux-potentiellement affectant l'attachement des résidents à l'endroit. Dans la municipalité de Southgate, en Ontario, une suggestion d'usine de traitement de biosolides (boues d'épuration) a entrainé des conflits hostiles dans la communauté et des impacts émotionnels qui ont crée un fossé entre amis et membres de la famille. En utilisant la méthode d'entrevues approfondies (n=22), cet article examine les récits de la communauté, dans la municipalité de Southgate, et les impacts émotionnels que les résidents ont subis durant le processus d'implantation de l'usine. Les résultats suggèrent que des réponses divergentes au développement de l'usine et le changement du paysage ont stimulé des conflits et émotions intra-communautaires particulièrement forts, altérant les façons dont les résidents ruraux perçoivent initialement leur paysage et leur communauté, c'est-à-dire comme un endroit tranquille et sécuritaire avec un fort sentiment communautaire. Les résidents ont décrit dans quelle mesure la profondeur les conflits pourrait être encore plus néfaste que l'usine elle-même. Ces résultats suggèrent de porter une plus grande attention aux impacts aux niveaux communautaires lors de l'implantation d'installations, en particulier en zones rurales.
