State of the Art on the European Court of Justice and Enacting Citizenship. CEPS Special Report, April 27 2009

    No full text
This report provides a state of the art of the main interdisciplinary academic discussions, EU acts and European Court of Justice (ECJ) case law surrounding issues related to citizenship, migration and integration. The report was finalised in mid-2008 and has provided the basis upon which the work conducted by the Justice and Home Affairs Section at CEPS in the framework of the ENACT research project funded by DG Research of the European Commission has been developed. In particular, the general objectives of CEPS’ contribution to this project are: first, to assess the impact of Community governance on the enactment of European citizenship and the exclusivity of the nation-state competence over nationality matters; and to examine the ways in which the ECJ and the adoption of the Council Directive 2004/38/EC on the rights of citizens of the Union and their family members to move and reside freely have influenced its enactment; second, to analyse the impacts of the enlargement processes, and of accompanying measures such as the transitional arrangements inserted in the Acts of Accession and other restrictions to the fundamental right of freedom of movement, on the status and practices of European citizenship; and third, to assess the tensions inherent to nationality and/or residence-based enactment of citizenship versus European citizenship of TCNs; to address the effects and dilemmas posed by the Council Directive 2003/109/EC of November 2003 on the status of third country nationals who are long-term residents

Inside–out: the role of anger experience and expression in the development of postpartum mood disorders

    No full text
PURPOSE: Among negative emotions, anger has not been studied in as much depth in her connection to postpartum mood disorders. The study aimed to investigate the role of anger as a potential vulnerability factor increasing the risk of Maternity Blues (MB) and Postpartum Depression (PPD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pregnant women in their third trimester of pregnancy underwent the following tests: the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory 2 - STAXI-2 (baseline visit), the Blues Questionnaire -BQ (3 and 5 days after delivery), and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale - Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) (3 and 6 months following delivery). RESULTS: One hundred ten subjects were included in this study. The prevalence rate of mothers with MB was about 35%, whereas about 4% of women developed a PPD. Significant positive correlations were found among State anger (SANG), Trait anger (TANG), anger expression out (AXO) and in (AXI) and postpartum depressive disorders, as measured by blues questionnaire (BQ) and EPDS. CONCLUSIONS: Anger experience and expression can be considered as vulnerability factors for postpartum mood disorders onset. Particularly, the expression of angry feelings toward other persons or objects in the environment (AXO) predicts the onset of MB, whereas holding in or suppressing angry feelings (AXI) could be a risk factor for subsequent PPD

Gabapentin enacarbil, a gabapentin prodrug for the treatment of the neurological symptoms associated with disorders such as restless legs syndrome

    No full text
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a sleep-related movement disorder characterized by an urge to move the legs accompanied by unpleasant symptoms. Dopaminergic agents currently represent the first-line therapy for RLS. However, some patients are unable to continue with this pharmacological approach in the long term because of augmentation or other adverse events. Limited studies with the anticonvulsant/analgesic agent gabapentin have demonstrated that this drug might be useful in the treatment of primary and uremic RLS. Unfortunately, gabapentin has an unfavorable pharmacokinetic profile characterized by a dose-dependent bioavailability. Gabapentin enacarbil, a prodrug of gabapentin, is currently being developed by XenoPort Inc/Astellas Pharma Inc/GlaxoSmithKline plc in order to overcome this limitation. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that gabapentin enacarbil provides a dose-proportional exposure to gabapentin when orally administered. Gabapentin enacarbil has proved to be beneficial in treating RLS symptoms in several phase II and III clinical trials. In addition, these trials have demonstrated that gabapentin enacarbil is safe and well tolerated, causing transient and mild or moderate adverse events. Gabapentin enacarbil is an interesting compound, which is potentially useful in treating RLS patients who report severe adverse events under dopaminergic agents. The author concludes that additional studies are required in order to better assess the efficacy and safety of gabapentin enacarbil on RLS

Fil: Merlino-Santesteban, Cristian. Vascular endothelial growth factor restores delayed tumor progression in tumors depleted of macrophages

    No full text
Genetic depletion of macrophages in Polyoma Middle T oncoprotein (PyMT)-induced mammary tumors in mice delayed the angiogenic switch and the progression to malignancy. To determine whether vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) produced by tumor-associated macrophages regulated the onset of the angiogenic switch, a genetic approach was used to restore expression of VEGF-A into tumors at the benign stages. This stimulated formation of a high-density vessel network and in macrophage-depleted mice, was followed by accelerated tumor progression. The expression of VEGF-A led to a massive infiltration into the tumor of leukocytes that were mostly macrophages. This study suggests that macrophage-produced VEGF regulates malignant progression through stimulating tumor angiogenesis, leukocytic infiltration and tumor cell invasion

Innovation process in Italian SMEs: the universities role

    No full text
Innovation process is a very critical one, both inside the big corporations and for the SMEs which in Italy are 7 million. In Bergamo area there is a SME every 7 inhabitants, particularly in textile, mechanical and electronic industries. SMEs in Italy constitute the 50 % of GDP and 70 % of occupation. Universities and CNR (National Research Center) have promoted in the past more than 30 technological parks; and about 300 public institutions should facilitate technology transfer to Italian SMEs, but the dialogue between research centers and enterprises remains very difficult, basically for cultural reasons. In Italy researchers and scientists publish papers for their international colleagues and major reviews, using scientific and technical language impossible to be understood by the entrepreneurs. In given article the features of Italian National Innovation System (INIS) are described, and the role of University of Bergamo in innovative process is shown. The author of the article considers that using of experience of Finland and Israel could be applied as two possible strategies for development of INIS and for implementation of innovation into SMEs. Obviously, collaboration of SMEs with universities in R&D gives possibilities of efficient knowledge transfer, resource exchange and organizational learning

Revise, resubmit and reveal? An autoethnographer’s story of facing the challenges of revealing the self through publication

    No full text
This article presents a story of writing, revising and publishing an autoethnography of sporting injury. Using extracts from peer review comments and personal reflections both on these reviews and on the process more broadly, I show that although autoethnography can be a very challenging, even troubling, experience for the author, it can also be rewarding and empowering when editors and reviewers offer supportive and constructive comments and suggestions. I argue that greater consideration needs to be given to the aftermath of publication of autoethnographic accounts and call for wider debate about the ethics of asking authors to reveal more about their personal lives and weaknesses in the pursuit of academic goals. The article offers would-be autoethnographers one account of the writing, revising and publishing process in order to explore a number of relevant issues that arise when an author chooses an autoethnographic approach for conducting and presenting research
