Quale capitalismo?
No full textThe article outlines the meaning of capitalism rejecting some current narratives with which it is conventionally associated. Questioning the traditional concept of morality the author shows how, following the tradition of classical liberalism, free market and competition could be seen as a proper framework for a “moral” political order based on tolerance and predictability of human actions. Recently, two important books, Luigi Zingales, Manifesto capitalista, and Alberto Mingardi, L’intelligenza del denaro, confront the problems of a proper definition of capitalism and its proper way of working. These two books, although different for several reasons, cast a new light on the role of politics in society and on the complex relationship between politics, ethics and economy. Looking at these works it is also possible to find a new way of thinking about how to modify existing institutions and social structures in order to expand the possibilities for economic and social flourishing

No full textWhat did classical liberal thinkers contribute to the theoretical underpinnings of the European unification project? This paper examines works by Luigi Einaudi, Friedrich A. von Hayek and Wilhelm Röpke, attempting to understand to what extent the nineteenth-century pacifist tradition of classical liberalism came back to life in works of these authors. Their views on the international order show a certain degree of homogeneity—but up to a point. While Einaudi and Hayek were distinctively more favourable to the European project, Röpke had a less favourable view of European unificaton, fearing it may result in increasing centralisation. They, nonetheless, shared some common elements in understanding international order that we trace back to nineteenth-century liberalism

No full textIn the literary production of Alberto Cantoni, short story writer and novelist between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the novel L'Illustrissimo is highly important both because it is the last publication of the author, from Pomponesco, a small town a few kilometers south of Mantua, both because it summarizes in a single text the different nuances and different directions that his writing has taken over the course of his literary career, also due to a writing and processing time that embraces the entire span of years of his career itself. In the foreground, in addition to the numerous and brilliant characters, one of the protagonists is the Mantuan landscape which, not a simple background, becomes a true literary parameter which in different and significant ways affects the purposes and mechanisms of the novel
Instilling virtue
No full textTwo debates in contemporary philosophical moral psychology have so far been conducted almost entirely in isolation from one another despite their structural similarity. One is the debate over the importance for virtue ethics of the results of situational manipulation experiments in social psychology. The other is the debate over the ethical implications of experiments that reveal gender and race biases in social cognition. In both cases, the ethical problem posed cannot be identified without first clarifying the cognitive structures underlying the problematic phenomena. In this chapter, I argue that the two kinds of phenomena share a basic cognitive structure, which is well articulated by the findings of the empirical psychology of attitudes, especially if these findings are understood in the context of the cognitive-affective system theory of personality. On the basis of this joint construal of situationism and implicit bias, I argue that the negative programme of ethical improvement that many philosophers recommend in response to one or other problem is unrealistic. Instead, we should consider more seriously the prospects of the positive programme of ethical improvement recommended by Aristotle, the direct aim of which is to instil deeply in ourselves the values at the heart of each of the virtues

He is a prolific and acclaimed writer who has used his dual-culture life border experiences to explore the complex and interconnected Mexican-US American reality. The critically acclaimed and best-selling Mexican-born author of 13 books, Urrea has won numerous awards for his poetry, fiction and essays.
